Lighten up, skeptics--as if YOU really know what the archaeopteryx was or wasn't. There's something going on here--it's called ART---try it sometime!!!
"Odd never seen a bird with teeth and arms coming from its wings." It has been agreed upon for many years that archaeopteryx was just an extinct type of bird. So OF COURSE modern birds wouldn't look like it, because it is a different (and extinct) type of bird.
No one ever said Archaeopetryx was a bird. No scientist with any credibility would call it such. However, it is an evolutionary precursor to modern birds.
Why do you call it a bird when there are so many factors that do not line up with it. Check its bone structure. This species is exaclty what to expect if evolution is true.
Well, scientist now know that Archaeopteryx was just an extinct species of bird. And if you are convinced it is a missing link: It isn't a missing link (or transitional form) because it doesn't have parts that are partially evolved (because a missing link should be ON ITS WAY to getting the newest mutation). It shows up in the fossil record fully formed.
Archaeopteryx is unlike any extant bird. I'm not sure what you mean in your coment, but Archaeopteryx has a multitide of both avian and theropod characters and it IS a transitional fossil because of that. I don't know why people say there are no transitional fossils. Every living thing is evolving (a differing rates) at this very moment including humans, so technically everything is transitional. Why does the human body have so many vestigal features?
Archaeopteryx is missing a few things like fully converged handbones and a pygostyle sacrum to be a full bird. Instead it his a hand more like a reptilian and a long bony tail just like reptilians do. So it isn't 'just' an extinct species of birds.
Yeeah but you can't say Archaeopteryx was a full bird because it had: Unfused handbones, no pygostyle tail, teeth, a hooked claw on both feet. These are features shared with dromeaosaurid dinosaurs that is why it is a dinosaur taking the steps to becoming bird. It isn't a bird YET.
I didn't catch that. However, I am familiar with one pop culture dinosaur known for his desire (and inability) to fly, namely "Gon". Squetch is cool that way! Look for the badgerbadgerbadger reference in the Rhino song ;-)
This is creationist bias. The archeopteryx was not a dinosaur. It was a transitional specie between dinosaur and avians. And it could fly, just not well.
if you go to any website that classifies species eg. wikipedia, you will see that it is classified as Aves, which is a bird. But it was closer to dinosaurs than modern birds.
By that argument, all dinosaurs are birds. Modern classifications, however, are pushing to no distinction between birds and dinosaurs. Birds ARE dinosaurs.
possibly - although I'm not sure how easy they would be to climb? And whether the energy cost of climbing them would be justified by their diet (I mean it's similar to the pouncing pro-avis theory in that way). I guess we'll never know :D I'm quite fond of the theory that said Archaeopteryx used its wings as giant fly-catching nets. Absolutely genius xD

Those are not the right pterosaurs for that time period. Otherwise, I love it. Nice job popping a reference to the group "Maniraptoria."

Eaglepointrocks 3 years ago 49
well, it was fully bird. But the most primitive bird ever discovered.
garrywarney 3 years ago
No, it was not fully bird, and here a a few examples why:
The ankle is intermediate in structure between theropods and primitive birds.
Free trunk vertebra, while modern birds have fused vertebra.
The spine attaches to the rear of the skull, while with birds it attaches from the bottom
The brain cavity is more similar in shape to that of modern lizards then modern birds.
Free vertebra to the tip of the tail, while modern birds have few fused vertebra.
Eaglepointrocks 3 years ago
if you go to any website that classifies species eg. wikipedia, you will see that it is classified as Aves, which is a bird. But it was closer to dinosaurs than modern birds.
garrywarney 3 years ago
Wow, I never though someone would actually cite wikipedia as a reference.
I wasn't arguing it's classification, I was arguing that is wasn't fully bird, and I listed specific anatomical details as to why.
Eaglepointrocks 3 years ago
oh yes, archaeopteryx is a missing link, only a fool denies that.

By that argument, all dinosaurs are birds. Modern classifications, however, are pushing to no distinction between birds and dinosaurs. Birds ARE dinosaurs.

If you're going to pigeonhole (heh) it, it's more like a dinosaur. If not for the feathers, it would basically be Generic Small Theropod #468...
Aozame 3 years ago 3
Well small theropods had feathers. Like Sinosauropteryx

Funnily enough, archaeopteryx existed in a time where there were no trees to perch upon...
