  • I would just like to say I think there should be a version entitled "SHE thinks she'll keep HIM". Because there are men that do this too. Try to please their wives in every way possible and its just never enough. My ex-wife is a prime example. I gave her everything she ever wanted and she up and filed for divorce. There's just no pleasing some people. Thumbs up guys if a woman has ever done this to you too.

  • Spoiled women...

  • what a gorgeous Rickenbacker!

  • this song always get me I love it

  • suzy bogguss is absolutely stunning in this video... I saw her live in concert feb 17th 2012... she is 55 now but her voice is as crystal clear as ever....

  • 7 great voices...and 7 great asses...perfect!!!

  • The 90's country will always be the best era of country music. You had Reba, George Strait, Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn, Alabama, Alan Jackson, all the ladies in the video above, Vince Gill, and so on. Literally THE BEST ERA!!!!!!!!!!! EVER!!!!!!

  • going to see bogguss tomorrow feb17th 2012... in north georgia... there is more talent on that stage than any country music award show of today!!!!!!

  • GREAT !!!

  • My God Suzy Boguss looks absoutely HOTT in this video! Ive always had a crush on her!!

  • Patty Loveless and Suzy Boguss look incredible.

  • @nwosukz yep they really do.... and have the talent to go along with it !!!! going to see bogguss in north georgia in 4 weeks...she stills plays 75 to 100 shows a year all over the U.S. and the U.K.

  • AWESOME GROUP OF WOMEN !!!!!!

  • Can't help but notice Emmy"s disinterest The woman helped create the platform they all stand on.

  • what a load of crap

  • These are the living legends of country music. Their time will not come again.

  • Please don't mention cookie cutters like Taylor Witless with these wonderful, true, stars!

  • @NMWriterofWords Thank you NMW, I have been looking for just the right word to describe the "New" Nashville and American Idol sound, "Cookie cutter" is perfect. The four criteria: 1) are you pretty; 2) do you have the necessary minimal amount of talent (i.e., you desperately need AI or Nashville to make it); 3) are you, or can you be made commercially viable; and 4) do you do as you are told. Cookie cutter, the perfect word thanks. Patsy would have never made it today

  • @zappasaurus That's cool, it's perfect the herd of "talent challenged" but marketable stick figures they put out there today.

  • think bogguss might be the best looking country music artist ever !!!!!!! and 19 years after this performance I will see her in person live in north georgia.... still touring !!!

  • does taylor swift think she can sing with these STARS

  • OoooooooH Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • isn't it the way it is....always the second rate citizen."God forbid she'll ever change her mind""Years of practice".....

  • @crabbybutt1

only if you explain. Who are you? Who is the "second rate citizen"?

  • That phrase has always bugged the hell out of me becuase my whiskey plagued father used to rub my saintled mother's face in the phrase day in and day out. "Yeh, Alice, I think, I'll keep her." And as others laughed, my mother silently wept with shame, pain and long suffering for her children.

  • Love it!!

  • nothing wrong with learning music early in life, they just need to get their education before coming stars, and learn from these ladies who traveled the circuit before they did.

  • I agree, now days Nashville has gone to hell with the rest of the music industry, these ladie where talented, never hear of these ladies out in fron anymore in front of country music, these young teenage girls trying to be grown up, when their still wet behind the ears, I think they or to get their degree's, and finish their education, before they become stars, nothing with starting to learn music early, but it does look silly for a young girl to try to look like Dolly.

  • WOW!!!! What a line up of beautiful country girls.....love em all. Love country period.

  • one of my all time favorites !!

  • This song runs like a well-oiled machine, it just moves along. No auto-tune, no backing tracks, just talented musicians singing a great song. Oh, and it ends unhappily - no feminist empowerment here - the woman in the song turns 51 (my calculation) working for minimum wage - I know women like this in real life and it's sad. If you are 45 or older, you may remember the Geritol TV ad from where the title was taken.

  • @dminnich6062 "For 15 years she had a job and not one raise in pay" refers to motherhood from 21 to 36. Now, at 36, she's in the typing pool, and the future is open-ended :-) I didn't know about Geritol, though.

