well basically win 98 was initially released in december 2007 because they wanted to finish it on christmas or something or something else, and was called win 97 but it was very flawed and was reworked and called 98 as we know it. There are copies of windows where it is called 97 but it is REALLY hard to find. Don't believe me? Google it. And sorry for my english, it is not my native.

I work at a hospital pharmacy where we run a massive prescription work queue program. We store and access the information of thousands of our patients. More the 11 years after it's release, we still run XP. People wonder why many businesses still run it. Probably because It was good and not as complicating as Vista and 7 for beginners. Also, I must be one of few who think they're shooting themselves in the foot with Windows 8.

@bluejay55118 My school still uses windows XP, too! And I must agree with you that microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot with Windows 8 by making just one OS for tablets and PCs. Windows 7 is definitely better. Microsoft, in my opinion is making the same mistake they did with vista by putting in too many new features.

The great jump to the really true technology was Windows 95 passing from 16 to 32 bits... all the followings operating system after 95 until now are 32 bits.. .. the longest Microsoft OS is XP, from 2001, yet! today there are many computers using it!.... Windows ME was not so bad for me at least.. i was have it installed and NEVER got blue screen, but, W95 is the only one, no one is like that... 95 & 98 were the best.

@jakubjakub003 When you came from the line of Windows 95/98 (very good, but unstable OS) and Windows 2000 (basically the daddy of XP, but not full of features) it was a VERY good OS. It was very reliable, solid OS and the majority of computers today still used it.

XP deficiencies came basically kept stacking with its gaping maw security issues. Programs could literally install themselves without asking on the early versions of Internet Explorer. Firefox was really the chariot when it came out.

windows me is not so bad... its run pretty well on old PCs and its better than win98, because it manages usb devices. Yes, win98 se manages usb too, but me looks way better and it has some other new features too :D

1 year later they had xp what is a lot better, but people with 256mb ram or lower had performance issues with xp...

i loved me, i used to have as my first computer windows 95, that got upgraded to 98 then when me came i bought it the day it came out and installed it, i loved it then when xp came out i tried upgrading to that and as my computer was installing xp the hard drives failed both the master and slave so that was the time i thought i needed a new pc. but i loved me, used it every day for a year and i never, ever got the blue screen.

Correction: the first modern BSoD actually came out in Win3.1 when it was the 1st to resembled the Win9x BSoDs. In Win2.0 it was likely still jibberish like in Win 1.0.
