The only sad thing is that SO many people dislike Bush that Republicans will be lucky to win. I think Bush is a good president but his war tactics and issues with Iraq arent the greatest at all. Then again you cant just yank the troops out either like the Dems want to do, that'd be a mistake. (Iran)
The Federal Reserve Bank (and all banks currently involved in defining public policy) must go first, then issue federal government money that is 100% backed (gold, silver, etc.). Then remove the I.R.S. from existence.
you know and I know, Capitalism does not flourish by making concessions. Thus the idea that prices will go down is simply not true. Not to mention the impact it will have on inflation. What you might seriously consider is: Taxing the heck out of all goods, raw materials and services provided to and by american companies that are manufactured, created, distributed and/or provided outside U.S. territories and consumed/used etc. inside U.S. territories.
Check out Aaron Russo's documentary "Freedom to Fascism". The taxes that we currently pay are unconstitutional and as the work gets out the politicians are looking for a way to replace the unconstitutional law with one that is constitutional. More than 68 million Americans do not file income taxes and are not force to pay them by the IRS. Who are those 68 million people not paying taxes? This is the problem Mr. Huckabee is trying to fix. Watch the documentary and find out for yourself.
What a great concept! No more income taxwes! No more IRS! Take home your entire paycheck! Can we make this happen? Support Gov. Huckabee in his bid to reform the US Tax Code entirely!
FREEDOM How about no tax on wages period. then we would be free again. 1/2 my life I work for my government's I want and deserves that 1/2 of my life back. Congress stole that sovereignty from my grandfather and his descendants (me)in 1913 and goddammit I want it back!
To the people who are arguing the 16th amendment...that is pointless....not only was that amendment NOT properly ratified, it didn't give the government any new taxing authority. The IRS and the federal reserve are complete SHAMS...and if we rid ourselves of them, there are already instruments in place to fund the legitimate aspects of our Constitutional REPUBLIC. (Please STOP saying "democracy") I agree with previous postings, please watch AMERICA: FREEDOM TO FACISM!
know you want to abolish income tax; But this Fairtax brings up the realistic fears of a future with both a Nation Tax and an Income Tax. You can't promise us that won't happen.
Ron Paul wannabe. All he wants to do is change the way taxes are collected. Sure it would be more convenient...but they will still get whatever they need to sustain all the unconstitutional progams. Ron Paul wants to do away with unconstitutional programs and agencies reducing the total taxes needed to run the government.
If you are doing away with the irs tax code, you also need to end the Federal Reserve system and return the printing of money to the US Treasury and have american currency that is actually backed by something (silver). We need a gaurantee that the dollar will remain strong against foriegn currency, and we STOP giving half our paychecks to pay the interest the Federal reserve charges our government for the printing of money. Kennedy 11110. nuff said.
I think you ought to look at the U.S. Constitution. In that document you will find all of the legitimate forms of taxation the founding fathers intended the federal government to use, and no others. Oh, and by the way, SUPPORT RON PAUL for PRESIDENT!
I think the only taxes should be those on the profits of businesses.
Higher taxes should be imposed the larger the scale of the business and the level of pollutions, etc, when the government requires additional resources to deal with.
The appropriation of the taxes should be 100% transparent with all the money being tracked and the information available freely online.
1. Same amount overall more efficiently collected thus the feds get more. Do you actually trust that congress will cut its own take? The tax should be low enough to force the feds to cut programs and agencies and insure they do not bring them back.
Smull, 1)same 2)it depends, in some ways more regressive, in some ways more progressive 3) this question shows ignorance of what the fairtax actually does. I recommend looking it up on wikipedia or google.
The FairTax would collect more revenue in actuality than the current system because of the huge economic stimulus that it would provide. This economic stimulus isn't accounted for in the scoring of the bill that was done to satisfy congressional rules because that scoring is done on a static, rather than a dynamic basis.
The FairTax is revenue positive if scored dynamically, but revenue neutral if scored statically.
1) Americans for Fair Taxation has spent $23 million dollars in economic research. Economists concluded that at a 23% rate, the Fair Tax would be revenue neutral.
2) The Fair Tax would progressive only in that you are taxed on what YOU choose to spend.
3) No. One of the benefits to the Fair Tax is that it completely eliminates the IRS. This drastically reduces both the time and money that it takes for corporations and individuals to comply with the current tax code. Having both systems would increase the complications even further.
1. The Fair Tax will collect the same. The rate was developed by Harvard Prof and Economics Dept Chair Dr. Dale Jorgenson 1996 and was re-confirmed in a study by by Bachman, Houghton, Kotlikoff, Sanchez-Penalver and Tureck, Beacon Hill Institute 2006.
2. The tax pre-bates everyone up to the poverty level. The relative beneficial impact on the poor is greater.
