Yeah, what you are doing is going to destroy your AA batteries. The reason is that the chemical process is not reversible as in Nickel Cadmium and other rechargeable batteries, which is why they are not rechargeable... dumb ass. Also, its reversing the polarity as you do in charge-mode will actually cause the battery to become resistive and hot as the chemicals break-down. Its not because the evil Duracell battery companies are trying to rip you off.
Physics Law, The power in Watt = Current ^2 x Resistance. In any device the one that constant is the Resistance. Therefore if you work with higher voltage, you need much smaller cable for the same amount of power, and you loose smaller heat leak on the cable/transmission. That's the reason we have high voltage network to link the electricity between cities.
I've drunk battery acid and I'm still er 50 yrs later, eat lard and had yellow poo but still er, ran over by car while riding bike, jumped in front train, eat 1000+ pills, stabbed with screw driver by thuggs, bashed half to death in Army, Rifle back fired, left in arctic water for 1 hr, fell onto a saw blade, fell off a cliff.
If I had any luck it would be that I'm still here I pray to GOD, that's the secret and for my sins! Some batteries blow up in my face not good without eye's!!!!
The one's that don't charge don't chuck because you can bring them back to life with 12v car batt by tapping the batt until warm then check the volts with volt meter you need to leave batt for a few mins to cool then put in charger.
Your right 1 hr just right not to long or there leak and if they do chuck OK!
@WakkieRob1 doesnt matter how long you leave them on at C/50 = they charge very slowly and never get hot.
trickle charging, a temp monitor in my smart charger anyway, they get above 90 and it stops charging until they cool back to room temp, built a custom fan to help.
To everyone who believes everything they're told without question you are the ones who miss out on many things in life, granted not realizing that you CAN recharge alkaline batteries isn't the end of the world... but I used to have a walkman I didn't have money for new batteries I did have a battery charger but no rechargables so I popped the alkalines in the charger and plugged it in... 30 mins later voila usable batteries. (when I forget to check on them for more than 2hrs they would leak tho)
NiCd, NiMh have the same voltage 1.2V but different capacity. It takes much longer time to charge NiMh (2x capacity). Even it is 1.2 V but it has much lower inner resistant than Alkaline battery. When you use it in real life/camera,tape, mp3player,etc; the effective voltage that any devices get are the same.
@rondhol you know 5volts at 1amp is the same as 1volt at 5 amps they both eqaul 5 watts..
it takes the same ammount of time to charge any 2000mah battery at 1amp. roughly 160% has to go it to get your 2000mah.
so the voltage dictates the output of the battery yes, not the charger. funny that 1 volt at 1amp puts out more heat then 2 volts at 0.5 amp though. Got that problem right now in a Hydrogen generator.. too much heat not enough amps in... :-\
do you go to school? Chemistry lesson in 9th grade, you learn how the chemical reaction in the different battery(rechargeable/not). In the alkaline battery, the reaction is not reversible. you ----retard
sounds like he had a serious leak in there :|

@Me102288 that's fine make sure you check them now and agian even these chargers have a habbit of mischief!

@WakkieRob1 thats what the temp sensor is for, so I dont have to sit and watch the thing :-)
sorry I didnt mention I built the charger off plans, similar to one that plugs into a usb for computer charging a battery. (since usb is 5 volt)
