  • I cried when Eamonn did not win the Olympic medals. He was a such a really great runner and a really nice guy. He will be always a hero for me.

  • He is one of my heros, Eamonn Coughlan, a great runner and Irish.

  • Coughlan would have done better if outdoor tracks were made of wood.

  • Will I ever get tired of watching this? Probably not.

The commentary of this race on Irish TV by Tony O'Donoghue was brilliant. At the bell: "There is one lap to go and it is becoming increasingly difficult to remain cool and objective about the outcome of this race". (It's on Google video if you search for "Eamonn Coghlan Winner 5000 Metres", haven't seen it on YouTube)

  • eamonn coughlan summer of '76 how we sat in that german pub in the small village of herongen willing him to take gold but alas and alack, never mind, seven years later my daughter is born on the 14th. august and eamonn takes gold the same day!

  • My middle namesake doing his thang.

  • I met him before and he's a really awesome person

  • This Eamon loves this Eamonn!

  • your the fuck

  • He was an inspiration to me on many a long, hot and sweaty run here in Fort Worth.

  • An absolute inspiration. Favourite Irish athlete.

  • Coghlan is my cousin in law !

  • For all those young runners out there, DON'T let a 3:49 miles sit on your butt in a 5K race...he'll sprint past you every time!

  • @jjodonne3 . Ireland had big screens in 1983?

  • I started watching him in76, saw him in Loughrea if rememory's right, defo saw Mc daid, Foster and others, watching him became to much because he never wucking fun, except indoors. That day when he ran away with it will always be with me. In 76 I went to the pub to watch him, 11:15 pm , I was never out so late before, 4th , that was so disappointing for a thirteen year old. My nephew came third to his two sons in mayo about five years ago.

  • Great to see this again. Was in Croke park (Donegal v Galway) when the result was flashed on the big screen. Best cheer of the day.

  • It was nice to see Coghlan finally win the big one. He knew he should have won the '76 Olympic 1500. He knew he should have won the '80 Olympic 5k (even with Yifter's matching finishing speed - he had the angle but let Yifter slip through on the inside on the critical backstretch.)

Those '83 World Championships in Helsinki were epic - I still remember more of the great races from those games than from subsequent Olympics.

  • well done eamon, you done us proud!

  • Great to see that again. Watched on US television and was thrilled to see Coghlan finally triumph outdoors. Thanks for posting!