3. We want to eliminate the IRS or else politicians will incrementally bring back the present system. ~Jim
It is revenue neutral, which means it collects the same amount of money as the current system.
More progressive, it untaxes the poor by removing taxes up to the poverty level (a check is sent to every citizen each month, which is also covered by the fairtax)
you can check it out for yourself, the income tax takes 33 percent of what you earn (on average paychecks....) the fairtax takes 23 percent of what is spent.
The FairTax as intended to be revenue neutral, so it should collect the same amount.
The FairTax is progressive depending on spending habits. It offers a "prebate" to return sales and service taxes on "essentials" (a household's spending up to poverty level.) Also, no tax would be paid on used goods.
You could not have an option where you paid income and other taxes instead of the fair-tax, as it is a tax collected by merchants and service providers.
the federal treasury is just named just that... protest was made in the past to make people realize we giving not the goverent taxes but he who controls our government since our government seems okay with such people to collect from us.. state tax is the one thats valid..lets say we have 500,000,000 people paying taxes.. imagine 1 penny from everyone is that.. now imagine with the taxes you pay.. state tax alone can run the country. think about that..
I like the fair tax. What I would like even more would be the rich paying their fair fucking share. Sure, the right refers to this as "class warfare". Thats just another use of "newspeak". Fact is, the income tax was originally on the wealthy who have the resouces (accountants, lawyers) to deal with it. leave the rest of us the fuck alone.
In 2006 the top 20% of income earners paid 72% of the total income taxes collected by the Fed Gov't and their avg. tax rate was 24.4%. By contrast, the bottom 60% of income earners paid only 10.7% of the total taxes and their average tax rate was 8.4%. Sounds like you got what you wanted but you still aren't happy about it. My guess is that you're in the 8.4% bracket, vote for Dems, and resent successful people.
The bottom 50% of income earners in this country earn about 13.9% of all income. They pay only 3.6% of the income taxes.
The top 5% of income earners in the U.S. earn 31% of all income. The top 5% of all income earners are paying 54.1% of all income taxes.
The top 1% of income earners in the U.S. in 2005 earned 16.5% of all income. The top 1% of income earners, while earning 16.5% of the total income, are paying 33.7% of all income taxes. Fair share indeed...
You owe your share, too, grumpydoood. When you go to a restaurant and have a meal, do you look around for some "rich" person to pick up your check? Why then should't you pay your portion of our national defense, costs of roads, the postal service, etc? Of course, if everyone paid for what they actually used the poor would pay a lot more taxes because right now the rich pay far more than the services they use cost.
So far, of the people I have talked to about the FairTax , the only people who hate it are career politicians, lobbyists, tax lawyers, tax accountants, the non working rich, IRS agents, and illegal aliens. Only those who have something to lose from the removal of the income tax hate it.
The top 0.1% of taxpayers by income pay 17.4% of all federal taxes (earning 9.1% of the income), the top 1% pay 36.9% (earning 19%), the top 5% pay 57.1% (earning 33.4%), and the bottom 50% pay 3.3% (earning 13.4%)
Didn't your Mom ever tell you not to worry about what somebody else has and to just take care of yourself? By the way, a fair sales tax will cost the "Rich" more with NO LOOPHOLES. They will pay the Sales Tax on all their luxury items, it might also be possible to not tax food and clothes like we do with the NJ sales tax.
If only the rich were taxed, they would simply raise prices. Everyone would still be taxed, in effect. Stop spending and you won't need to tax as much.
i don't know about you, but it seems the more money i make, the more the gov't takes. when i was making minimum wage i got 100% of my income tax back. now i get nothing back (and have to pay every year in the state). i don't think the rich are the ones that need to pull more of their weight around here. i think the "poor" should pitch in the same percentage everyone else does.
While we are at it, we must abolish the Federal Reserve which is not a part of our government. It is a group of extremely powerful bankers who rob our country of it's wealth. End The FED!!!!
Yeah... overthrowing the government via violent revolution is really American! Wow, this guy is a hoot.... what I mean is "Mike Huckabee is the second coming of Jesus christ himself! I sure hope he wins the republican primary! Obama and Clinton don't stand a chance!"
It's so nice to see a wide variety of opposing views on a YouTube comment thread...
You added the word violent, which not all revoloutions need be, not to mention the American government established itself via violently expelling the British government.
"Yeah... overthrowing the government via violent revolution is really American!" -- While I didn't hear that coming from Mike and it should be reserved for the most extreme circumstances, the short answer is that yes, over throwing the government in a violent revolution is actually VERY American.
I am all for a flat tax, the current tax system is ridiculous - but do you really think both the IRS and thousands of CPA's would really go for that? They would all be out of the job
I don't think Huckabee will be the next president, but I like him a lot otherwise. He's definitely got to be picked up on someone's ticket or put into the next administration.
