Hey Shyamalan! Fine, change the story a bit to fit the length of the movie, and how characters look. BUT GET THE NAMES CORRECT. THEY ARE CLEARLY SAID IN THE CARTOON!
IMPORTANT-stick to the actual way bending is done in the series, by which the ELEMENTS MOVE WITH THE ACTIONS and NOT make the actions and then the elements move, because bending is supposed to be an extension of themselves. Shyamalan, REMAKE THE MOVIE WITH CHANGES OR LET A REAL DIRECTOR RESTORE THE HONOR OF THE LAST AIRBENDER!!!!

I don't get why all of Shyamalan's work lately has been really, there is no other word to describe them but bad. I agree with a lot of people here that he should stay away from scriptwriting and such. The movie really disappointed me. The cartoon series was awesome, Shyamalan used to be good. Loved LOVED the movie. You just have to accept the movie as is, just like books turned into movies can leave things out, just take it as it is. It was great! Im going to go again and i pray they make the other books into movies too! Awesome :D
The first time I saw the movie, I noticed 2 things. 1: The dialogue couldn't have been worse, and 2: It didn't seem like any of the scenes were long enough, thus not giving them time to develop the characters we all know and love. But I still managed to enjoy the movie, and I don't think they totally wrecked it. I actually went to see it a 2nd time, and I agree with Nightbender that it's much better the 2nd time through. So if we can at least get better dialogue, we'll be in good shape.

God... this really sucked. I am very disapointed with the movie. I would love it if someone else directed and wrote it. How about Guillermo Del Toro!!!
If they want the second one to work, they need to get M. Night Shyamalan off as a writer. His writing was odd. There wasn't any space for character development. And the acting could have been better. Better yet, Paramount should release Shyamalan from his contract and get a new director and a team of professional writers to finish the trilogy. That's if they even greenlight the 2nd one after seeing how the critics tore this one apart and if this film covers the production value.
I debuted at #2 behind Twilight with $53 million for the weekend and has grossed $70 million total since it's release. So I don't think it's a flop. But if it doesn't cover it's $150 million budget, it will considered a flop. It's already considered a flop critics wise.

DO NOT watch the movie in 3D! 3D tacked on after the fact to a 2D live-action movie never works right. It would look, at best, like cardboard cutouts on a stage. The CGI could be 3D, but that would be even more jarring with the 2D cardboard cutout characters standing there emitting 3D CGI effects.
You know the criticisms on the flame effects? Shyamalan, while not a good writer, is a quite capable director. He went for realistic flames, not Hollywood flames. But the 3D glasses dims them down.
@awsomegirl147258369, yes, it would do that to the CGI (though it dims down the fire effects, and the dim fire effects were a major point of negative criticism by several major critics who saw only the 3D version, including Roger Ebert). The live-action scenery, however, would look fakey.
The only way to shoot live action in 3D is with a 3D camera that has two lenses and rolls of film (or CCDs or sets of CCDs for a modern digital camera), spaced a bit apart horizontally, to provide parallax.
They did not do this. They filmed it as 2D, with ordinary single-lens cameras. The CGI can easily be re-rendered as 3D, but 3D can only be faked onto live action shot after the fact.
It looks even less realistic than the Turner colorization process that attempted to convert old B&W movies and TV shows into color, but the colors winded up looking simultaneously too garish and too flat/muted, and not very realistic. Caucasian skin looked like pink makeup, for instance.
Another analogy would be stereo simulation of mono sound sources. You can download free audio software to demonstrate this for yourself, but if you take a mono recording of a band or orchestra, and apply a stereo simulation filter to it, it will indeed give the IMPRESSION of stereo, but if you listen carefully, you canNOT tell that some instruments are coming from the left, some from the right, and some from the center. Ditto pseudo-surround effects simulations.

