Great stuff by Sting. His voice IS subtly well-suited to these songs.
However, he should stick to singing and not talking as his knowledge of music history is embarrasingly lacking. John Dunstable was an even bigger superstar than Dowland in his time, and about 200 years before Dowland. Yikes.
epn10 and direngrey2143....you guys are pretentious dicks....when you can do better put your money where your mouths are....hopefully it's better than where they've been to this point.....dicks : )
@Tullius Musician modesty is not sincere. "Modest" people sell more records. I'm almost sure that he wakes up in the morning, looks in the mirror, and says yeah "I'm Sting bitch bow before me!"
Sorry, but there is nothing I say about that. I do not know the singer Sting personally. My judgement about his modesty is thoroughly based upon what he sings and how he does it, what he says and his public behaviour. I repeat: I do admire him as human being and as an artist. That is not forbidden, is it?
@Tullius It's not forbidden at all. But you must understand that celebrity personalities are handcrafted by publicists to make as much money as possible. A celebrity's public persona almost never is the same as who they actually are.
I think he's done an interesting interpretation of Dowland, who in fact was of Irish descent. Hence the need to curry favour with the protestant establishment of his time.
Good example of what I like best about Sting. Openminded, always trying out something new, merging and blending styles and interpretations. He is never boring and I actually do like his husky, lazy voice a lot. He's very special. He opens doors for his audience. Just be openminded, too, listen and enjoy.
Don't be meanthat is not nice, be fair. He is not a trained early music interpreter. Its nice to see someone outside our field taking interest in what we do.
It's not what is authentic but as he said, he's not trying to be anything but himself...and in interviews he's very humble about the talent and skill of authentic early music singers. He did his research about Dowland...he's not like Brightman who throws opera songs she can't sing into pop albums at random.
He's actually handling the Renaissance style of singing very well - absolutely no vibrato, white, clear tones, reserved dynamics, etc. His "husky" timbre reminds me of John Potter's.
The fact that he can play archlute simultaneously is pretty awesome.
oh poor sting, i respect him for branching out, and this CD was instrumentally divine, but he should keep away from the renaissance period and stick with the police.
I deeply respect lute players!

I do admire Sting's sincere modesty. And, of course, I do like almost everything he sings!

Very impressive! The lute-player's assessment is correct; Sting does have the right voice for these madrigals.

it's not really german at all...weird
it would be right if it were "Was läuft"
which means:
"What's on (tv/radiowhatever)?" because a show on tv "runs" (=laufen) "Es läuft im Radio"
Of course, since this show is from switzerland, it could be a dialect-thing without the Umlauf ä.

I'm still very new to German. Dose of that show mean "What's up" or "What air"?
