Anyone know how David Tibet and Nick Cave came to know each other? It would have been great if they had collaborated in more projects instead of just two songs.
wow! after hearing the real reason for the song.I kinda hate the song :( it hurts to her that a woman had to let her baby die while taking care of someone elses....
I appreciate C93 to a point, but I can't fathom why they have such a fawning, passionate audience. I'm glad they do, I just don't get what the hype is. David seems to approach each song with the exact same vocal delivery (not singing), and it usually sounds like he's REALLY over emphasizing things. The music is pretty repetitive and seems to vary only slightly in each song. I respectfully ask for someone to explain why they're so in to C93. Thanks.
I heard a version of this song once without nick cave and david tibet wasn't whispering, just singing regularly. Does anyone knows annything about it ?

@OliverDaves - I'm so glad to find another fan of this song! My college professor "assigned" it to me for my final exam - I wanted to do an aria from "La Traviata" or "Aida", but...well...the horses paid off in the end. It was the only "lullaby" that would put my nephew to sleep at 3am!

Current 93 I liked, I like from long time ago. But Nick Cave I tried but never told me nothing with his music. This song is ok. But Current 93 has hundreds ballads more nice than this.
I used to listen to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds so much, and for some reason I hadn't in a few years. Really feels good to hear his voice again on such a beautiful piece, I'm a fan of both Current 93 and Nick Cave so this is a wonderful combo for me.
The song was created by a black woman who had to look after her master's child, while her own child died from neglect. She would sing this to the masters white child. It is right that it has such a sad sound to it really. The little lamb crying for its mommy is obviously her own dead/dying child. The original had the lyric "birds and butterflies, peck at his eyes", but it had to be changed to the less violent version...for the kids and all.
Nick cave didnt change it, probably a different artist from an earlier time who did a cover of the song changed it, and thats the general accepted version now
@vegsdraugr if you are going to criticise an academic discipline with no evidence of your own and just a vague opinion, at least learn how to spell plagiarism
@eatcress not even dead or dying child, but even simply the one she's separated from, who's going to sleep alone while she sings to the master's child. heart-rending either way you choose to interpret it.
@eatcress Yeah, kill somebody else's kid and expect them to treat yours right. Slavery was a shit instutition and all, but do you really believe that reverse-propiganda line for a second?
That's exactly what song it is. I couldn't put my finger on it. I love the whole relics album. One of their most underrated albums. The Nile song is great too.
I agree, Cirrus Minor is also really cool. I wish Gilmour would have finished the last guitar part and cut out some synth, but it is an awesome song regardless. The first time I heard Julia Dream I was coming off a very strong acid trip. I immediately purchased the album. I have since quit the drug, but not the album.
So why don't do provide us the original video sung by David Tibet, so that we could make our own opinion? Anyway this song is magnificent, and there is is an anguish in Nick Cave's voice too...
this actually is the original song from the Current 93 album "All The Pretty Little Horses". The opening track is the same song with the words whispered by David Tibet, and Nick Cave sings the reprise at the end of the album.
Nick cave is my favorate singer/songwriter of the last 25 years. However, I really prefer David Tibet's voice for this song. Much creepier. If cave danger is psychotic, Tibet's is nuerotic, and this song suits that approach more I feel.
The mystery of the cover image?
The artists name maybe Giovanni Bragolin. Look up the myth of the Crying Boy.

If I listen to these lyrics it seems to me that this is written as an interpretation of Christianity...
Go to sleep little baby, when you wake you shall have all the pretty little horses
(live your life devoid of reality, later there will be heaven)
Way down yonder lies etc
(your true essence crying out)
Rest your head upon the clover
(comfortably rest on a beautiful story)
Whilst your mammy's watching over
(God)
