  • old grey whistle test came and went. democrats reign supreme. i don't mr. rutger howser there will be doing the strand anytime soon. do you recommend the same old scene for ever and ever?

  • Ahhhhh roxy music are great so so great, I just wish bryan ferry wasn't a conservitive

  • I had all the Roxy Music albums. And went to many many concerts in Atlanta.

But never had the chance to see Roxy. Just not popular enought here to come, I guess.

This is great to finally get to see the guys that made the music. But how to decribe it?

    "Otherworldly", "alien" maybe.

A blend of Casblanca and Blade Runner.

  • This song is archetypal Roxy. Ferry is the only performer I can think of who can pull off the enigmatic trick of being an affected self-regarding poseur who also doesn't take himself seriously. Magic! And you can count the number of males who wouldn't swap him for looks on the fingers of one hand.

  • I just shit me pants.

  • ENO!

  • laissez-faire le strand

  • Bryan Ferry is comin' to Cleveland on October 10th. I have 1st Row, Center

  • @HEMIChopper69 you lucky dog..i'll be sitting in the section right behind with my wife..

  • 1:18 to skip all the chatter

  • That blazer and the shoulder pads in it are so hot. I really want it.

  • brian eno was the coolest member, and the smartest

  • @vashna3799 don't forget, BRYAN FERRY, created the band..created the style..created the music and created the lyrics.. all created for the first 2 albums..the ones BRIAN ENO participated in..i know ENO, treated the instruments but ROXY MUSIC, was BRYAN FERRY'S brainchild..it was his baby..

  • @801liveable It may have been ferry's brainchild but they were only a great band when eno was in it ,and an ok band after he left and who today is the more reverved talent in music today ,ferry or eno ,its eno.

  • @vashna3799 your statement is inane.what's your measurement of beng great.ROXY MUSIC, was great with or without ENO.ROXY MUSIC, is the most influential band to come out of GREAT BRITTAIN,after THE BEATLES.ROXY'S legacy was defined with ENO and without him. both BRYAN FERRY and BRIAN ENO are held in equal high regard. their influence is unchallenged. i'm not into comparison.from your statment you are.ROXY=TALKING HEADS DURAN DURAN RADIOHEAD ULTRAVOX DEPECHE MODE BOWIE THE CARS=that's greatness.

  • @801liveable Yes ,and who produced Talking Heads and Radioheads greatest songs ,Brian Eno, not Ferry

  • @vashna3799 so what's your point? so he produced a few albums..don't foget U2, too..who do you think produced most of the ROXY MUSIC albums? they were "produced" so well they spawned..talking heads, duran duran, radiohead, ultravox, the cars, some of bowie's later work, depeche mode, coldplay, be-bop deluxe, muse, and on and on..i'll try to write it clearly again: BOTH BRYAN FERRY AND BRIAN ENO ARE HELD IN HIGH ESTEEM..

  • @801liveable Your not Otis Ferry are you ? Its just that you protest a bit too much

  • @vashna3799 that, my friend is pretty good..take care..

  • 'Honest music'? Did they have to pass a polygraph test??

  • Brian Eno on Synthesizer ????????????

  • @HEMIChopper69 Hello ???

  • Did Phil Manzanera pick up some of the Commodores' laundry by mistake? just asking

  • class

  • Comment removed

  • Just out of curiosity, did Bryan Ferry ever kiss and make up with Brian Eno in the end? Or vice versa?? Anybody know??

  • @jrmetmoi Yeah they did for Ferry's album "Frantic" They collaborated for it and Eno produced the album.

  • @Gunnxorz ENO, did not produce "FRANTIC"..COLIN GOOD..RHETT DAVIES AND BRYAN FERRY did..

  • Do you actually know Bryan & his son Otis? And, who is, and why is 1 or both of them a total dick? I'm very curious.

  • @bongeoz01 Otis is a dick to people because of fox hunting and his strong belief in it.

  • Do you actually know Bryan & his son? And, how would you describe this dickness?

I don't know 1 way or another, just asking u 2 back up yr shit.

  • Ah, Roxy Music; Saw theim in Oslo 1976. Pure magic!! They seemed to me in those days of denim to be from another planet! Kaareww

  • Is that Eno in that silver sparkle get up? Check out the bad ass Keyboard setup, is it a custom rig done by Moog?

