its a drag car not a track car lol, looking at the interior you can tell the car was made to do only one thing...if you put the interior back, swapped it out for a better tire setup (big rears are only good for drag) put stiffer suspension in it, and then the it should be a lot better

For what it's worth, the transmission in that probably wasn't specifically meant for acceleration, but rather just how old American cars came. 3 speeds were the norm since nobody really thought it important back then to have lower RPMs on the highway to save gas - much less fly way above the speed limit and most drag builds don't change that since more gears means more weight. That said, it wouldn't be a surprise to see rear gear in that with a ratio of nearly 5.00.

What's going on with this car is that the transmission is made for big V8's with a lot of torque to go as fast as possible in a straight line.. OR a so-called DRAG RACE! Fast acceleration in 1/4 mile then brake down. The car doesn't need to have a high top speed for drag racing... the body, shocks and brakes are not made for it! Most old american cars have 3 gears + 1 overdrive and a quite low top speed. And that's how it is!

It has been geard for quarter mile. If it was geared for top speed it would be close to 200mph maybe more, but acceleration would be less strong.