Good idea Mike. Taxes will be a big issue this election, especially with Democrats like John Edwards talking about raising taxes. That was a great line you used against him in the debate. I have a feeling he's going to be a recurring punchline for us, much like Howard Dean was.
It sounds good Governor. We will need some democrats to cross over and support it, however, and that's a tough job. The Income Racketeering Scoundrels are tough to stop.
I agree and went to explorehuckabee dot com and contributed. Great idea with the barber poll by the way. Anyone who agrees with the video neeeds to go to explorehuckabee dot com and sign up to support Governor Huckabee on the net, on the ground, or with a small check. After all, a contribution to his campaign is all we can do to close the IRS.
People, the truth of the matter is, we shouldn't be taxed on our Income, It is not a LAW!I challenge anyone out there to prove IT! All of our Income taxes goes into the pockets of the big bankers. We are taxed on everthing else, the Federal Reserve and the irs should be decommisioned. Lets get our country BACK!SAVE YOUR PENNIES EVERYONE,the US dollar is worth 4 cents Today. I BEG you to educate yourselfs, checkout this video with an open MIND "America Freedom to Fascism" and you decide?
I think the FairTax is a phenomenal idea. However, I would not support it as it stands unless there is an addition of an estate tax on ultra-high income households- and ONLY that group. Thomas Paine and several Founding Fathers wrote extensively of the importance of taxing the super wealthy in order to prevent our great nation from becoming a tyrannical autocracy ruled by the super wealthy- much like Britain was at the time of the American Revolution.
There's no reason to have such a tax at all if you're going to get rid of the IRS. Fact is, not one dime of our income tax goes toward discretionary spending i.e., running the gov't and providing services. It goes entirely to pay the interest on the debt we have incurred from handing over our right to print and regulate money to a private corporation, the Federal Reserve. Get rid of the FED, which is an unconstitutional organization, and no such tax, income or fair, is necessary.
Will never happen. The tax code is difficult and arcane because it works better that way. The only asset the USA has is the taxes it extracts from its citizens.
If 150 million Americans believed like you--it won't happen. If 150 million Americans think it can and try to make that fact known--it will happen. So either you do not want it to happen and be part of the problem or you can join to fix it! A voluntary tax on sales is the most democratic way of tax collection. The government is supposed to work at and for our electorial hand--not us working at the hand of government with forced extraction of income taxes.
The fact is that only individuals pay taxes anyway. When you tax a business, one of three groups of people take the hit. The biggest of these are consumers, who either pay higher prices or get shoddier goods. The next group is the employees, where the rank and file are hurt the most. The last group is the owners, who in the case of Big Oil can be a union penison fund. Here, everyone is better off, even though businesses completely escape taxation and only consumers pay the tax.
Who would you recommend paying? If you only tax corporations--the individual buying their products or service will end up paying the tax still. Corporate taxes is just another cost of doing business. Those costs are figured into the price of their products. If people don't pay and corporations don't pay--then who? We the people have to sustain the government although, i believe our gov't is way too big.
The rate, on a tax-inclusive bases, i.e. cost of the good or service including tax, (which is the way we think of income taxes) is 23%. On a tax-exclusive basis (how we thinks of sales taxes) it's 30%. Before you flip out though, costs will not rise 30% because of savings. They will rise between 11% and 17%, but people will have 30% more money in their pockets because they will take home their entire paychecks.
Proposed rate is 23% on NEW goods & services. Used items are not taxed. No deductables, local taxes still apply. The Fairtax eliminates a lot of double taxation. The low end point is the poverty level. Those under the poverty level will be tax free from the monthly pre-bate given to all registered Americans. Illegal aliens will qualify. fairtax dot org has the answers
Well, I am glad you are in favor of a national sales tax, but 10% is not going to come close to raise the same funds the government needs today. The FairTax reserchers say it will be about 23%. Look at your paycheck--you are paying over 25% now in federal withholding, social security and medicare--how do you expect the government to cut back to 10%?
I agree! The FairTax will make the cost of government visible to all and that removal of the blindfold off of 300 million tax paying Americans will make them mad at what has been so well hidden from view--then the fireworks will fly and politicians held accountable and finally DO THEIR JOB! Tha FairTax is the only tax reform plan that will make this happen!
The FairTax Plan is a nonpartisan national grassroots campaign to replace the federal income tax system with a progressive national retail sales tax. It provides a "prebate" to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue replacement and, through companion legislation, repeal of the 16th Amendment.
If it was truly flat maybe I would support it but after a century of the rich paying no tax, it would only shift the tax burden to the poor. I like the revolution idea though...