  • @courdabedum Oops, you so right on the chronology of the song - I projected a real-life acquaintance of mine onto the song - my error. I do disagree that even at 36, her future is open-ended... a middle-age woman with few marketable skills and 3 kids will face serious limitations. "God forbid you change your mind" indeed.

  • @dminnich6062

Overthink much? Take a breath....Chapin singing a song, your name was not mentioned.

  • @nula07 Think at all, nula07? Clearly no. We all relate songs to some part of life, otherwise they have no connection.

  • @dminnich6062

Nah, you are not thinking about "songs". Just stop, you have no clue of what you speak. Best name for you is a "flamer". Give-away is your telling people HOW to think or feel about a song, or a musical performance, and how YOU feel about their response. Go away.

  • Comment removed

  • @nula07 Best name for you: "Psycho". Your bitter, angry post makes absolutely no sense at all. Go away.

  • @dminnich6062

My post was neither bitter, nor angry. Sorry, always judgemental....you're wrong.

  • @nula07 If you think your posts were neither bitter nor angry, then you must be a truly miserable person to be with; I pity the fool that takes up with you. LOL at the irony of you calling me judgemental - more projection on your part!

  • @dminnich6062

Your regard is of no value whatsoever. Typical, common...only what you have to say matters. For example "I pity the fool that takes up with you". Pity away; you regard it as a solid statement, because you said it. It isn't. LOL....really? Name calling...dolt...childish. You're only a flamer, here only to incite, got it. Get it, a paid flamer, eh?

  • @nula07 You are truly a sick person, troll. Get help soon. Your statements bear no reflection to reality.

  • @dminnich6062 I THINK IT IS OBVIOUS THAT YOU WERE TOUCHED ONE TOO MANY TIMES ON YOUR PRIVATE PARTS BY YOUR SISTERS WHEN YOU WERE LITTLE, SO DO US ALL A FAVOR AND BREAK THOSE PROZACS IN HALF AND GO BACK TO YOUR LADY GAGME VIDEOS.......yea thats right looser ....im a troll

  • @nula07 Fact is, it is you that got caught making unsubstantiated and false claims about me, and you are the one that started this with your attacks on me. A paid flamer - HA! major projection - look in the mirror, troll. Do everyone a favor and die ASAP, or a least stop bothering us on the internet. You are a waste of of space and oxygen on this planet.

  • @dminnich6062

Why else would you be here? I'm not a troll, call me whatever you want. Why are you here? You have no serious regard for the music....isn't that a waste of your time? What do you want here?

  • @dminnich6062

Nope. Music, songs, will always be there. Up to a person to determine the connections. Not up to you.

  • @nula07 More pseudo-insightful ramblings from a demented mind. Thanks for sharing.

  • @nula07 Huh? Where did I ever write that it was up to me "to determine the connections"? Oh, yeah - I didn't - you are once again of accusing me of things I never wrote. Typical troll.

  • @dminnich6062

And your lack of regard for women is duly noted, locked and loaded. We remember the pathetic ads, perhaps written by needy men, who never grew up. Try to keep on point; strong female singers, about whom you obviously have a problem. What a surprise. Your passive-aggressive thing, give it a rest. Not working.

  • @nula07 What a pile of pseudo-insightful crap you've written. Nowhere did I state such things, and only pyschopaths with a chip on their shoulder would have read any of what you said in my comments. Get some help soon.

  • @dminnich6062

And only narcissists with absolutely no interest in the music would say so. Your messages speak for themselves.

  • @nula07 LOL at the irony - classic case of projection on your part. Hint - don't start an argument you can't finish without descending into "nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah" childish insults. BTW, I am an active professional musician of over 20 years, you dolt.

  • MrRazorblad999

Ditto, Ditto, Ditto!!!! Ya stole my thoughts.

  • "Every christmas card showed the perfect family" Tell me about it...

  • Country Music at it's best.. the stuff today is crap.

  • suzy boguss is plain out adorable,,,,, these girls were R E A L country music

  • i lo ve this one so much im going to get it

  • a fantastic, and simple, no fancy crap needed, video.

and this commentt from 52 year old wasted on cheap eine right now....though i;ll be sober tomoorw and still loving this song.

