Guys - this whole discussion of tune is the very worst kind of musical pedantry that misses the entire point. It sounds in tune to me, but who the hell gives a damn. The power, the musicality, the depth of feeling, the pure emotion and joy of being a human being.
This is what it's all about isn't it? And it's why Mr Elling is peerless.
I, like many of you, am blown away at this musical theater lover's appalling view of Kurt's talents. I just saw him live on Thursday, for the 4th time... he is amazing. I am a vocalist and also a pianist, and perhaps this person simply is not familiar with the use of the entire chromatic scale verses the major scale. He is never off. I have even seen him go off by himself for several minutes of improvisation and still be right in tune when the band comes back in.
How anyone could listen to Elling's final note on "Lush LIfe" and even moot the possibility that he could ever be off key is utterly beyond me. I have just been to his Nov 2 Sydney concert and the hairs are still standing on the back of my neck. His virtuosic grasp of pitch and nuance and harmonic resolution is virtually unparalleled amongst jazz vocalists living today.

This is not what a good singer sounds like. Listen especially at 4:25 when he's by himself. He's so off-key, you can't even tell what notes he's attempting to hit.
@atpal You poor little `perfect` thing....One of the features of Jazz and Blues Music is that Bending Notes and Glissando are very acceptable...so ...Man... just remember that Kurt Elling is the Top Jazz Vocalist of this era....so Relax and Enjoy ..!!
@atpal .....Please ask your Mother to give you a `Firm Whack `to the back of your head....You sound like a precocious little brat...and you are WRONG...Don`t Knock Kurt Elling on my watch....Now off you go and sit in the corner and meditate on how to be more open-minded...You will be much happier by being less critical..!!
@atpal You obviously have no jazz background or training. He knew exactly what he was doing. And no, that was not meant as an attack to you. Just as some insight. Listen to jazz more. You'll understand.
@markusstokes It doesn't have to do with you or me. He doesn't hear where the notes are. If I had a different background, that wouldn't make him hear the notes better.
@drongovids "West Side Story" is GREAT! Kurt Elling would never audition, though, because he would never be cast! NEVER! Ha, ha! Not in a hundred centuries! What I say is the TRUTH! What you say is ridiculous! Broadway singers hit pitches MUCH better than Mr. Kurt Elling! It is not close! That is a big laugh to compare a hack like Kurt Elling to talent on Broadway! Ha, ha! I will still laugh at music ignorance like that for days and days!
@drongovids Also, I did not hear the aug4 interval (as in "Maria" no?) and not a scale run either. Please do not try to compare to me. You are wrong and do not hear.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Kurt Elling! Finally got a chance to see him @ the Spoleto Festival in Charleston back in 2006. His voice is an anomaly! When I 1st heard him on jazz radio, it spoke to my soul. His voice has some of everything--jazz, soul, classical, spiritual. It transcends genre, race, and age. He's in my top 10 of favorite vocalists, hands down!!
I'm proud to say I was there that night, and Mr Elling laid it down, accompanied by Ernie Watts???? Come on now!! He left no stone unturned with Ethel String Quartet. He is a voice that will withstand the test of time and every deconstruction of artistry the music industry can invent.
Jesus what an amazing manifesto of ideas!... Kurt is a musical hero to anyone below the age of 30 who sees the current structure of the music industry and thinks to themselves.. there has to be something better out there! lol. Bravo!
I am not far short of 70 and only "discovered" KE a year or so ago. He has such a fresh approach to standards, wonderful control and is daring in his repertoire.
Dedicated To You is a great lyric sung be the BEST male jazz singer around today! He's a great Chicago singer and i'm proud to say I've listened to Kurt sing often in my home town of Chicago. Thanks for positing this. Love to hear all signs all the way thru - got to buy the CD
Singing that is just as beautiful as Dexter Gordon's playing. I would love to see him having Kenny Werner at the piano. It would bring his music to a whole different level.

@guitarpicka1 It seems like most other jazz and blues singers have good pitch. The top jazz vocalist of this era has some trouble hearing it.
