For those who are upset and disliking the video, I think the point is kind of like, even though he tries to change things for the better, its like, if you change the past, it only ends up bad. Sort of like, the butterfly effect, changing things only makes them worse, not better. If he didn't put the flower there, she wouldn't have.... done what she did.

@nondescriptperson9 well it could actually mean the opposite, he could have actually meant to do that.. the song basically meant that he was glad that the girl was doing well and happy that she was while hinting that there was some resentment for her because she didnt feel the same way he did for her and even moved on while he was still in pain over her.
