marr's a great guitarist but weller is twice the songwriter singer and isnt a bad guitarist himself- weller continues to be relevant(his latest album no 1 again in the uk charts) while johnny pases his time with the god awful modest mouse! Still nice to see them both on stage together!
@riotuesday the cribs are ok at best- still cant touch wellers credentials and longetivity and ability to chart through 4 decades- but what a thrill to have two legends on stage at once ! And i cant forgive marrs modest mouse decision- a truly awful band!
@salvadory The Cribs have'nt been around long enough to compare and with Paul Weller being around for 4 decades, He has had some duds released during that time. Don't get me wrong, I love Paul Wellers music ! I also love Johnny Marrs music as well. "The Queen is Dead" was the best album of the 80's and I would consider both of these artists as being most relevant during that time.
@riotuesday id take sound affects or the gift u2s war or echo and the bunnymen ocean rain over the queen is dead but thats down to personal choice- but weller was pretty bad during the mid to late 80s- in fact i think his solo years are his best next to the jam days- including most of his recent efforts whic have been great(never cared for stanley road or heavy soul)!
@salvadory Les Inrockuptibles Best 100 Albums 1986 - 1996 #1 The Queen is Dead. Greatest Album of All time by New Musical Express (NME) #2 The Queen is dead. Do I go on? I love Paul Weller, The Jam and the Style Council but " The Smiths "The Queen is Dead" would be my favorite album of the 80's!
@riotuesday the difference is weller not only was the guitarist but the lyricst arranger singer and main force behind all his songs- he has lasted four decades where marr had a 5 year stint of fame and thats about it- i happen to think Marr is great myself but to compare him to Weller is a losing game
This is rare, and, unfortunately, possible only live, because Marr is the kind of great guitar player who knows how to transform others people potential for good song into excellent hits, and he had been doing that for a long time successively for two really good authors in two bands, The Smiths and The The, and Weller is a great author who knows how to "finish" his own songs, but, anyway, it would be great if these two legends could "finish" some future Weller's songs together. :)
I saw Weller a year or two ago at the Palace (Avalon) in Los Angeles and it was fantastic. He did 3 nights there. I was at Coachella all 3 days and missed him there to see X. I met Marr when he was here with Modest Mouse. He was a kind gentleman. Johnny is a guitar/musical god.
Haha. No, no favors returned. Paul actually complained that he didn't get enough time. I'll take this though. Maybe this is why less Jam songs were performed.

It's too bad Marr wasn't on the main stage a couple of days earlier playing along side his former band mate. That would of made my life.

Fuck Johnny Marr. Weller is the man! Only two good acts at the whole thing were Weller and X. Marr is a piece of nothing.

Excellent! A Town Called Malice is one of my all time favorite songs. I only went to day one @ Coachella, Paul Weller makes me wish I'd stayed!