  • @jervonics2112 I beleve Eno was using mainly a VCS3 in those days, although I don't see on in that rig - that actually looks like a mixing console. I believe I read somewhere that he used to mix the shows from the stage as well, which sounds like a terribly difficult thing to do . . .

  • @jervonics2112 I always thought Eno made his own equipment down in his basement. Like plywood cabinets with knobs. Nobody else like him!

  • I don't understand the hostilities! Ferry and Roxy, have always been upliftingly superb!

  • Click on this 1:19 here to skip past Mr. Chatty McChattermouth & get down to business.

  • @alexmortland Thank you...........

  • they mustve done this twice cause the version saw ,the bassist had glasses that looked like fly eyes

  • @cidedwards31a THat would be Phil Manzanera the guitarist, Search Google images with his name and you'll pick up a few early pics of him - the one with the orange background playing the white strat is from the first Roxy LP

  • As much as I love Roxy, this performance seems clearly contrived to push buttons amongst the music industry orthodoxy. Not necessarily a bad thing, but hardly the sort of stunt a band this good should feel the need to resort to for attention. Sight unseen the music always spoke for itself.

  • @problem49 yes but Ferry was always a showman too

  • Great band, but these lyrics are retarded.

  • Cheers. Great song though.

  • Not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Disgraceful.

  • Priceless!!!

  • Hey did u meet the band from Saturn? No? well say hi,the keys guy seems the most earth like!

  • Sorry, but the guy on the left playing keyboards with the long blond hair looks like he's from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Could he be Eno?

  • @Winston41Smith Well observed, Winston ...

  • @Winston41Smith yes he could

  • @Winston41Smith Yep!

  • I always thought the Roxy Music lineup with Eno was the best. You had the glam rock look of Eno, the spivs - Andy McKay and Bryan Ferry; Phil Manzanera who looked like a hippie; Paul Thompson and Rik Kenton who play with a sardonic smirk on their faces. All adds up to a fresh, somewhat chaotic but interesting mix. Great clip!

  • Look at Andy's crutch.

  • Si, it was this song. Thx

  • 3:46 is sickk.

  • The first single i bought, age 11

  • it´s not live

  • No matter what state of recession their hair was in, 70's British rock stars just let that shit grow.

  • @Astrodan2600 no doubt you are referring to the insidious brian eno

  • Roxy Music was popular in America!

  • @garygomesg So was your Mum

  • @viewmore100 Who says these discussions don't contain sophistication?

  • @garygomesg @ Gaygo me Your Sister.....Last night

  • @viewmore100

A new level of incomprehensibility. I might be concerned about the kind of people my sister was associating with if I had a sister....:-) Merry Christmas!

  • @garygomesg @ Gaygo Suckmywhat?

  • Brian Eno on the mixing desk using a VCS3 synthesizer.... F'in Priceless !!!!

  • Love the travolta move at the end. Ha!

  • @dirtynuke

Way before Travolta, my friend. And way ahead of their time (thanks Eno).

  • Top stuff mr ferry. Roxy music kick ass without even lifting a foot

  • A solution to teenage revolution. Now, if only those rioting students last week had ever heard Roxy Music.

But then, Bryan Ferry named his son Otis, and he turned out to be a total dick.

  • is Andy Mc cay, wearing one of those crutch pieces, that protect your privates from getting injured with a cricket ball. either that are he has a big pair of balls.

  • this is the best thing ever recorded by humans.

  • I have heard them all from The Beatles to Ludicris and eminem and the Strand is one of the greatest songs ever made. What style. Absolutley brilliant. Peace.

  • @makingsense53

    couldn't agree more.

  • can someone upload this clip without the bleedin woffle at the start

  • @leonaofficial

exactly!!!!! the song and bryans face is all we wanna see!!!!

  • At this time I was in my late teens. It was a "gray gray world". There was glam rock, but without any real music content. Then Roxy apperared amist the grey. It seemed like a glam rock band, but these guys could play anything.. and out of the box. It blew the compertition out the water & took Europe by storm because it was so revolutionary unique & pure class ground breaking. Roxy had 4 mega hit albums in a row in europe but America knew nothing of them because americans just listen to the radio

  • Bryan is the definition of cool !!!

  • The great Roxy Music with the very great Bryan Ferry.

Always at the top of their game!