The poor would be tax free under the FairTax--how does that shift the burden to the poor? A flat tax is still an income tax that the rich can afford big CPA's to find loopholes out of paying like now!!! The FairTax means all rich or otherwise will pay the same sales tax percentage! The poor will be tax free from the pre-bate given them for tax spending up to the poverty level. Let's have a Fairtax reveolution--it can be done! Join the FairTax team!
Amen! As long as the flat tax % doesn't go up every year. Also what about getting rid of all the sales taxes, and hidden taxes we pay everytime we buy something or that is attached to a service (like phones, cable bills etc.)
Nothing makes you look as out-of-touch as opening your video with "Hello, YouTube!" It looks scripted and insincere because it is.
He wants my input about the FairTax? How about this question: You're a Republican, yet you advocate the FairTax welfare check. Are you sure you're running for the right party? Ron Paul wants to get rid of the IRS and replace it with NOTHING.
I am a local contact for Americans for Fair Taxation in TN. It would take me a long time to explain the benefits of the FairTax, but you could visit my website at ustaxreplacementnow dot com or fairtax dot org to find out more. I sincerely hope this information helps; if you need more information or would like to speak personally with someone about the FairTax I will make myself available for you.
Yes...fairtax dot org has all the answers as well as the Fairtax book and the 77 page Bill HR25. I found out about it this way---why can't you? Get up off your apathetic behind and research it! That is what is so wrong with most Americans today...They won't take the time to find out for themselves...the attitude is "give me the answers" So apethetic!
Mike Huckabee is far and away the best candidate for President from either party. His character, experience and insight indicate a providential leader promising to all. Support the I like Mike campaign in every way!
It does do away with income and payroll taxes, among all others. The only tax is on consumption, and only on new items. Prior to the 16th Amendment, American citizens paid their taxes through consumption. Our Founding Fathers believed taxing income was immoral.
"This doesn't really get rid of income tax we would still be taxed, just in a different way."
Indeed it does get rid of the income tax, payroll taxes, estate and gift taxes, as well as capital gains taxes. It replaces them all with a single rate sales tax on new goods purchased for consumption.
What? The Fairtax would replace the income tax. We would have to have the 16th amendment repealed to assure that income taxation does not return. It is a different way--it becomes voluntary instead of forced and it becomes visible to everyone and no longer hidden in the multitude of current ways.
Actually, it reduces the taxes on lower income families who purchase less. Wealthier families that consume more will incur higher taxes. As well, there will be options to aid the lower income brackets, so as to not be affected by taxes, period.
So this DOES cut income taxes, and helps eliminate a source of billions in federal budget... all in all, great idea!
For everyone disallusioned with Rudy McRomney, Huckabee is a breath of fresh air. I seriously hope he rises in the polls and gains some more traction because the current Big Three contenders for the Republican nomination are doing nothing but raising voter anxieties for most everyone except devoted Democrats.
the "fair tax" or point of sale tax(assumption) would completely reform government and is used in many other countries, workingly. I don't think you should get rid of capital gains tax or corporate welfare aka tax deductions because that income is supposed to go directly to the military.
Simple question Mr. Huckabee, If the people pay less in taxes, what services will have to be cut?
One reason taxes are so confusing and, ultimately, inefficient, is that politicians have promised far more in reductions than they are willing to make up for by cutting services.
It's simple, before you start talking about reducing taxes, talk about how you would cut spending.
It will only reduce taxes for all because the elimination of the compliance costs, the cost of the IRS and all Americans will be paying their fair share including the 20 million illegal aliens, criminals that avoid paying taxes on their "true" earnings and the 20 plus million foriegn tourists that all curently do not contribute. IE: today 4 out of 10 pay taxes--costing those 3 far more. The Fairtax: 10 out of 10 pay and all pay less when all are paying in.
The FairTax is revenue neutral. No programs are cut, everything receives the same funding it does today. Much of the savings comes by making it a much more efficient system of tax collection. Plus, it eliminates the hidden taxes we all pay. Corps don't pay income tax...they just pass on the bill in the price of their product!
I like paying less. (And by the way, I also like the idea that people richer than me pay less too, as long as the programs I support are still paid for.)
BUT without details, without knowing if programs might be cut, etc, how can we decide from this video alone if we like it? Everybody supports "fair", but "fair" is an easy word to say. If you call it the "Tax system for the children an puppies", it will get votes, but not necessarily mine until I know what it is.
He isn't just talking about being "fair", he is refering to HR25, the "FairTax" bill before Congress that already has 60 cosponsors. Please look it up, I apparently can't post the link here. Do a search for Americans for Fair Taxation and that should bring you to the page. Cheers!