@AlabamaSoldier what this was nothing like dragon ball evolution. this followed the storyline so well they only changed it up a little bit because its only 2 hours and they had to fit the entire season 1 into it and its not an exact copy of the show. every adaptation of any book, series or anything always has changes. im a huge fan of the cartoon and i loved it. my opinion

The names: Ahng? Eero (sounds like a Greek flatbred spiced-lamb sandwich)? Go Soak(a) your head, Shyamalan, for that reason alone! How's Sokka's introductory poem in "Tales of Ba Sing Se" gonna work now?
Three years for Sozin's Comet? Understandable in case Noah's voice changes in the interim, I suppose.
Firebenders having to use existing flame unless they're very high level or Sozin's Comet is present? WHY!?
In the interests of time, they cut out a lot — so why did General Zhao say the bit about the Moon and Ocean Spirits Over and Over and Over and OVER again and again and again and again!? And why was Ozai in on it? That was a violation of character: Ozai knew better than to try something like that. Zhao's main character flaw was that he never planned ahead nor cared for consequences.
@COMALiteJ ozai was in it so that it could be explained to people not fimilar with the cartoon. and again with the firebending change its not a carbon copy of the show. in every adaptation of a book, series or anything there is always changes
@robinclank2, I don't mind that Ozai was in the movie. He was, in fact, in Book One, albeit his face always hidden or shadowed.
What I object to was Ozai being in on the PLAN to kill the Moon Spirit. He'd've known better. In the series, the moon didn't turn red when the Moon Spirit DIED. It turned red BEFORE that, when it was CAPTURED and removed from its Sacred Fountain. When the Spirit was KILLED, the Moon VANISHED.
What would happen to the world if the Moon really were to vanish?
Cosidering that the Moon's gravity is what causes tides (and indeed this very thing was what taught the first Waterbenders how to bend — they were imitating the Moon and the tides!), the sudden loss of the Moon would cause world-wide tsunamis that would devastate every coastal nation, INCLUDING the Fire Nation. Ozai was a very careful schemer, unlike Zhao. He would neverNeverNEVER have been party to such a thing.
In game terms, Ozai looks a LOT of moves ahead. Zhao looks no more than two.
Which brings up another point: In the series, the Ocean Spirit possessed Aang, while the latter was in the Avatar State, in apparent anger at the Fire Nation fleet, which together they destroyed. In the movie, Aang did this all by himself. Why? M. Night wasted at least ten minutes over Zhao and Ozai repeating the bit about the ancient library and the Moon and Ocean Spirits, again and again and again. And yet the Ocean Spirit doesn't even play a role!?
@COMALiteJ m.night explained why he changed the names. they were pronounced the asian way and how can a name difference make a movie suck. its an adaptation of the cartoon its not going to be an exact copy of it. you must know that there were going to be changes
@liveandlearn008, I beg to differ. Tales of Ba Sing Se also included Momo's Tale, in which we first find out about where Appa is. But yes, I doubt we'll see it in Book 2.

Every time I watch any of these joy filled videos...it makes me sad that The Last Airbender tanked. It looked like the cast had so much fun doing the movie. To hear Noah talk about Hung Guar and Northern/Southern Shaolin made me so happy...and still a bit more sad...I really wanted this movie to do well...

HOWEVER, because it is being released Internationally, they had to change the pronunciations to the correct, Asian pronunciation so they don't offend the Asians.

Which means- stylistically, it was set in an AU asian world, but everything else was american; the actors, the way the drama was executed... Which means the way they pronounced it in the show "I-roh" (EYE RO) would be how the writers MEANT it to be pronounced. It's not a chinese tv show, so why should the film feel the need to have all the correct pronunciation with american and indian actors?

My advice for the next film:
Director - M.Night Shyamalan
Script Writer - There is no one should write the script except...ehh.. I THINK THE CREATORS OF THE CARTOON should write the script and storyline.
Cast - Same cast and a new girl for Toph.
Hope they learn from the mistakes they made for this film. NEXT ONE SHOULD BE BETTER!!!

Better yet, Paramount should release Shyamalan from his contract and get a new director and a team of professional writers to finish the trilogy. That's if they even greenlight the 2nd one after seeing how the critics tore this one apart and if this film covers the production value.

I debuted at #2 behind Twilight with $53 million for the weekend and has grossed $70 million total since it's release. So I don't think it's a flop. But if it doesn't cover it's $150 million budget, it will considered a flop. It's already considered a flop critics wise.