  • This was the year, like late 1973 that I sat up babysitting my brother; a 13 year old girl, and loving this music that I found on some obscure American TV late night show. Collected about 4 of their albums. I recall Phil Manzanera and "Amazona".

Wasn't for decades that I realized the albums appeared to have photo covers of women who'd been raped or ravished, something like that, and still don't know why..

  • Is this mimed it sounds almost identical to the Record

  • @Maguirearch

Your kidding right? All the groups on TOGWT had to play live. Or they didn't play.

  • Sex Pistols were originally called the strand because Steve and Paul loved Roxy Music

  • who the HELL is this guy speaking at the beginning fucking shut up and play the fucking song cunt

  • @geoffdoor LOL!!! True though!

  • @geoffdoor haha i agree

  • liking ferry's lapels! now i think i know where david byrne got the idea for the giant suit ;)

  • how bizarr. best avangard band to day

  • stupid cameraman, why not to capture all of them at the end?

  • Look at Eno in that sparkly poodle thing! I'm a huge Eno fan, who isn't? And I just about had an analogasm when I saw the controls for that synth he's playing. Too bad the mix barely has any keyboards in it.That guitarist has the wing shirt that looks like it was made by his mom. Ferry is such a performer. They look downright crammed on that stage. And I'll have to remember to punctuate a random conversation with "Do the Strand!" and point to the sky.

  • Slow and gentle.......

    Sentimental.......

    All styles served here.......

    Louis seize he prefer.......

    Laissez-faire le strand!!

  • Do it on the table>>>>>> est --- I suppose

  • Brian Eno looks like my grandmother.

  • Great video but I cannot watch Bryan without luaghing because of Stevie Riks's impression of him haha.

  • FANTASTIC....TRIBUTE BOWIE

  • DO THE STRAND, LOVE

  • wonderful!

  • Bryan Ferry makes the most hilarious singing faces.

  • Hilarious...He was starting a "craze" dance...the Strand!! Roxy was brilliant...that's all there is to it.

  • @sportsmediaamerica hear hear!

  • In the intro the guy mentioned the clothes they wear, he forgot to mention the codpiece worn by the sax player...

  • its the new wave

  • Ladytron, say no more, I am please I grew up with era

  • @kopynd ditto

  • i want his suit

  • Very nice! Need to get this song!

  • can you edit the boring bloke out, I want to hear the music

  • eno over compensates for his hair

  • @54taqiyya hahaha

  • my mums seen roxy music more than 20 times . and now i love them just as much as she dus

  • They dressed and looked some of them looked fancy! but boy they can rock!

  • I'm sorry for past comments. These cats were too much!

  • Ahh. Come on.

This was actually broadcast for the first ever Red Nose day with Rikki Fulton taking place of Bryan Ferry.

    Obvious !!!

  • 73 was much more free people was into music and in to having a good time roxy was part of it along with a lot of other bands a lot of people to day say they wish they was around in those times the music was so good.

  • They're all excellent but especially love Brian Eno's look back then. Fabulously Glam.

  • Phil Manzanera, beyond guitar, beyond excellent, a great unheralded guitarist.

  • The opening comments are quite interesting and a nice set up for the song. "Do The Strand" was always a gas, perhaps too smart for mainstream America in its time, but welcome to us more open-minded misfit types. I totally get off on that repititive riff they get into after the third verse ; I never want it to end every time I hear it. Of course I still don't know exactly how you do the Strand here in 2010. I'll figure it out one day.

  • Bryan Ferry should've been in the vampire film with Brad Pitt and the other guy...

  • @seanreillyireland Great song Sean and it looks like Bryan beat Travolta to that Saturday Night Fever stance by a few years.(at the end)

  • @seanreillyireland: Hey, mate, these blokes were on that rockumentary series that I was telling you about before.

  • ♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫

the legacy lives on ive listed me rare roxy music album trumps on ebay ...enjoy

    ♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫♫

  • not a bad song but why do some of the band members behave all hairy fairy?

  • It was 1973...LOL!

  • Comment removed

  • @ohiokentstate - i knew it was 1973 but thanks anyway.

  • @aewd1980 He's ever so polite. Isn't he?

Thanks anyway...he says. What a pussy cat!!!! LOL

Muhahahaha. Probably spends his time knitting jumpers for Oxfam!!

  • @k1IIer2one - actually, i just might report you to youtube due to your foul and degrading language.

