Awesome review. Especially since I've got the S90 and I'm now thinking of the XZ-1 because of that stonking lens. It is as if Olympus really watched what the others were doing, and said: "OK, we can do better by simply doing what the photographers want. We won't insult them by forgoing important stuff in favor of useless gimmicks." It is bigger than the Canon for sure, but that lens must make you forget! It's like Mustang GT and it's awesome V8 vs. the elegant, refined Mazda Miata and it's I-4.

@hazoom2009: Yeah. I had the S90, and I wanted the faster lens of the XZ-1. The S90 was nice, and the S100 is just an evolution of the S90. But the XZ-1 is nicer, at the expense of a bit of size. I almost NEVER need to use the flash on it.

@raine9518 XZ-1 wins handily, unless the 24mm wide angle is super important to you. For instance if you're in Europe and you like architecture or landscapes. I found myself missing that last 4mm of wide angle with my Canon S90. When you need 24mm, 28 just won't do. Can't back up any more to squeeze that church in, because the other buildings are jammed right up next to it!

Kai that was a dreadful review of the XZ-1! You hardly touched on any of it's features! I felt I had to add this comment for anyone sitting on the fence and may be considering the XZ-1 or a Canon S or G. The XZ-1 has many killer feature, like all the Art and SCN modes found in the PEN series plus a couple I wish my E-PL2 did have but hasn't, one of which is the awesome panoramic auto alignment of shots and stitch mode, which is like voodoo! Kai, you obviously didn't try it or you'd have shown

I think he partly used the s95 as a benchmark for this review because it was favored in an earlier review over the lx5. Although, I don't remember the LX-5 beating out the S95 in ISO performance. But with this olympus, surprisingly there is a big difference in low light performance (compared ot the s95). "They" say that if you plan to take a lot of videos...then you should go with the LX5...Good job olympus...but at that size...It looks just a little smaller than the GF2...

@damien123666 The big options are basically the Canon S95 and G12. Both have really good image quality. The S95 is small and can fit in a pocket, but only has a 28-105 zoom, the G12 is bigger and has a 28-140 lens with more external manual controls. Both are basically the same camera aside from outer body and lens, and offer RAW and all the other features that a DSLR has, although some, like manual focus, are harder to use on the compacts. (Since you have to use buttons or a wheel)

@wrbwrxmax Yep, being familiar w/ the 550D, the G12 should definitely be on the list, if the G-series form factor & weight are agreeable to you. The 5x optical zoom, great low light, high iso performance, & the familiar knobs & buttons make it easier to get where you want to be w/o more diving into menus, which a Canon dSLR user should find familiar & pleasing. Just be aware of its shutter speed limitations, the narrower wide-angle end of the zoom, & it's no AF, no optical zoom limits in video.

@damien123666 If zoom is your priority the Nikon P7000 is your best option for image quality the olympus XZ-1 and if size is your main priority the Canon s95 or s90. the Panasonic LX5 is similar to the Olympus a bit slower lens but $100 cheaper
