  • I absolutely love this show and love Maggie on it. She is a real gem

  • My favorite quotes that aren't in the video:

"Really Rosamund, there's no need to be so gleeful. You sound like Robespierre lopping off the head of Marie Antionnete."

"I used to think that Mary's beau was a mésalliance, but compared to this, he's practically a Hapsburg."

  • I love Maggie Smith and her character on Downton Abbey! Never a dull moment when she's around!

  • Cudos to Dan Stevens for keeping a straight face in the chair sailing scene :-D

  • 9 people have been in a fight with an American, and lost.

  • 'No English man would dream of dying in somebody else's house'

    HILARIOUS!!

  • This is kind of off-topic, but it appears that there is a posh american accent :D I laugh so hard when I hear it (example - New Youurrk)

  • I actually clapped when she told Mrs Crawley to "put that in [her] pipe and smoke it!" XD This series deserves all the awards for scriptwriting and more!!

  • Only Dame Maggie Smith could steal the scene with just TWO words! I laughed so hard I thought I would wet my pants!!!

  • "Put that in your pipe and smoke"... She's such a boss!

  • Yes, she does have most of the best lines...

  • I love Dowager Countess! I'm not used to seeing such clever humor in period pieces and she makes the show so entertaining.

Downton Abbey has just been introduced here in Canada and I'm hooked. I'm not sure what it is about the show I enjoy so much because the drama isn't as steep as some other series' that I watch. Maybe it's the terrific actors, the scenery and the return to old-fashioned manners and grace :) Lovely show.

  • She is simply amazing.

  • I wanted to see the telephone/torture devise!

  • Very excellent, loved all these scenes. You missed one of my absolute favorites though.

Lady Mary: "Sybil is entitled to her opinions."

Dowager Countess: "No. She isn't until she is married, then her husband will tell her what her opinions are."

  • What is a weekend?

  • Love, love love!!! Great show, great characters!

  • All great lines...but you missed the one where she says something about "You can't very well kiss the Queen's hand in June when you were arrested in May!"

  • LOL I love them all! LOL She had a lot of good ones for sure.

  • " The Dowager Countess Violet Grantham?" No, no. no!

Her family name is Violet Crawley. Her title is The Dowager Countess of Grantham, but would be called Dowager Countess Grantham (no of). The only time her given name "Violet" would be used would be in the third person, ie, "Lady Violet."

  • @RogueCrew Her family name is Crawley? Did they say that in an episode?

  • @OrangeySnicket The whole family is comprised of Crawleys, haven't you been watching? The name "Crawley" has been mentioned in every episode.

The daughters are call "Lady Edith Crawley," etc., because they aren't actually peers, and must use their family name, rather than "Grantham." That they are called "Lady" is a courtesy title only. The Dowager Countess, The Earl, and the Countess, however would all be called "Grantham."

  • @RogueCrew Lol, sorry, I am new fan and all the characters are still blurring into each other like crazy. (I thought Mrs. Hudson and O'Brien were like... one person.) Thanks for taking the time to answer a clueless newb though. :)

  • @OrangeySnicket Well, with two seasons already aired, you're a little late to the party. If you're really very new, you can watch all of season 1 on dvd, or streaming on a service like Netflix (@ $8/month for UNlimited streaming, it's a terrific value), and you can go to PBS online over the next few weeks and watch all of season 2 for free.

  • Oh, I LOVE Maggie's remarks!! Please continue to post new remarks as they come available! I believe Maggie's lines are the most anticipated and enjoyed!! Thank you.

  • "So what? I have plenty of friends I don't like." at 0:48 was one of the best lines she's ever said. I love Downton Abbey.

  • "i take that as a compliment"

"i must have said it wrong"

  • Comment removed

  • I LOVE HER XDD

But I think you forgot when she tried to hide from electricity, insulting it !!

  • 'So put that in your pipe and smoke it'

    Ahh, Freaking amazing xD

  • "what is a weekend..."

  • What an actress, one of the best characters of the show !!!! I really enjoy watching her.

  • No wonder Mr Bates wasn't called Master instead...

  • Incomparable Maggie Smith!

  • Oh man, I love Maggie Smith...she is the best actress for this character. She does it so well, I can't imagine anyone else taking this role. I look forward to seeing more of her "statements" hehe. Thanks for sharing :)

  • I expect no Englishman *would* dream of dying in someone else's house ... at least not then and not in Dowager Countess Violet's circle.

  • 'and put that in your pipe and smoke it" aaah gonna use it, yup yup;

  • "One can't go to pieces at the death of every foreigner. We'd all be in a constant state of collapse whenever we opened a newspaper." Classic. Love Maggie!

  • @Mumbz5 I missed this one -- thank you.

