@Lasagnaviking only slight similarity i can see is the intro riff to panic attack. not much else, maybe some same lyric content, like the same message. but nothing else.
For those wanting to know Peart himself identifies as a linear thinking agnostic. Geddy and Alex I believe have used the term atheist to desctibe themselves. It's not rocket science to figure out if you pay attention to lyrics and read interviews with the guys.
Quote: "For those wanting to know Peart himself identifies as a linear thinking agnostic."
Did Neil himself use that term ("linear thinking agnostic"), or is that your term? Reason I ask is that earlier in his life, it's my understanding he was an atheist (and certainly a secular humanist). In later interviews, however, he has hinted at being more of an agnostic (like you say). Again, just curious if that term is his or yours.
@Ken5244 "I'm a linear thinking agnostic, but not an atheist folks." Peart, Neil (1996). The Masked Rider: Cycling in West Africa.
I'm an atheist myself, so I'm not trying to say he's not an atheist as some weird straw man argument for theism. But yeah, based on his more recent lyrics, it seems like he's at least more anti-organized religion and pro-secularism, if not an atheist. who knows. except him. I know Geddy Lee is an atheist, and I think Alex is too. None of the guys are religious.
Interesting. I've been meaning to get The Masked Rider for years but never got around to it. If I had, I'd have recognized that quote. I've been wondering about Neil's stance for years, so thanks a mil for the info.
Re his anti-religion lyrics (of which there are many), the comments I've heard & read from him over the years tend to lean towards (justifiable IMHO) condemnation of the bad & hypocritical things that bad people do in the name of their religion.
@RushBeatles Well, I believe in God and all the "fancy" stories of the Bible. What I don't believe in is religion, to me is just an excuse to manipulate people to make some easy money, or simply force them to believe in someone's interpretation of whatever they believe the Bible refers to, then control their lives. So that being said, there is a gray area between being religious and atheist, maybe Neil is in that gray area. Besides, being religious or atheist won't change his musical genius.
@Lasagnaviking lately you r correct rush best songs are intrumentals, such as main monkey business & Mal Nar, geddy cant sing anymore so that may be by design
@PeeceSells layers of paper (exaggerations embellishments half-truths and our right lies) to get the the true deeper meaning. I think that is what Neil is getting at.
@PeeceSells I think it's not so much Religion in general but those that warp and twist it to become a weapon of persecution or war that Neil is writing about. Religion at its most basic is nothing more than a guide to civil society that runs like a well oiled machine. But the truth become like a gift as of late. You have to tear through all of the
I think this is a fantastic song but I think Geddy could have sung with a little more emotion towards the end. His singing doesn't really match the increasing ferocity of the rest of the music. It's still awesome, though.

@The66mustanggirl - couldn't have said it better myself. This is soon after Neil's "jazz drum lessons" from the guys he met at the Buddy Rich tribute.
Grace Under Pressure was my first Rush album so I'm obviously disappointed by the 'return to roots' sound. This is one of the few songs after the Hold Your Fire album that I like.
@lynchenhyman I was made a fan by Moving Pictures - the song Limelight. I really admire the musical SF story that they did with 2112...Its not the same as the "rock opera Tommy" but similar in the sense of using their music across an entire album, or much of it to tell a relatively complex fiction story. I mean, that's just still really cool in 2010. That's high quality experimentation, and this is coming from a Rush girl who grew up and has so far written 2 novels.
@Kimoram I just like the return of roots, i think their first 70's albums were the best, but their synthesizer albums are also not worst but they can't compare to albums like moving pictures & counterparts
@Kimoram Sorry if you're not liking all of it equally. That's no unusual for fans. I liked a lot of GUP, but Roll the Bones and Counterparts also each have at least one or two songs which are what my son would have called "Raw Awesome!" when he was about 12 years old. He was born in 1995
Rush really returned to a heavier, guitar oriented sound with Counter parts and Test For Echo. Snakes & Arrows was crafted by the guitar as well showing that they have moved away from Synth inspired tunes...i'm glad.
@ViciousAlienKlown~True, and that was a nice thing when I started listening to them, I heard their music about a year ago and was completely impressed by the impressive musician ship in "The Big Money" but I found a few songs I didn't like, waited listened to them again, became some of my fav "Rush songs and I don't listen to Vapor Trails much because of the horrible quality and I can risk my speakers on my laptop shitting...
@ViciousAlienKlown~Reason why is usually people think "Wow, a laptop, must sound like shit, but I used the SRS Premium controls and the HD Audio Equalizer to my will and I got a great sound (no need for $1000 dollar speaker setup here!) and I use Rush as a base for getting that great sound, it just makes the musician ship just a recognizable when I do, and the thing about Vapor Trails is that a lot like all their music, it had a meaning, perfect proof, Ghost Rider, all the more respect for that.
You clearly haven't heard some of Neil Peart's latest lyrics, then. Look up "Faithless" on 2007's "Snakes and Arrows" and one of their new 2010 singles, "BU2B." Peart is an atheist through and through, unfortunately.
@MasterODisaster100 you obviously don't the meaning of those songs, At the point of writing these songs Neil had lost his daughter and wife. Being a Christian, we get feelings like that too. We go through times of being "faithless." Just because he was hurt and going through a tough time doesn't make him an atheist!
True, but I'd be willing to bet a crapload of money that Neil Peart is not a Christian. At best, it seems he may have considered God exists, at one time. That accident was over thirteen years ago now. It's clear he went through more than a "tough time" - he's lost faith in faith entirely now.
Last I looked, objectivism has little to nothing to do with religion - it's a philosophy, largely founded by Ayn Rand. You can be either an atheist or a believer, and still identify with objectivist ideas. Also, considering that Peart's lyrical work hasn't referenced objectivism for quite some time, it's likely that he doesn't identify nearly as much with the ideology any more.
Neil said, a long time ago, that he largely moved away from the Ayn Rand's philosophy that influenced a lot of his early Rush lyrics. He said something to the effect that he still identified with the character of Howard Roarke (from Rand's book The Fountainhead), but he discarded much of the rest of Rand's belief system.
I've seen/heard a number of post-1970s interviews with him, & they bear that out. He seems more concerned with mankind as a whole than individualism now.
Actually, I'm pretty sure Neil Peart would spit his coffee at the screen if he read that. He's not that big a can of collectivism, like organised religion.
@THECLASH1994 Your spelling sucks, and if these people are true Rush fans, they'll know that Geddy Lee's real name is Gary Lee Weinrab, which is a Jewish name, and Alex Lifeson's real name is Alexander Zivojinovich, obviously a slavick name, where othodox religion is most common, and disregarding most of this comment, who cares what religion they are, their music is made to open your mind and tell a story, regardless of what religion they are.