DO NOT watch the movie in 3D! 3D tacked on after the fact to a 2D live-action movie never works right. It would look, at best, like cardboard cutouts on a stage. The CGI could be 3D, but that would be even more jarring with the 2D cardboard cutout characters standing there emitting 3D CGI effects.
You know the criticisms on the flame effects? Shyamalan, while not a good writer, is a quite capable director. He went for realistic flames, not Hollywood flames. But the 3D glasses dims them down.

@awsomegirl147258369, yes, it would do that to the CGI (though it dims down the fire effects, and the dim fire effects were a major point of negative criticism by several major critics who saw only the 3D version, including Roger Ebert). The live-action scenery, however, would look fakey.
The only way to shoot live action in 3D is with a 3D camera that has two lenses and rolls of film (or CCDs or sets of CCDs for a modern digital camera), spaced a bit apart horizontally, to provide parallax.

They did not do this. They filmed it as 2D, with ordinary single-lens cameras. The CGI can easily be re-rendered as 3D, but 3D can only be faked onto live action shot after the fact.
It looks even less realistic than the Turner colorization process that attempted to convert old B&W movies and TV shows into color, but the colors winded up looking simultaneously too garish and too flat/muted, and not very realistic. Caucasian skin looked like pink makeup, for instance.

Another analogy would be stereo simulation of mono sound sources. You can download free audio software to demonstrate this for yourself, but if you take a mono recording of a band or orchestra, and apply a stereo simulation filter to it, it will indeed give the IMPRESSION of stereo, but if you listen carefully, you canNOT tell that some instruments are coming from the left, some from the right, and some from the center. Ditto pseudo-surround effects simulations.

In the interests of time, they cut out a lot — so why did General Zhao say the bit about the Moon and Ocean Spirits Over and Over and Over and OVER again and again and again and again!? And why was Ozai in on it? That was a violation of character: Ozai knew better than to try something like that. Zhao's main character flaw was that he never planned ahead nor cared for consequences.

@robinclank2, I don't mind that Ozai was in the movie. He was, in fact, in Book One, albeit his face always hidden or shadowed.
What I object to was Ozai being in on the PLAN to kill the Moon Spirit. He'd've known better. In the series, the moon didn't turn red when the Moon Spirit DIED. It turned red BEFORE that, when it was CAPTURED and removed from its Sacred Fountain. When the Spirit was KILLED, the Moon VANISHED.
What would happen to the world if the Moon really were to vanish?

Cosidering that the Moon's gravity is what causes tides (and indeed this very thing was what taught the first Waterbenders how to bend — they were imitating the Moon and the tides!), the sudden loss of the Moon would cause world-wide tsunamis that would devastate every coastal nation, INCLUDING the Fire Nation. Ozai was a very careful schemer, unlike Zhao. He would neverNeverNEVER have been party to such a thing.
In game terms, Ozai looks a LOT of moves ahead. Zhao looks no more than two.

Which brings up another point: In the series, the Ocean Spirit possessed Aang, while the latter was in the Avatar State, in apparent anger at the Fire Nation fleet, which together they destroyed. In the movie, Aang did this all by himself. Why? M. Night wasted at least ten minutes over Zhao and Ozai repeating the bit about the ancient library and the Moon and Ocean Spirits, again and again and again. And yet the Ocean Spirit doesn't even play a role!?
The ten minutes could've been better used.

Every time I watch any of these joy filled videos...it makes me sad that The Last Airbender tanked. It looked like the cast had so much fun doing the movie. To hear Noah talk about Hung Guar and Northern/Southern Shaolin made me so happy...and still a bit more sad...I really wanted this movie to do well...

HOWEVER, because it is being released Internationally, they had to change the pronunciations to the correct, Asian pronunciation so they don't offend the Asians.

@MrsPippinBaggins NO it's not EYE-ROH. In chinese, it's ee-roh. All of the chinese words were pronounced with the chinese dialect in the film, unlike the show. In the show a good half were said correctly)

Which means- stylistically, it was set in an AU asian world, but everything else was american; the actors, the way the drama was executed... Which means the way they pronounced it in the show "I-roh" (EYE RO) would be how the writers MEANT it to be pronounced. It's not a chinese tv show, so why should the film feel the need to have all the correct pronunciation with american and indian actors?
