old grey whistle test came and went. democrats reign supreme. i don't mr. rutger howser there will be doing the strand anytime soon. do you recommend the same old scene for ever and ever?
This song is archetypal Roxy. Ferry is the only performer I can think of who can pull off the enigmatic trick of being an affected self-regarding poseur who also doesn't take himself seriously. Magic! And you can count the number of males who wouldn't swap him for looks on the fingers of one hand.
@vashna3799 don't forget, BRYAN FERRY, created the band..created the style..created the music and created the lyrics.. all created for the first 2 albums..the ones BRIAN ENO participated in..i know ENO, treated the instruments but ROXY MUSIC, was BRYAN FERRY'S brainchild..it was his baby..
@801liveable It may have been ferry's brainchild but they were only a great band when eno was in it ,and an ok band after he left and who today is the more reverved talent in music today ,ferry or eno ,its eno.
@vashna3799 your statement is inane.what's your measurement of beng great.ROXY MUSIC, was great with or without ENO.ROXY MUSIC, is the most influential band to come out of GREAT BRITTAIN,after THE BEATLES.ROXY'S legacy was defined with ENO and without him. both BRYAN FERRY and BRIAN ENO are held in equal high regard. their influence is unchallenged. i'm not into comparison.from your statment you are.ROXY=TALKING HEADS DURAN DURAN RADIOHEAD ULTRAVOX DEPECHE MODE BOWIE THE CARS=that's greatness.
@vashna3799 so what's your point? so he produced a few albums..don't foget U2, too..who do you think produced most of the ROXY MUSIC albums? they were "produced" so well they spawned..talking heads, duran duran, radiohead, ultravox, the cars, some of bowie's later work, depeche mode, coldplay, be-bop deluxe, muse, and on and on..i'll try to write it clearly again: BOTH BRYAN FERRY AND BRIAN ENO ARE HELD IN HIGH ESTEEM..
@jervonics2112 I beleve Eno was using mainly a VCS3 in those days, although I don't see on in that rig - that actually looks like a mixing console. I believe I read somewhere that he used to mix the shows from the stage as well, which sounds like a terribly difficult thing to do . . .
@cidedwards31a THat would be Phil Manzanera the guitarist, Search Google images with his name and you'll pick up a few early pics of him - the one with the orange background playing the white strat is from the first Roxy LP
As much as I love Roxy, this performance seems clearly contrived to push buttons amongst the music industry orthodoxy. Not necessarily a bad thing, but hardly the sort of stunt a band this good should feel the need to resort to for attention. Sight unseen the music always spoke for itself.
I always thought the Roxy Music lineup with Eno was the best. You had the glam rock look of Eno, the spivs - Andy McKay and Bryan Ferry; Phil Manzanera who looked like a hippie; Paul Thompson and Rik Kenton who play with a sardonic smirk on their faces. All adds up to a fresh, somewhat chaotic but interesting mix. Great clip!
A new level of incomprehensibility. I might be concerned about the kind of people my sister was associating with if I had a sister....:-) Merry Christmas!
is Andy Mc cay, wearing one of those crutch pieces, that protect your privates from getting injured with a cricket ball. either that are he has a big pair of balls.
I have heard them all from The Beatles to Ludicris and eminem and the Strand is one of the greatest songs ever made. What style. Absolutley brilliant. Peace.
At this time I was in my late teens. It was a "gray gray world". There was glam rock, but without any real music content. Then Roxy apperared amist the grey. It seemed like a glam rock band, but these guys could play anything.. and out of the box. It blew the compertition out the water & took Europe by storm because it was so revolutionary unique & pure class ground breaking. Roxy had 4 mega hit albums in a row in europe but America knew nothing of them because americans just listen to the radio
This was the year, like late 1973 that I sat up babysitting my brother; a 13 year old girl, and loving this music that I found on some obscure American TV late night show. Collected about 4 of their albums. I recall Phil Manzanera and "Amazona".
Wasn't for decades that I realized the albums appeared to have photo covers of women who'd been raped or ravished, something like that, and still don't know why..
@quartzimaging notice that Brian Eno was working with Roxy Music when this was happening...and with David Byrne / Talking Heads Later on (before / during the "Big Suit" days)
