This is hard to get, hard to understand because it's so deep, and yet, put the time in, and you have a glorious deep, immersive strategy game! That's why I kept my copy when I bought it day of release oh so many years ago!
The only thing that put me off in the game was how the planetary surfaces were flat maps. I guess you could view them as small-scale inhabited areas without an east-west link.
Otherwise it contains so many things I always wanted of a grand strategy game and more. XD
What made this game so good is that it had gameplay on many, many layers.
Your main concern was one of the great houses, and you competed initially with the other great houses politically both in the imperial government and for the favor of the church and militarily both on ground and in space.
Add to this, you had an alien race to deal with, mutant infestation, and the church to piss off by rresearching taboo technologies... truly a masterpiece.
Oh, my...this game has always, in my opinion, come so close to perfection that its lack of reaching such is as abominable as sin! And now, I hear the soundtrack? And it sounds just like what I was trying to compose in my senior thesis as a music major? This overwhelms me! Ah!!
Ahh, good old Emperor of the Fading Suns. I still lov eit. I can only imagine how awesome it would be if it was remade today. It was fun to play, but sadly severely flawed in some of the most crucial spots. The AI houses never moved their nobles from their homeworld or tried to hide their scepters. It was virtually impossible late game to successfully launch a planetary assault of another house's homeworld due to the sheer number of cities and units they built.
I have the original copy for 95. The only issue with the game is that when you reach the point where you study all the technologies and conquer majority of the planets...the computer itself has a hard time keeping up with the game play.
You have to try and buy it on ebay or Amazon, because you need the poster and the manual. The manual is only 30 odd pages, but full of info and the poster is full of unit stats and technology trees!
I wish someone did a Let's Play of this game, I suck at RTS's but I really like this one.. Only I really don't get the game that well.. :( An LP or a walkthrough would be sooo sweet!
This is a good game, except for the fact that the computers are not subject to losing troops due to starvation or any other limiting factor, so my enjoyment of the game is ruined by the fact that I can't actually play because every other faction has got about 100000000000 more troops than me. Is there a way to fix this, because neither Hyperion nor Nova seem to address it.
I have just 'discovered' this game and was wondering if anyone had info of where to get a copy i.e. does the actual disc have to be bought or can you download a full version?
Does anyone have links to good beginner tutorials for this game?
Had a copy of it on my harddrive for quite some time but finally in the mood to try it out, and the official manual seems to leave a lot to be desired.
Guys, whoever wants to play a Play By Email game of the plain EFS version 1.4 with me please message me here in youtube. :-) I just got too nostalgic I think! :)
If anyone wants to install the game, there is a torrent of it whose title says "incl. game music". I uploaded that torrent, and it runs on any windows.
If some developer were to create an awesome Space 4X that had awesome Trade, Diplomacy, Graphics and UI/Interface.... it would most likely be my favorite game ever. SINS is awesome but the management aspect is lame and there is no Planetary Combat!!!! Anyway, if you see this and you are planning to make a 4X Space game with those qualities, let me know.
@LilPunKid I remember there was an open source project that attempted to make a EFS clone. I don't what happen to it now, if any developers out there that wants to ressurect this project google > project/ad-infinitum sourceforge.
I've been hopelessly in love with this game since I played the original demo. I still play it almost daily after all these years, primarily because it was so easy to edit the game (creating new or editing existing units and building and even their movement capabilites (a tank that swims or flys, if you want)).
It's an amazing game, allot of fun. The AI is pretty terrible, i haven't played any of the more modern patches. (this game is from 1996 if i'm not mistaken) good luck trying to get the game working on a modern system though >.> It doesn't like 64 bit os's
my god the soundtrack is incredible. i honestly have not seen a game that put this much quality into music in a while.
...not to mention the fact that the gameplay looks incredible as well. a 4x game that involves space and land battles, and a serious political/diplomacy gameplay to boot? WHERE DO I GET IT??? lol, i must know...
and it looks pretty old. is there a way to get it to work on vista/windows7?
The soundtrack is one of my all time favorites, I've got it all uploaded on youtube. As for the game, I have a zip of it I can upload somewhere if you send me your e-mail in a message...I use 64-bit Vista and it works fine. It's just the zip though (25-30mb) without the music.
Also there's various copies on eBay that are floating around from time to time.
There are very few games I've played that have more depth than this game.

This looks like Civ2 but with downgraded graphics, but space battles and various improvements. I've never even heard of the game but it looks great.