  • These women are really good and I love this (clearly, I'm listening to the video), but I'll take Taylor, Carrie, Hillary, and Miranda over them any day. Sorry, but it's my truth.

  • Yeah I saw it on CMT in 1997, just fell in love. GREAT song and GREAT performance.

  • @kristen0420 I have been looking for this for YEARS!! Seriously, like almost 15 years! I saw it one time on CMT, and completely blanked on the title! THANK YOU for posting it!!

  • real ladies, not like those tattooed flip flop wearing trash from today

  • I wish Benmont Tench was there playing organ

  • Wow, this has to be the greatest group of backup singers ever! I love this song! I think songs like this always appeal to me & strike a chord within me because they touch the part of me in which my big sister still lives on, even though she was taken to heaven almost two years before my birth.

  • country music is not my cup of tea, mostly jam to the cure, the smtihs, IU, Yuki Hsu and Morning Musume but every once in awhile i run into a song on YT where i must say to myself, "this is pretty good".

  • I laugh whenever I remember that Wynnona Judd wasn't included in this because she said she didn't know the song LMFAO- what a drama queen!!

    Jealous Much?!?

  • I laugh whenever I remember that Wynnona Judd wasn't included in this because she said she didn't know the song LMFAO- what a drama queen!!

  • I cannot praise this woman enough..true beauty inside and out....

  • ??

  • mary chapin carpenter

  • Remember Benmont Tench in the original version...

  • I don't quite understand why there are 4 'dislikes' on this video - what is there to dislike about it? It's absolutely fantastic!

  • these are the truly beautiful women of country, not the ready mix and poor in jeans tarts they produce today

  • @NJtuber88 Totally agree. These ladies have class and grace in addition to being incredibly talented as well as beautiful.

  • This is a lesbian feminists wet dream here.

    NTTAWWT

  • wait, country music was still authentic not too long ago?

  • HELL YEAH!!!!!!! CHAPIN RULES!!!!!! :D

  • @FilmLubber I never thought of it that way.

  • you hear the expression 'it doesn`t get any better than this', and this is exactly what that means! ...Perfection.

  • all I can say is Pam and Suzy...WOOF!!!!!!!!!!

  • don't like country music much at all myself....but love this. What a cool version with the legendary backup singers. Awesome.

  • Would love to see a modern version with the new country women singers...that would rock

  • @Nails308 nice idea!

  • How many of these great ladies are producing charting records today? It's sad but we don't see many stars with staying power anymore. Nobody has 40 year or 50 year careers like Johnny Cash, George Jones or Merle Haggard.. Reba is getting close but not there yet.

  • @RXBA3U5 Not many. These ladies were my favorites. They were great (still are, really) -- they sang backup on each other's recordings w/ no big whoop. Think the band was mostly very accomplished Nashville studio musicians, but each singer might have brought one or two members of her own band on stage, I know Patty did.

  • @RXBA3U5 What about George Strait? 30 years and still going strong.

  • @JohnBoy918 Yeah, George is still hammering away. I wish he could rekindle the big fire he had going back in the 80s and 90s.

  • @RXBA3U5 And to think- Reba had been nominated with almost all of the ladies on that stage at award shows, and lost to every one of them- and this was in the 90's. The decade where Reba's reign as Queen really started to show. Ironically, she is the only one still today turning out hits. Makes you wonder. I'm not saying this isn't good. I love the video. It's just the way they "hand" out awards now is ridiculous. They should've given Reba alot more recognition, like "other" females now.

  • @bRDwyAnnIe Watch NBC's "Who Do You Think You Are" on Friday, March 2 at 7:00 PM CST. I think we'll see another side of Reba that is very deep.

  • @RXBA3U5 I know.....I can't wait! Also, she will be on Oprah's Master Class on March 4th. She is actually going to talk about the plane crash that took the lives of her band. It's been almost 21 years, and she has never really talked in a live interview about that. Watch it on the OWN network!!!!!!

  • where has she been radio dont play her much wonder why she always been good singer song writer.

  • You have the date wrong. This originally was aired in May, 1993. I taped it when it originally aired and still have the video.

  • @JohnBoy918 What show was it from? I think perhaps a tribute to women in country music.

