There is no doubt they play an integral role in Roman life, but no historian is ever going to claim that women fought alongside men to any extent that would support your statement. As far as the Roman 'sacra' was concerned it was all about the man and the male blood line. Women's status was akin to that of a slave, the head of the family held the power of life and death, the 'patriapotestas'.

You should write a series - 'Roman women on the front line'.

They were educated like men, sometimes even more, they ran businesses if there were no male relative at hand, they were able to divorce and had the right to claim property, especially if they were of noble birth. They didn't have the same rights as men but they were way more free and powerfull as say.. ancient greek women.

Their role was strictly to give birth and raise female kids. Amongst greeks, they didn't have any proper rights. Well, but close. Sure their was after the fall of Rome a certain influx of germanic people (especially Visigoths, Ostrogoths) but that influx was just about 10 percent. Surely more in the north then in the south. But even before that Northern Italy got a huge gallic element. So, i would say that modern italians are that far away from the ancient romans in a ethnically point of view. Simply because of the fact that the ancient romans were far from pure as well.
