This was the first Derby i went to..i was only 18..i remember putting on £10 at 10-1 and cheering him on from the Longsdale Enclosure inside the last furlong..Its a pity he flopped in The Arc but he was a great Horse and a picture of him stands in my house to this day..Alan Munro was always confident of his chances..I went to the Derby three more times but when it got moved to Saturday i stopped going there was something special about a Wednesday Afternoon Derby.
Generous beat Marju 1st St.James's Palace, Hector Protector 1st Prix Jacque le Marois,Environment Friend 1st The Eclipse,Toulon won the Leger .Personally I think hejust got better as the summer went on.If you look at the facts nowt in this race except Toulon stayed further than 1m2f.So inhind sight he had every right to murder them over 1m4f.He went onto murder Suave Dancer in the Irish Derby who subqnt won Irish Chmp Stks+The Arc.While Generous won the KG alas The Arc was a race to far for him.
I always rated Marju quite highly. Won the St James Palace beating Second Set and 2nd in the Derby. A pity that injuries affected him in both the Guineas and the Eclipse in which he ran poorly in both!! Thanks for posting, hadn't seen this Derby for ages!
He ran a heck of a race in this considering the distance. But I think Generous was an exceptional 1M 4F horse. He murdered the French Derby winner in the Irish Derby as well.
I remember watching this outstanding horse win the derby in a hospital waiting room. In fact he really triggered a deep interest in horse racing and Ive been hooked ever since. These 3 great wins in the summer of '91 are truely impressive and I havent seen many, if any, better middle distance horses since either.
I sat my last gcse exam on the morning of 5th june 1991, and then casually strolled home with plenty of time to spare, to watch this race.
Great to see it again especially as its a live recording ! Its a real step back in time. I tend to rate very highly, the stuff i havnt got from those early years as we had no video recorder yet.. thats when it was the most fun , when your still learning about the game. I havnt seen a better middle distance horse since. This horse really put his foot down
Since 1989 when I got into racing Generous would be in a small group of outstanding Derby winners that I've seen along with Nashwan, Sinndar, Galileo, High Chaparral & See The Stars.
speak english boy. he was a better derby winner than both of those and beat better horses without any doubt at all. its the derby that matters the most.
what eagle mountain???? aye legend that he is. well if thats the case we should just banish dancing brave to the annals of history because he never won the derby. look at sea the stars compared to when he won the derby, he looked like a bull in the arc, horses progress physically an mentally so much from the derby although i agree its the number 1 race to win over here, its not life and death
@OldRoyalAscotRaces There hasn't been an horse since Dancing Brave who as been on the same level as Sea The Stars, End of story. Mick Kinane as described him as the best he rode and the ultimate thoroughbred, And lets be fair that man as rode some brilliant brillaint horses...
@Katabatic77 But clearly not because if any of the horses You just named were better than Sea The Stars surely Timeform would have rated them an higher horse than Sea The Stars espcially if Your claiming they beat better horses? Sea The Stars beat some top 3 year olds in his 3 year old career, Aidan O'Brien rarely trains poor horses and Rip Van Winkle, Mastercraftsman, Fame And Glory are not poor horses. And STS didnt just beat Cavalryman or Youmzain did he in the Arc...
@Katabatic77 In the 2009 arc there was the double breeders cup winner 2008,2009, St Leger and King George winner Conduit, There was the Irish Derby winner Fame And Glory, Youmzain a treble runner up in the Arc which is a feat on its own. Yes this Arc wasnt as strong as Arc's in the past but the only two arcs in history that I would say had a good field of horses throughout was the 1965 and 1986 which Sea Bird and Dancing Brave both won. Montjeu, Sinndar, Sakhee, Lammtarra, Peintre Celebre...
@Katabatic77 didnt exactly beat world beaters in there career and neither did they beat world beaters in the Arc's they won. The best 3 year old You named in that list was Montjeu who I believe STS would have eat up and swallowed on the turf. Where talking about the first 3 year old to win the Guineas, Derby, Arc in one season, If he isn't as good as people make out then why is he rated on the same calibre as Dancing Brave and Shergar (140) In years to come you will realise how good a horse...
What was the piece of music for 1977?

Fantastic horse! One of the best Epsom Derby winners ever! New Approach, Authorized, and Lammtarra would've had no chance.

New Approach? Authorized? Lammtarra would have swallowed the pair of them.

Beautiful chestnut coloured horse with a flaxon mane and tail.

Reminds me appearance-wise of Kneller, who could have swept all before him the year following his Ebor victory, had he not died prematurely.

Checkout the action on Blushing Groom isnt it Nashwan in slow motion?

what about new approach

authorized was better than new approach and sea the stars

heed doon yoo, poor comment. he was a good derby winner but he wouldnt have won or went close in the guineas and wasnt an unbeatable champion 2yo

yeah fair enough..
but authorized was still a group 1 winner over 8, 10 and 12f just like sts & db..
he won a very good juddmonte international too
beat arc winner dt , & 06 + 08 winners of juddmonte, notnowcato, duke of marmalade.
best derby winner since high chaparral including sts & na.
eagle mountain, soldier of fortune, lucarno - all won group 1 middle distance races afterwards
and he pulverised them.
OldRoyalAscotRaces 2 years ago
no he wasnt...not even comparable to sea the stars
greggles1902 2 years ago
no he was better...
people have very short memories when it comes to horse racing
i'd tell you to go n watch the 2007 derby but it was taken down for copyright...
authorized was far far more impressive than sea the stars at epsom... and beat better horses... in the derby and juddmonte...
right handed tracks were his undoing.

a matter of opinion.
what did sea the stars beat?
youmzain & cavalryman.
anyway this video is about generous,
who was miles better than that horse over 12f.
as were these others
suave dancer, st jovite, balanchine, lammtarra, peintre celebre for sure,
montjeu, sinndar, sakhee, dalakhani, all better than that horse. thats my opinion and one i know most would disagree with, but who cares.