Hmm I don't mean to be disruptive, but since I am not American, can someone supply a link to a introduction of this? I always like to add opinions.. And this country recently had some tax system issues also..
Fairtax is a great idea that will end up creating more revenue for the government in the long run. You control how much tax you pay. Used goods bought pay NO tax. I urge everyone to research the Fairtax and see the benefits of it.
How 'bout we get rid of the IRS and replace it with NOTHING. Cut the federal budget by a third instead of raising the price of everything I buy by a third. All in all, I agree that it's a good idea to get rid of the IRS. But we need to modify the 16th amendment to make sure it doesn't come back.
The Fairtax sounds good, but it isn't necessary. The constitution already has a "targeted" NRST - Tariffs. Tariffs favor "Made in the USA" and put the control of America's economic sovereignty back in the hands of the people. The Fairtax, on the other hand, taxes goods made in the USA at the same rate as goods made in socialist and communist countries. The people who hate tariffs are the same people who want to flood America with illegal aliens.
Who prints the US Dollar, who lends money to the US GOV.
Is there real money (value) to back up our dollar. Can international bankers issue money that is not even there . Lend made up money and still make a profit out of it with interest. Can too much made up money do damage to our economy? Lets find out. Tax should be fair.
You know who else supports the fair tax? Mike Gravel! everyone should check him out, i know hes a radical but thats exactly what this counrty needs right now.
Our present tax system is one of the reasons that people are finding it so difficult to get ahead these days. It is one of the reasons the next generation may not have a standard of living as high as this generation. The income tax is holding us back and making it more difficult than it needs to be to improve our families' standard of living. It makes it needlessly difficult for our businesses to compete in international markets. We can do better and we must.
I think there are even better ways for the Federal Government to do away with taxes.
I propose the Federal Government begins manufacturing goods, such as economically affordable cars for Americans or become a pharmaceutical supplier with affordable perscriptions.
I'd also consider (say) a "National Lottery" instead of Income Taxes. There's several alternatives to taking expenses out of our pockets.
not got a clue I,m scotish , american politics seems so wierd , a recent report here in the UK states that 50 million americans got no healthcare what,s that mean? Is america a 3rd world country & I only see 1 world. uh where,s the rest? peace n peaches
Governor Huckabee, I would like to draw your attention to Community Counts dot US, an effort to help spotlight the video replies most valued by the YT community. Throughout the week tubers can vote on the video's they'd most like to see you address. All they have to do is go to Community Counts dot US and click "Answer" or "Ignore." I hope you find it a valuable tool.
For the government to make up for a (maybe) 30% income tax loss, you would need raise the Fairtax to a minimum of 30% for all consumer goods.
I was at Kroger's last week and MILK was unusually high at $3.85 ... do the math and this nation sales tax will raise it to nearly a dollar extra just for milk.
Your $3.85 was already taxed before you spent it. What's the difference? Plus, you will recieve a prebate check every month to cover necessities. Please do more research before you judge it. Thanks
Actually, estimates put the tax as low as 17-18%, not 30% due to various administrative savings and the eliminations of loopholes, and, depending how the tax were set up, staple foods could be exempted, or else low-income people could receive rebates.
Not so, the cost of tha milk today includes a lot of hidden taxes along the line of its processing. Economists researched those hidden taxes to be about 15 to 20% which will go away with the FairTax. Because we eliminate a lot of compliance costs and the IRS and everybosy will pay their fair share--scholors have researched the FairTax to be more like 23%. So the $3,85 milk will cost about the same as now including the FairTax added in.
Not only, as xeniajack says, are you taxed on that 3.85 before you spend it now, but the 3.85 price is also due to the embedded taxes paid by the farmer, the transportation company, the grocery store, etc. When they all aren't taxed, that 3.85 is lowered by about 22% and the FairTax is added on top of that bringing it back (roughly) to it's current price! Plus you get the prebate!
I know you want to abolish income tax; But this Fairtax brings up the realistic fears of a future with both a Nation Tax and an Income Tax. You can't promise us that won't happen.
Great idea...but I believe the key to more jobs in this country is going to be through tougher immigration reform and we HAVE to do something about China. China is killing us.
China may be killing us now, and in 30 years will kill themselves like we are killing ourselves. May take longer though since Chinas government has more control over their corporations then our government has over ours. I wonder if letting in mexico was our answer to chinas cheap labor, a way to even the odds. Can't beat 'em, join 'em.
I support you Mr. Huckabee, because you support the FairTax. It is just as you said, Fair, Flat, Finite. It's also very easy to understand. Please help us pass H.R. 25, the Fair Tax Act of 2007 as written.
I think the fairtax is a great idea!! Mike Huckabee for President 2008!!

