I am looking to buy this camera, and one reason i would purchase it is for taking pictures of riding bmx's. But it says has a slow shooting speed so would't this be suitable for this camera??
I opted for the Canon 450D. My reason being although the megapixels is higher on the Sony,it has far more noise in darker scenes when comparing images. Only had my Conon two weeks but so far it's been faultless to me,touch wood. Though I do think i need a better lens as the zoom isn't to clever on the 18-55,I'm going for the 18-200
i bought this cam 2 months ago, and at first took me a whle to get used to it, but now am loving it, its a great great cam. this review and the information he has on the webpage are really usefull also
i read the full review on your website and have a quick question regarding the coninuous shooting mode. i have this camera and after about the 9nth shot it starts hitting the buffer and crawls to about 1fps in jpeg mode. i have a ms pro duo in there instead of cf card. i noticed you used a 300x cf card and i am wondering if that is what it takes to avoid the slowdown in continuous shooting mode or if the camera slows down regardless of card speeds? sony tech support did not help with this.
i purchased an HG ms pro duo and that did not have any performance increase over the sony mark 2 ms pro i am using (with the ms pro duo cf card adapter for this camera). i am not sure why they call these new and much more expensive ms pro duo cards HG since they have the same speeds as the sony mark 2's. anyway, i did notice that there is a 450mb/s ms pro duo card and i am thinking of trying this to see. i prefer ms pro duo since my laptop cannot read cf cards and hate any more adapters.
I didn't test it with an MS Pro card, so can't really say, but yes it sounds like that might be the problem - in case you didn't see it, the part where I test the A350's continuous shooting is at the bottom of the features page in my A350 review at cameralabs . com. Feel free to ask the Sony owners on the forum if they have experienced the same thing.
Some people love their photographs to be pure. Photoshop just adjusts your images to what ever you want. You didn't really capture the image then. You just changed an image. There's a sense of pride I suppose.
gordon , just a follow-up question..in anti-shake...if im going to use a high iso,or nightshot,which performs better?in-lens or in-body .which has better picture quality,noise,general performance,etc...thank you for the advice
gordon..in anti shake..what are the pros and cons of the one built in camera (sony, pentax,)and the one in the lens(nikon,canon)....which performs better ..pls help
They perform similarly, so it depends whether you prefer to see the effect through the viewfinder (in which case you need in-lens), or whether you want it to work with every lens (in which case you want in-body).
If you only get one lens, then it should be a general purpose one like the 18-70mm. I'd stick with this and not worry about additional lenses until you know how the current one is restricting you - it might be fine for more than you think... Feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums!
I've had this camera for a couple of months, the only gripe I have with it is the size of the viewfinder and the horrible kit lenses that I got with it. £600 for the camera and 2 lenses which I will have to replace because they are so out of focus and distorted in the corners, especially with the 18-70mm.
why do you always say that, cant you just tell people if you think someone will bother 2 go 2 your page 2 see the specs your wrong, cos everyone will google it. btw if you think thiss will give you this one more page view then try advertising on google adsense
It's dead simple DXm8 - this my job and my business, and posting videos here only generates money for Youtube. I don't make anything from them at all, so it's like you going to work for no salary. The business only works if people visit the site, so if no-one bothers, then it fails and there will be no more reviews. By the way, it's not just specs at the site, it's proper full review with sample images, results and a detailed analysis. There's no point repeating the information here.
Hi DXm8, actually no website earns any money from pure visitors alone - indeed, since most bigger websites pay for bandwidth per GB, the more visitors they have, the more it costs them to host the site. Most only make money when people subsequently click ads or shop through affiliate stores. But for that, they obviously need to be on the site to start with.
I got this camera like 3 weeks ago, and just let me tell u that this thing is awesome, cristal clear pictures, the autofocus works exellent, I dont have a lot of experience about DSLRs, but this camera is great.. thanks. Doug.
sorry though i might add that i will mainly be taking pictures of sport, most likely to be football. and if you dont feel this is the camera i hope you have a good cheap one to recomend. Thanks
Like he said, this camera won't be great for capturing action sequences. You'll want a camera that can get more than 2 frames per second. Nikon and Canon are good places to start.
I want to get started in proper photography, what do you think as a first time camera? i dont want to go spending thousands and from the reviews i have read and looking at the prices i have seen this camera looks great.
do you think this camera works better for astrophotography when compared to canon 450d as it got a better tiltable live view and built in image stabilization?
Image Stabilisation won't help in astrophotography unless you're taking handheld shots of the moon or bright planets with normal exposures. The tilting screen might make it easier to compose poitning upowrads, but the LV won't help you focus on stars. See our reviews at cameralabs for more details and if you have any more Qs, feel free to have a chat on the cameralabs . com forums!
Hi, you can find out everything you need to know about Live View on the Sony Alphas by reading our full reviews of them at cameralabs . com. There's direct links to the right of the video windows.
why does every one think that megapixels is all that maters with image quality. it isint the d40 is a great camera and you can take great shots. you only need 10 or 12 mega pixels if your making large prints, which if your a beginner you wont be doing.
Tough coz Sony's features are alluring compared to Canon Xsi. 14mp, sliding LCD, real live view, battery percent, viewfinder shutter, better kit lens etc. The trouble is Sony ain't got no history as a camera maker, they just bought off a dead company and renamed the brand. And if you were to think of the future, Sony lenses are ridiculasly expensive. Checking out flickr would also tell you that Canon Xsi 450D produce better pictures. So guys you may as well forget Sony. It ain't got the thing.
honestly my first DSLR is A100 and I am now a happy owner of Canon 40D. i love the wide lens options. Sony is pretty fancy has some few neat technological innovations I still consider to buy another sony as back-up.
Nonsence, the canon kitlens is definatly the better one. And also I have to say: sony got a big history as cameramaker, and don't forget that most of the techniques are from minolta... And that is... or at least it was a big name on the market...
camera alone doesn't constitute better photo! it is the person behind the lens! most canon users are season photographers. please keep than in mind. this camera is geared towards consumers not for serious amateur and definitely not for Pro! for most photography situation this one can do the job pretty well!
I sold off my Canon Rebel Xti / 400D as picture quality was no better than my old Kodak Dx7590. The only benifit i found was a powerful flash that gave good results at night.
Now no one can deny that sharpness wise Nikon is the king unless one goes for the Canon full sensor 24mp 1Ds MarkIII. But than i can't afford either becouse of high price and non existance of Nikon delership where i stay.
The two models that my local stores could get me are Canon Esi or Sony Alpha 350. Its a tough choice.