Look at Eno in that sparkly poodle thing! I'm a huge Eno fan, who isn't? And I just about had an analogasm when I saw the controls for that synth he's playing. Too bad the mix barely has any keyboards in it.That guitarist has the wing shirt that looks like it was made by his mom. Ferry is such a performer. They look downright crammed on that stage. And I'll have to remember to punctuate a random conversation with "Do the Strand!" and point to the sky.
73 was much more free people was into music and in to having a good time roxy was part of it along with a lot of other bands a lot of people to day say they wish they was around in those times the music was so good.
The opening comments are quite interesting and a nice set up for the song. "Do The Strand" was always a gas, perhaps too smart for mainstream America in its time, but welcome to us more open-minded misfit types. I totally get off on that repititive riff they get into after the third verse ; I never want it to end every time I hear it. Of course I still don't know exactly how you do the Strand here in 2010. I'll figure it out one day.
@aewd1980 Here puss, puss. Here puss, puss. There's a nice pussy cat. You still modelling women's underwear for Oxfam? Anyway..make sure you sew those new gussets back into those secondhand knickers. And do the job right!! 10p an hour is not to be sniffed at (like the way you sniff the gussets.) If you get my meaning......miaow.
You wanted to know why some of the dudes in Roxy Music were tarting it up...I replied it was 1973 - because the glam scene was characterized by a lot of gayness and bisexualism. Fun times if you swung that way!
A great song to have a quick plate of charcuterie with, wash it down with a good Mosel wine such as Steinhammer Schloss 2006...I picked up a bottle in waitrose recently for £5.........otherwise a decent Normandy cider such as Vieux moulin...don't forget the Caper berries !
A truly great and influential band. When they appeared on The Old Grey Whistle Test, that this session was taken from they were not able to perform live, creating that unique Roxy Music sound, due to the technical limitations of the studio and so they had to mime. It says this on the DVD, which I have a copy of, but doesn't mean that they were not able to perform well live, just that the BBC were unable to set up the equipment to enable them to get that true Roxy sound.
I've always thought that 'Doing The Strand' = being yourself, no matter what anyone else thinks. Every other dance craze that they mention in the lyrics (like The Mashed Potato, or The Beguine) is something that was once really popular as a mass phenomena, then fell by the wayside. I always thought they were trying to say that you'll only ever endure and 'last forever' in popular culture by being truly yourself in the first place, and doing something others hadn't thought of yet...
As the song says, you can't beat Strand Power. But I think Roxy Music lip-synched this one. Still a great performance just to see Brian Eno on his "instrument".
Like said below, it does have a strange flavor to it...but that's exactly what draws you to it...it's not like the other same old stuff you heard at the time. I love it. :)
@cree8vision I know there were precedents for they did, and I'd heard both T. Rex and Bowie before hearing this. In fact, I'd heard tons of weird music before hearing this--Waits, Zappa, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, Stockhausen, Varese, Sonic Youth, Captain Beefheart, The Partridge Family, etc. "Do the Strand" still sounds weird. Because it's weird. Not unprecedented, but weird.

I had all the Roxy Music albums. And went to many many concerts in Atlanta.
But never had the chance to see Roxy. Just not popular enought here to come, I guess.
This is great to finally get to see the guys that made the music. But how to decribe it?
"Otherworldly", "alien" maybe.
A blend of Casblanca and Blade Runner.

I always thought they were trying to say that you'll only ever endure and 'last forever' in popular culture by being truly yourself in the first place, and doing something others hadn't thought of yet...

They were so groundbreaking; matchless. True musicians in every sense of the word.

despues de los albumes Roxy Music y for you pleasure, Roxy Music se convirtio en una mierda, La vida de Roxy Music fue BRIAN ENO

I love it. :)

Sounds weird even today. Must have sounded really bizarre in1973.

@dnggitg Not really. Roxy came out after T Rex and Bowie so they were part of the glam era. Unusual but not bizarre.