Three questions:
Do you think the Fair Tax would collect more, less, or exactly the same revenue in absolute dollars that the current system?
Do you think the Fair tax would be more progressive, more regressive, or exactly the same as the current system?
Would you be in favor of easing people's concerns about the fair tax by allowing us to calculate our tax the old way and pay which ever is less?
smull333 4 years ago
1. Same amount overall more efficiently collected thus the feds get more. Do you actually trust that congress will cut its own take? The tax should be low enough to force the feds to cut programs and agencies and insure they do not bring them back.
2. More progressive but still too high.

3) No. One of the benefits to the Fair Tax is that it completely eliminates the IRS. This drastically reduces both the time and money that it takes for corporations and individuals to comply with the current tax code. Having both systems would increase the complications even further.

2. The tax pre-bates everyone up to the poverty level. The relative beneficial impact on the poor is greater.
3. We want to eliminate the IRS or else politicians will incrementally bring back the present system. ~Jim
jbennettatty 4 years ago
It is revenue neutral, which means it collects the same amount of money as the current system.
More progressive, it untaxes the poor by removing taxes up to the poverty level (a check is sent to every citizen each month, which is also covered by the fairtax)
you can check it out for yourself, the income tax takes 33 percent of what you earn (on average paychecks....) the fairtax takes 23 percent of what is spent.