  • I liked the swivel chair scene best..... 'I'm a good sailor'

  • Very, very well done! :)

  • She's amazing and always have the best lines and i just love her delivery.

  • Oh she is amazing!! Definitley one of my favorite actors of all time! I'll never look at a swivel chair the same again!

  • These gems should have a Part 2 and 3 and so on - geesh, she's great isn't she? I love the other members of the household but the Dowager is priceless - definitely a breath of fresh air and wit. Thanks for the compilation. Looking forward to Part 2.

  • Following on from the Suit of Armour comment, I would also nominate the Dowager Countess telling Isobel that Molesley's rash was just an alleragy. :-)

  • I didn't like her at first, but she adds that feel of true aristocracy to the show. Wonderful!

    "What's a weekend?" LMAO

  • Suit of armor! Definitely my favorite of this one.

  • Love this. Would love season two,as well... especially the reference to disliking "greek theatre" where all the drama happens off stage..she didn't want to miss Mary and Matthew's awkward reunion with Matthew's new fiance in tow - priceless.

  • "No Englishman would *dream* of dying in someone else's house!" XD

But I think my favourite is the swivel chair!

  • "Wha.. what is a week - end?". I love that one, it's great to quote it

  • I am such a fan of this show, I made a t-shirt: "The Wonderful World of Downton." Look it up on redbubble and let me know what you think.

  • I love her character, so sarcastic.

  • Thank you so much for posting these precious "Dame Maggie Smith Moments" - don't forget "It always happens when you give these little people some power, it goes to their head like strong drink." - following request made of Major Clarkson.

  • "Is this a method of communication or a torture device?" [regarding the phone]

  • there are so many other good ones from the the Christmas special!

  • Thank GOD they included "put that in your pipe and smoke it" because I was afraid they'd forgotten it ;) Maggie Smith is an absolute GEM.

  • "No, no I'm a good sailor" Bwuahhhhahahahaha!

  • DO you need some ice for those burns?

  • "No Englishman would dream of dying in someone elses house!"

My personal favourite! I vividly remember choking on my tea as I laughed hysterically..:p

  • This is a great show and she is one of my favorite characters on the show.

  • I giggled from beginning to end - thank you!

  • I'm Italian, and we LOVE Downton Abbey!

We love you Maggie, cheers from Italy :)

  • She really is best part of the show. Her timing is impeccable.

  • BURN!!!

  • "Put that in your pipe, and smoke it!"

  • "Why does everyday involve a fight with an American?" bahaha..love it! Maggie is the equivalency of our Betty White! As an American, and one whose ancestors came over from England on the Mayflower, I just love that line, and can't get enough of Downton Abbey!

  • LOVE IT !!!!

  • CLICK on my user-name to SEE the NEW video MASH-UP between Downton Abbey & The Super Bowl! Lady Grantham is the STAR! It's HILARIOUS!

  • - Sorry about the vase.

    - Oh don't be, don't be. It was a wedding gift from a frightful aunt. I have hated it for half a century.

  • a recent episode she's on a telephone and having difficulty, "is this an instrument of communication, or torture"? pretty good stuff.

  • "I'm not being ridiculous! No Englishman would DREEEEAM of dying, in...SOMEONE ELSE"S HOUSE?!?!??..."

  • wa-wa-what is a weekend?

  • check out 'Downton Abbey Series 3 2012' on facebook :)

  • so put that in your pipe and smoke it!

  • i dont understand the chicken lady

  • lol I love MAGGIE!!

  • I have a lot of friends I don't like...

  • Love the show. If I didn't, I'd still watch to hear the Dowager's lines. Dame Maggie is excellent.

  • The best moment: the Spanish flu joke in the dinner, a very very cold joke...

  • She is my Hero.

  • One of my favorites. She is unbelievably good. Great acting is all about making it seem easy and effortless that anyone can do it. Meryl Streep does it and so does Maggie.

  • Oh thank you for this...it's priceless

  • Lady Grantham is priceless! See her go head to head with the spiffing Super Bowl! Like, share, and enjoy! Search YouTube for "Downton Abbey vs. The Super Bowl" and prepare yourself to be mirthful!

  • "Know englishman would dream of dying in someone else's house" when i saw that for the first time 2 years ago i had to pause to tv coz i was laughing so hard, still cracks me up.

  • Is there anyone funnier than dear Maggie?

  • "You won't be seeing me again".

    "Is that a promise?"

  • Hell yeah! I LOVE it! MORE! MORE! MORE!

  • #6 hiularious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "What is a weekend?' is by far the best line EVER! You have to have "the look" to go with it though.

  • She is hilarious!!!! love all her scenes and the faces she makes, specially #6 when she is about to fall and the face that matthew makes is super funny. Maggie is a great actress and no one could have done violet better than her. Love the show!!!!!