  • @strawberryseason--- think this was a cbs airing,, but the girls toured the country with this show.. this is just one song ( show casing all of them on stage together),,, but they did their individual stuff during these concerts too... check out bogguss doing" aces " on this same show... it is incredible performance.. its on youtube....

  • @strawberryseason It was a tribute to the Women Of Country, or something like that. Aired in May, 1993.

  • My wife and I were at this show and it was one of the best I've ever seen live. The crew had a good time and pulled a prank on Miss Judd bringing a guy out of the audience to sneak up behind her while doing a song. Needless to say the show took quite a long time to film.

  • @garybrownfie -- I'm incredibly jealous. I had this concert on VHS for years.

  • this sounds amazing for being sung live...There isn't too many people that can sing live without being out of tune anymore

  • In 1996 I was 16yrs old and I remember rushing home from school to beat my sisters to the remote control just so I could watch this show!

  • Thanks i needed that!!!!

  • oh to have had a front row seat!

  • I love this song, I love this album, I love MCC!!! yeah the 90's were a time of classy country ladies! I gotta admit though, I love watching the drummer in this video..he is rockin out and has some super hair! hahaha...great post!! thanks!

  • Never get fed up listening to this track, quite a sad story really.

  • This is the difference between women of country and women of rock/pop.

Women of rock/pop may sing together like this but first you have to call it "Divas". Then they just try to out loud each other.

  • I will say this for Emmylou Harris...she certainly contains her happiness well.

Mary Chapin Carpenter really did a great job on this song and the ladies singing background blend nicely.

  • this is a classic

  • Just amazing...everyone of these women at the top of their games..no attitude, no diva crap...wowwowwow

  • when the women of country were truly great.....

  • This woman has more talent in her litle finger than most that are in the buisness today - such a grasp on the human experiance of emotions.

  • @FilmLubber

Well said Film Lubber, but you still sound like a bitch. Chapin-Carpenter's whole design is to destroy the normal relationship between a man and a woman/ no wonder her husband left i take my chances....

  • Suzy looks so sweet!!

  • they really are amazing all of them their voices are those of angels

  • Is the entire documentary posted somewhere? I'd love to see it again.

  • one of her best!!

  • 90's country was so cool and entertaining, these ladies were the Women of Country. Not like the girls of today, trying to play at being a grown up. All of these ladies look like they were enjoying being apart of this occassion.

  • Love this video and this collaboration! Woot!

  • AWESOME

  • AWESOME PERFORMANCE!!! Country female artists turns me on... Mary Chapin Carpenter, great voice! Trisha Yearwood looks so fresh and charming.

  • i know what u mean. Not today so much, but in the nineties. Especially the Patty Loveless, Suzy Boguss combo. Oh my!

  • Comment removed

  • Suzy Bogguss looks sooooo pretty!!!!

  • What a talented cast of ladies. Wow!

  • THIS WIDEO HSA ME IN AWE

  • Compare this talent with the talent of today...This is real talent, not circus acts like today....Patty is to die for. Suzy, oh, I remember watching this.

  • Comment removed

  • i wish there was a version of this song with the "she's" replaced with "he's". There are women who treat men like this. My ex was one of them

  • Sorry, I meant "he's" with "she's". Like she thinks she'll keep HIM.

  • Where/When was this preformed?

  • The special was called 'Women of Country' and was filmed in 1996. Not sure where.

  • it was a speical for pbs in nashvillie i think

  • @kristen0420 This special was recorded on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in Murphresboro, TN just south of Nashville.

  • @kristen0420 @dfdemt This special was actually in '92... it was Loveless's last performance before her vocal chord surgery.

  • @kristen0420 This special was actually in '92... it was Loveless's last performance before her vocal chord surgery.

  • @kristen0420 Pretty sure it was 1993 it was filmed.

  • @kristen0420 this was taped before 1996, maybe around 1993 or 1994

  • @kristen0420 went to wikipedia, it was done and filmed in 1993

  • @kristen0420 MY FAVE AND I REMEMBER IT WELL... EVEN BY HUSBAND IS A HUGE FAN AND HE'S A ROCKER...

