Wasn't that because sometimes a runner will false start in response to someone else false-starting first? This is especially when they are in adjoining lanes. However, in this instance, the lanes were apart and the false starts were so close that they were independant of each other - not one responding to the other. So, if they are independant false starts then both should be disqualified. The lack of communication & time it took to disqualify her was awful, but she *did* false start.
The officials said that 0.001 seconds is too close and was deemed that both runners 'dead heat' their false starts however the same officials would never dream of doing the same at the finish line.
@pizt I understand the human element of this but does this set precendence for those at the finish line who fall just short. After all there have been finishes in the pool seperated by 0.001 of a second and they did not award them as tied....
@drewe42 I just recall them saying on the radio before that they only time down to a thousandth of a second, this was before the race. On ABC radio, it may have been just after they had broken. On the radio they basically said she broke and were very surprised the English girl got disqualified. I'm not sure if the swimming timing is different.

Wasn't that because sometimes a runner will false start in response to someone else false-starting first? This is especially when they are in adjoining lanes. However, in this instance, the lanes were apart and the false starts were so close that they were independant of each other - not one responding to the other. So, if they are independant false starts then both should be disqualified. The lack of communication & time it took to disqualify her was awful, but she *did* false start.

On the radio they basically said she broke and were very surprised the English girl got disqualified. I'm not sure if the swimming timing is different.
