This is a good performance and YMSB holds their own. Dave Johnston plays some nice textures, using descending melodic and chromatic licks tastefully and keeping the banjo rolling - no easy feat. It's in tune, it's in time, and it's tasty. And it grows on you with repeated listening. I wish the fiddle had been a bit louder, but that's not Darol Anger's fault. God bless them all for playing their hearts out. There's a lot to picking a banjo, never mind critics. Mighty fine! - Tom Hanway
Younder fucking rocks! All you assholes saying that they can't pick are full of it... And quite hating on Dave! He is an amazing musician. I was fortunate enough to grow up in Nederland, CO where these guys got together and I have been listening to them since I was a child. To say that they aren't good musicians is blasphemy and they obviously have mad skills to be on stage with legends Mickey Hart and BIll Kreutzman, and covering their song!.... Thanks for the great tunes guys!!!
They are Awesome!!! In Daves defense Yonder does alot of tunes like this one that arent really suited for banjo. If you know anything about music, a banjo usually stays in one key for most of a song by re-tuning or capo. Songs that change keys a couple times or more(ie. lots of non-bluegrass tunes)make it difficult for the banjo. Dave does a great job, when he nails it he nails it.
In all fairness I think their Picker aka Dave JOhnston isnt the best banjo player around. I think he drops the ball a lot of the time when he performs live. the rest of the band however is incredible.
@boryarrum Haters hating all the time. Drop the hate man, there's no need for it. Its just corruption in your soul. Be glad these guys got on stage to perform this song. Also, I don't know about you, but he's practically CRYING by the end of this song while he's singing. Its a good song, just bob your head along and if you get confused listen to the music play. :D
@JJtheJoolzPlane yes it is an amazing song , one of my alltime favorites, i have seen it preformed in awe inspiring ways 20 years ago, THIS IS not hating , it is an overall coment that besides Anger on fiddle the general opinion of this and of what costitutes good musicainship and competent picking is to me completely bewildering. Listen to thile, rice marshall creaking tree, grisman, grant gordy, bela fleck. and tell me these guys are great pickers
@boryarrum they have played with those guys...in fact there's a recording on youtube now of these guys on stage LEADING with bela and the flecktones from november 2011....and they do pick well, the comment above about banjo being extremely difficult in songs with key changes is a understatement. hes lucky just to not throw off the whole thing
@scrumbulent nope sorry they are not. competant and way overated
try marshall, thile, flec,k meyer, rice, grisman, never mind grant gordy, Creaking tree string quartet, Ivan ROsenberg, on and and on , thse guys just won the musical lottery thats all . and hey kudos to them for doing so, but incredible, sorry no
