I've loved Johnny and his music all of my life. Even before all of his comebacks. I love it when the people who made fun of Cash's music now talk about what a legend he is. I can honestly say I was "Cash" when Cash wasn't cool!
@KLUNKET I hear you. In the late 60s when I was a teenager, I wasn't cool because I dug country music and ol' Johnny was my favorite.
Nowadays, old high school friends call me to rave about a new Cash collection being released, and I have to laugh up my sleeve. But a few of them actually think that I had the gift of foresight forty-odd years ago.
@moproducer -I remember one case in particular from my high school days.We had a music appreciation class and the teacher gave us an assignment to bring our favorite record to school. We were going to spend the day before holiday vacation listening to everyones favorite songs.I brought my Johnny Cash "The Blue Train" Album.I was laughed right out of the classroom, and the teacher didn't defend me. One of the people who laughed at me then now has made it his lifes mission to collect Cash's music!
I grew up listening to Johnny Cash. My mother was a big fan so i had to listen, but i liked his music. I was just a kid back then. As i aged i became a fan of 70's rock, still am. But i still like listening to good ole Johnny. R.I.P.
anyone know wher i could down load this version, i used to have the original recors Ring Of Fire, with this version, but lost it years ago from my dog chewing it up!!
@thomascow1 This version was first released in 1964 on "I Walk The Line" (Columbia). A much different recording (with no dobro) was released in 1958 on "The Fabulous Johnny Cash" (Columbia) and the same recording re-released on "Ring of Fire" (Columbia, 1963). This was Norman Blake's first of many recordings with Cash, and one of his earliest appearances ever on dobro.
i entered high school in 1960. joined a record club. one of the first albums i bought had this beautiful song on it. ever since then hardly a day goes by that i do not hear this song at least once. i adopted my daughter 13 years ago, at birth. i sang this song to her as an infant and she still today asks me to sing it for her.
@headredbone My daughters 14 now, I used to sing Paul McCartney's One of Those Days (a truly beautiful song). She asks me to sing it when she's sick, Daddies girl... This song is a perfect balance between a beautiful melody and the melancholy of the man in black's voice. great
Nice comment, yea Johnny was one of an exclusive and elite club of the best songwriters on the planet, and was meticulous to his death in getting the message of real true music to the generations, having said that you say Johnny cash to the youngsters today and they even say "He's cool".
This my favorite version, the dobro is great! The original album this song is on also has the best studio versions of Folsom Prison Blues, Big River, and Hey Porter. Luther really sounds great on them. Understand Your Man is also on it.
i prefer the original version by mr. cash. however thi is not too shabby at all. my little daughter is 13 now. i sang her to sleep lots of restless nights with this song. she still remembers and asks me to sing it occasionally.
This song was written by Johnny Cash and his father, Ray Cash....There was no one like Johnny Cash. More than a great performer/songwriter, etc., he was a great human.
sorry but your a little off. It wasnt ray who helped, it was roy his brother who helped write the song. your close and by the way im from mount vernon mo, what about you?
You may be correct in regard to who helped Johnny write this. However, Johnny himself said his dad helped him write it when he introduced him on his TV show.. Likewise, Johnny Cash and Ray Cash are given credit for this song in renditions of it by other artist. Even Roseanne Cash said her grandfather helped write the song. Either way, it's a super song.....I'm in Independence.
Whether or not Johnny's father helped write it, it was definitely Roy Cash, Jr. (Johnny's nephew, not his brother...he was the son of Johnny's brother Roy) who was on the credits. Roy Jr. is the father father of Kellye Cash, Miss America 1987.
Hey young man, i watched your vid, very well done, i can see your love for country music particularly guitars, i was a "cliche" drummer in my much younger years, see Handle with care, by Travelling Willburys, Legends.
Whenever somebody makes such a big compliment to me, I feel like recording twenty new videos instantly ;-) So thanks!
I just watched "Handle With Care", I wasn't aware which song it was, but I instantly recognized it. So you are the drummer in the video? That's really nice!! I
No i was'nt the drummer in that particular vid we got our wires mixed up a little, i used to play in a small band doing the local clubs in the north of England, and we were very fortunate to meet and jam with some top musicians, but again that was in my younger days, i find it very difficult to play now what with some motor racing accidents and a spot of arthritis in my hands, but music will always be the most important thing in the world, keep up the good work and all my wishes.
@gyngerd Roy Cash, Jr. went on to a career as an officer and a fighter pilot in the Air Force (no doubt inspired by Uncle Johnny's stint in the USAF as a Russia radio spy), and later commanded the US Navy Top Gun Squadron.
Roy, Jr.'s daughter, Kellye Cash, was Miss Tennessee 1986 and Miss America 1987.
@alanyoung2 Well, friend, the verifiable facts are these: Roy Cash, Jr., who was just over 17 at the time, wrote this one night with his uncle J.R. while staying at the Cash home in Memphis, late in 1957. Roy Jr. is the son of Johnny's older brother Roy, Sr.
Roy, Sr., was a field representative for Chrysler in the mid-south until retirement; Roy, Jr. was a fighter pilot in the USAF and later commanded the US Navy Top Gun squadron. His daughter Kellye was Miss Tennessee '86 & Miss America '87.
replying to my own message here but this actually makes me realise how much JC did what elvis did.. both peers (peerless!).. interpreting country music in to his own style... listen to elvis' 'fool such as i'.. and then listen to the hank snow orignial .. cash seemed to do the same with this version of his own song.. 2 versions.. both great.. both different.. blah.. i'm rambling.. anyway.. song's ACE!
i understand slipflip;but for me johnny was never about being country;he transcended that line;johnny is johnny;we love him and i love this track.thanx for posting.
Thanks tuktukskagal for sending...never heard this version before but it's Johnny and it has to be the best..just listen to that dobro...my favorite instrument...