  • @aewd1980 Here puss, puss. Here puss, puss. There's a nice pussy cat. You still modelling women's underwear for Oxfam? Anyway..make sure you sew those new gussets back into those secondhand knickers. And do the job right!! 10p an hour is not to be sniffed at (like the way you sniff the gussets.) If you get my meaning......miaow.

  • You wanted to know why some of the dudes in Roxy Music were tarting it up...I replied it was 1973 - because the glam scene was characterized by a lot of gayness and bisexualism. Fun times if you swung that way!

  • @ohiokentstate - i can believe it. looking at the way some of them dressed, wouldn't surprise me at all.

  • @aewd1980 it's called the 70's

  • @mySLICKname - no!!!! you don't say!!!! old enough to remember are you?

  • Years ahead of the competition.

  • @75amoeba well said!

  • Rododendron is a nice flower? Great!

  • eno is the juice of english music... at least his hair was :D lol

  • A great song to have a quick plate of charcuterie with, wash it down with a good Mosel wine such as Steinhammer Schloss 2006...I picked up a bottle in waitrose recently for £5.........otherwise a decent Normandy cider such as Vieux moulin...don't forget the Caper berries !

  • nat "LOLd" at that one! indeeeeed

    still my #1 Roxy song

  • hahah..absoloutley brilliant!.....oh man those lyrics!

  • A truly great and influential band. When they appeared on The Old Grey Whistle Test, that this session was taken from they were not able to perform live, creating that unique Roxy Music sound, due to the technical limitations of the studio and so they had to mime. It says this on the DVD, which I have a copy of, but doesn't mean that they were not able to perform well live, just that the BBC were unable to set up the equipment to enable them to get that true Roxy sound.

    A great song nontheless.

  • The vocals are live, not the band. This was common practice and still is in some instances...

  • Ah, fair enough I must have missed that point.

    Still great though.

  • Now why doesn't Eno shake his shoulders like that any more? I feel cheated. :)

  • @creatornat

    Totally! Who knew!? :)

  • "Louis XVI, il préfère, laisser faire le "strand" in French in this song.

  • Eno looks like a.... well, there's really no words to describe how Eno looks.

  • I've always thought that 'Doing The Strand' = being yourself, no matter what anyone else thinks. Every other dance craze that they mention in the lyrics (like The Mashed Potato, or The Beguine) is something that was once really popular as a mass phenomena, then fell by the wayside. I always thought they were trying to say that you'll only ever endure and 'last forever' in popular culture by being truly yourself in the first place, and doing something others hadn't thought of yet...

  • They were so groundbreaking; matchless. True musicians in every sense of the word.

  • make love to the camera, bryan.

  • DO THE STRANDSKI

  • How can one person be that cool?

  • Well, if it's good enough for Guernica, I'll Do the Strand, too!

  • despues de los albumes Roxy Music y for you pleasure, Roxy Music se convirtio en una mierda, La vida de Roxy Music fue BRIAN ENO

  • As the song says, you can't beat Strand Power. But I think Roxy Music lip-synched this one. Still a great performance just to see Brian Eno on his "instrument".

  • loved roxy

  • Like said below, it does have a strange flavor to it...but that's exactly what draws you to it...it's not like the other same old stuff you heard at the time. I love it. :)

  • Sounds weird even today. Must have sounded really bizarre in1973.

  • @dnggitg Not really. Roxy came out after T Rex and Bowie so they were part of the glam era. Unusual but not bizarre.

  • @cree8vision I know there were precedents for they did, and I'd heard both T. Rex and Bowie before hearing this. In fact, I'd heard tons of weird music before hearing this--Waits, Zappa, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, Stockhausen, Varese, Sonic Youth, Captain Beefheart, The Partridge Family, etc. "Do the Strand" still sounds weird. Because it's weird. Not unprecedented, but weird.

  • @dnggitg nicht wirklich ... we did it ... :-))))

  • This wasn't live, was it?

  • Comment removed

  • Fine miming there from Ferry. Almost didn't make it for HAD (your fill of quadrilles)

  • One of the best Roxy songs ever and I just LOVE LOVE LOVE IT LOVE THEM FOREVER

  • Do the Strandski !!

Glam rock at it's finest!!! They've only gotten better with age like a fine wine.

  • Jerry Hall got to hit this great talent before she moved on to Mick Jagger..bad move Jerry...