1. The FairTax, HR25, is revenue neutral. Uncle Sam gets the same amount as it does now.
2. The FairTax is progressive. It completely absolves those at or below the poverty level from ALL Federal tax liability.

I think the FairTax is a phenomenal idea. However, I would not support it as it stands unless there is an addition of an estate tax on ultra-high income households- and ONLY that group.

"I'd like to hear some ideas on how to fund government other than taxes on individuals."
It does not exist, sorry. As Chairman Greenspan said, only individuals pay taxes ultimately.
Philwill001 4 years ago
The fact is that only individuals pay taxes anyway. When you tax a business, one of three groups of people take the hit. The biggest of these are consumers, who either pay higher prices or get shoddier goods. The next group is the employees, where the rank and file are hurt the most. The last group is the owners, who in the case of Big Oil can be a union penison fund. Here, everyone is better off, even though businesses completely escape taxation and only consumers pay the tax.
jbennettatty 4 years ago
Who would you recommend paying? If you only tax corporations--the individual buying their products or service will end up paying the tax still. Corporate taxes is just another cost of doing business. Those costs are figured into the price of their products. If people don't pay and corporations don't pay--then who? We the people have to sustain the government although, i believe our gov't is way too big.

What's the proposed tax rate? Are local taxes deductable? I have a problem paying taxes on taxes. What is the low-end point where people pay no tax?
stevenewyork 4 years ago
The rate, on a tax-inclusive bases, i.e. cost of the good or service including tax, (which is the way we think of income taxes) is 23%. On a tax-exclusive basis (how we thinks of sales taxes) it's 30%. Before you flip out though, costs will not rise 30% because of savings. They will rise between 11% and 17%, but people will have 30% more money in their pockets because they will take home their entire paychecks.
jbennettatty 4 years ago
Proposed rate is 23% on NEW goods & services. Used items are not taxed. No deductables, local taxes still apply. The Fairtax eliminates a lot of double taxation. The low end point is the poverty level. Those under the poverty level will be tax free from the monthly pre-bate given to all registered Americans. Illegal aliens will qualify. fairtax dot org has the answers

For those who don't know what the FairTax is
The FairTax Plan is a nonpartisan national grassroots campaign to replace the federal income tax system with a progressive national retail sales tax. It provides a "prebate" to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue replacement and, through companion legislation, repeal of the 16th Amendment.

The poor would be tax free under the FairTax--how does that shift the burden to the poor? "This doesn't really get rid of income tax we would still be taxed, just in a different way."
Indeed it does get rid of the income tax, payroll taxes, estate and gift taxes, as well as capital gains taxes. It replaces them all with a single rate sales tax on new goods purchased for consumption.
Philwill001 4 years ago
What? The Fairtax would replace the income tax. We would have to have the 16th amendment repealed to assure that income taxation does not return. It is a different way--it becomes voluntary instead of forced and it becomes visible to everyone and no longer hidden in the multitude of current ways.
FairTaxman 4 years ago 2
Actually, it reduces the taxes on lower income families who purchase less. Wealthier families that consume more will incur higher taxes. As well, there will be options to aid the lower income brackets, so as to not be affected by taxes, period.
So this DOES cut income taxes, and helps eliminate a source of billions in federal budget... all in all, great idea!