OMFG! - I am suprised of that! I didn't even know someone had found out the mega-pixels of the human eye! If only you could take images with your eye, at 81 mega-pixels...
I'm struggling to decide to get one of these (with the additional 70-300mm) or a Nikon D80 (with the 18-200mm VR). Various reviews show the Sony to be quite noisy when it goes to iso400 and above. As I take a lot of pictures of fast moving people in poorly lit sports halls (often from quite a distance) is this likely to be an issue? Outdoors, I regularly use a CPL, so the rotating barrel on the a350 is also niggling me, although as all my filters are 55mm, I wouldn't have to replace any.
I probably will in future, but I bought these as a beginner (and venturing outside the comfort zone of Auto mode, into the scary world of Aperture Priority) and it made no sense to pay more for a bigger filter. I have some stepping rings, and I find using them to be a real ball-ache, to be honest.
Hi surfdigby, a lot depends on wehther you want the live view and tilting screen of the sony, neither of which are on the D80. We've compared the D80 against the A350 in our verdict page of our A350 review at the cameralabs website, but I'd also recommend picking up both in person to see which feels best to you...
Excellent Review on the Sony A350 sadly the screen does not flap out completely like Olympus E3. By the way Gordon When you were going to review the new Canon 450D Can't wait to see your review soon
I'm not a big fan of the flip out screens. It gets hooked up with stuff in your bag, dirt gets in it. Also its a very weak and potential danger for it to break.

Yes, I would definately go for the Canon Xsi or 450D given a choice between the Sony n former.
Canon 450 is not only better for now but your future lens and equipment upgrades too price wise.
And, as far as end result is concerned, the 450 will give you far superior results anytime.
You can bet your life on Canon but Sony is a shaky thing.

I'm not a big fan of the flip out screens. It gets hooked up with stuff in your bag, dirt gets in it. Also its a very weak and potential danger for it to break.