  • #ShitCollegeStudentsNeverSay :

    "What is a weekend?"

  • Maggie rules! You go, girl.

  • last one is the best. "Put that in your pipe and smoke it" I did not know they had that saying in the 1900s...

  • @OpheliaBookworm They didn't, until Violet coined it.

  • @MoltenPlastic true...

  • Maggie Smith has made Downton!

  • SOOOOOOOO excited to see how she plays off of Shirley McLain - who was JUST cast for Lady Grantham's mother from New York!?

  • Last one is the best lol

  • Maggie Smith steals the show in Downton. Good picks!

  • The best is definitely: "When you're married, your husband will tell you what your opinions are"

  • @MrNSheikh Yeah like anybody would dare tell Lady V what her opinions are!

  • Hilarious

  • Can you do a Part Two? There are so many you forgot! LOL :)

  • Sir Richard Carlisle: "I'm leaving in the morning, Lady Grantham. I doubt we'll meet again."

    Lady Grantham: "Do you promise?"

  • Best Dowager Countess line: "Put that in your pipe and smoke it."

  • Matthew Crawley "Sorry about the vase"

Grand Mama "Oh don't be don't be, it was a wedding present from a frightful anunt, i have hated it for half of century!"

  • Dame Maggie is quite marvelous!

  • Was I the only one who half jumped up to save Maggie?

  • Missing the line where she says "put that in your pipe and smoke it" !! Great job on the vid.

  • @gpbweg Thank you I LOVED IT .. The one that made me chuckle was 'Chair Surfing'.. Was Dan Stevens, as 'Mathew' trying not to laugh, or as himself.. Hee hee ..

Brilliant series, superbly written, acted and I cannot wait for series 3 in the Autumn, here in the UK.. YIPPEE..

I will have to content myself by watching series 1&2 and the Christmas episode for now..*sighs*

Best wishes and regards from Wales .. :0)x

  • Thank You so much for showing her best bits, just what I have been waiting for!...She truly makes Downton Abbey and without her it would not be as good as it is!

  • "What is a weekend". BWUHAUHAUHA Maggie Smith, I LOVE U XD

  • Oh Granny!

  • haha i love this so much!<3 "what is a weekend?"

  • this woman deserves ALL the awards she can get.

  • Sir Richard Carlisle: I doubt I'll be returning

    Lady Grantham: Do you promise?

  • @imsohorsey I totally agree!!! This is the best moment.

  • My favorite of hers is the "well we can't have him assassinated.......can we?"

  • My favorite is one that's not here. When she's having tea with Cora in the garden and Cora tells her Mary is upset over the Turkish guy's death. The Dowager Countess replies "We can't fall to pieces over the death of every foreigner. We'd be in a state of collapse every time we open a newspaper"

  • "So, put that in your pipe and smoke it!"

  • the 'suit of armour' did it for me. thank for posting this.

  • Of course, the real credit for these lines goes to Julian Fellowes, who writes and produces the show -- but they wouldn't be half as funny without Smith's masterful and matchless delivery!

  • "Weekend" and swivel chair are my faves. Very funny!

  • "Why must every day involve a fight with an American?"

    HAHAHA.....

I'm British-American and that line reminds me of something my English grandmother would be prone to saying...

  • OMG the swivel chair! I died laughing!!!!

  • oh. what about the scene where she says"we ca't assassinate him, i suppose"

  • The swivel chair c:

  • Well done to maggie smith on her emmy award for this series - it is richly deserved

  • My favorite line from the Christmas special....

(In response to someone fuming that they are leaving)

    "Do you promise?"

    Priceless...

    :-)

  • I noticed that these are all from series 1. Could you please do one for series 2?

  • Rofl :D

  • gracious I'm so hooked on this show & all the characters. Has any show been this rich & wonderful & so full of twist & turns? Everyone is cast so perfectly..... just brilliant.... I hope it never ends....

  • The last one was the best "so put that in your pipe and smoke it!"

  • Violet Crawley is my queen!

  • she is a genius! hahaha the chair scene is the funniest and the phrase "what is a weekend?"..hahaha

  • Hahahaha! Love it!!! Thank you for uploading this!

  • As an American guy I'm really enjoying this program. I think dame Maggie Smith is the star here. You just have to love the Dowager Countess. I hope this shows younger people that you don't have to be 20 and cute forever to be fun and interesting. And her clothes are so beautiful, people sure knew how to dress 100 years ago. As least women then dressed according to there age. Not like the idiots on all those "housewife" shows!

  • @Buffalobigboy69 This series is terrific, and full of wonderful actors. But Maggie Smith gives distinction to whatever she does ... and her lines are topping!

  • @WeeWyllie Very true!

  • I just love the "chair-sailing" scene so much. "Why does every day involve a fight with an American?" :D