the "fair tax" or point of sale tax(assumption) would completely reform government and is used in many other countries, workingly. I don't think you should get rid of capital gains tax or corporate welfare aka tax deductions because that income is supposed to go directly to the military.
axelsenzon 4 years ago
Simple question Mr. Huckabee, If the people pay less in taxes, what services will have to be cut?
One reason taxes are so confusing and, ultimately, inefficient, is that politicians have promised far more in reductions than they are willing to make up for by cutting services.
It's simple, before you start talking about reducing taxes, talk about how you would cut spending.
Majorbristols 4 years ago
It will only reduce taxes for all because the elimination of the compliance costs, the cost of the IRS and all Americans will be paying their fair share including the 20 million illegal aliens, criminals that avoid paying taxes on their "true" earnings and the 20 plus million foriegn tourists that all curently do not contribute. IE: today 4 out of 10 pay taxes--costing those 3 far more. The Fairtax: 10 out of 10 pay and all pay less when all are paying in.
FairTaxman 4 years ago 5
The FairTax is revenue neutral. No programs are cut, everything receives the same funding it does today. Much of the savings comes by making it a much more efficient system of tax collection. Plus, it eliminates the hidden taxes we all pay. Corps don't pay income tax...they just pass on the bill in the price of their product!

Yeah geez, a tax that only really affects rich people is really stopping poor people from getting social mobility...

There's also the percentages to consider.
For the government to make up for a (maybe) 30% income tax loss, you would need raise the Fairtax to a minimum of 30% for all consumer goods.
I was at Kroger's last week and MILK was unusually high at $3.85 ... do the math and this nation sales tax will raise it to nearly a dollar extra just for milk.
j0eg0d 4 years ago
Your $3.85 was already taxed before you spent it. What's the difference? Plus, you will recieve a prebate check every month to cover necessities. Please do more research before you judge it. Thanks
xeniajack 4 years ago
Actually, estimates put the tax as low as 17-18%, not 30% due to various administrative savings and the eliminations of loopholes, and, depending how the tax were set up, staple foods could be exempted, or else low-income people could receive rebates.
buzzardist 4 years ago
Not so, the cost of tha milk today includes a lot of hidden taxes along the line of its processing. Economists researched those hidden taxes to be about 15 to 20% which will go away with the FairTax. Because we eliminate a lot of compliance costs and the IRS and everybosy will pay their fair share--scholors have researched the FairTax to be more like 23%. So the $3,85 milk will cost about the same as now including the FairTax added in.
FairTaxman 4 years ago
Not only, as xeniajack says, are you taxed on that 3.85 before you spend it now, but the 3.85 price is also due to the embedded taxes paid by the farmer, the transportation company, the grocery store, etc. When they all aren't taxed, that 3.85 is lowered by about 22% and the FairTax is added on top of that bringing it back (roughly) to it's current price! Plus you get the prebate!

I know you want to abolish income tax; But this Fairtax brings up the realistic fears of a future with both a Nation Tax and an Income Tax. You can't promise us that won't happen.

You are exactly right, this is the standard pattern.

Great idea...but I believe the key to more jobs in this country is going to be through tougher immigration reform and we HAVE to do something about China. China is killing us.
witt1611 4 years ago
China may be killing us now, and in 30 years will kill themselves like we are killing ourselves. May take longer though since Chinas government has more control over their corporations then our government has over ours. I wonder if letting in mexico was our answer to chinas cheap labor, a way to even the odds. Can't beat 'em, join 'em.

I support you Mr. Huckabee, because you support the FairTax. It is just as you said, Fair, Flat, Finite. It's also very easy to understand. Please help us pass H.R. 25, the Fair Tax Act of 2007 as written.
echopulse 4 years ago
Yes, very easy to understand. Or is that simple-minded. The writer Anatole France had a nice comment on such easy-to-understand "equality":
"The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread."