  • @kristen0420 - are you sure it was 1996? i thought it was 1992.

  • @dfdemt was in Murfreesboro, just south of Nashville, at Middle TN State Univ auditorium. I was fortunate to be there.

  • great song and performance by all these lovely, talented women! Thanks for posting.:) Patty Loveless is my fav of all these artists, tho each one is great at what they do. I sure wish they made more country songs like this nowadays, instead of making it all pop sounding etc.

  • Country isn't what it used to be. I grew up in the 90's when country like this ruled the airwaves. Today's Country isnt even close to this! I'd rather listen to country from the 90's as opposed to today. This one hits the nail on the head, as it was also one of my favorites by her. These women left their mark on country-now hopefully it will not get eroded.

  • Amen! It's so true. So much talent on that stage. Emmylou, Kathy, Trisha, Pam, Patty, Suzy and Mary. It really gives me chills. The 90s were the best.. especially for women.

  • Can anyone with the dvd , does it credit all the band members? And if it does can you tell me if that's Jerry Douglas around the 2:58 mark playing dobro? Sure looks like him.

    FABULOUS RECORDING.

  • Good eye, that does look like Jerry Douglas

  • thanks 4 posting

  • Is Mary Chapin Carpenter ok? Last I heard of her, she had a pulmonary Embolism and had to cancel a tour. Some of my best memories include seeing her play at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, IL. She used to play there every summer, but stopped booking gigs there. My wife and I keep checking the Ravinia festival to see if she'll return.

  • So true charlet! I lived country music, when cmt was real country! Now its all wanna be tim mgraw line dancers....

  • i would have given the world to have been a part of country music during that time period. as it is now, well, i think i'll just sing in the church choir. what a group of back up. just the chance to sing one of them would be amazing.

  • I was working at a country station back then, and it really was a special time. I got to meet all of the women in the video except for Emmylou, and they all seemed to be genuinely nice. A couple of things that surprised me: 1)Chapin is _really_ tiny. I'm just over 6' 1", and the only way to get a decent pic of the two of us was for me to sit down. 2) Pam Tillis has a huge voice. She sang a little bit at the station, and was almost pegging the needles with her mic turned down to "1"

  • Is that a choir of angels she has beside her or what? All six of those women singing backup have put their stamp on country music in one way or another. Couldn't ask for better help, IMO.

    Amazing.

And great song, too. One of her best. I'm not a woman, and I'm not in a lousy relationship. But it still makes me want to stand up and say "hell yeah, sister!"

Or the ever-popular "you go girl!" (can't believe I just wrote that).

    LOL.

An anthem, of sorts, for sure.

    And I love the Rickenbacker...

  • Also, it's sad to see that people of my generation or from younger generations don't appreciate Mary Chapin's music; while browsing videos of hers on youtube I often read the comments and most people leaving comments are over 40 years old. I'm not saying she doesn't have younger fans, but if she does they are hardly making their presence felt. It's sad to see my peers flocking to watch & comment on Rihanna's or Britney's videos and ignoring Mary's work. But these are the times we live in!

  • The climate has definitely changed and I can't put my finger on it. It seems as if adults are more concerned with what others think and it's not cool to admit you like anything except what just came out this week. I turned 20 in '91, but it was still okay to say you liked music from the 80's, even 70's. Now, the public might completely discard an artist they loved a year ago. The young listener is so mercurial.

  • I'm only speaking for myself, But i am still pretty young and love country music! Always have and not afraid to admit it. Patty Loveless is my fav of all these women i must admit. I have loved her since I knew of her when I was 16 and still tell ppl she is my fav. and its been more than a yr now! lol :D But ur right about some young ppl discarding their favs after not that long. But not every young person does. At least not me anyway. :) Proud to be a country music as well as Patty loveless fan.

  • I think that's great. People should never limit themselves. We have so many sides to us that can be touched by different songs and different genres, different artists. I've just now gotten to the point where I appreciate songs from the 60's. I think everyone shuld do an experiment. Put your radio dial on a station that plays music you don't really care for. I think within a week, most people will hear something that touches them somehow.

  • thanks. I agree. Oh yes i have realized that recently to with different genres and everything. Ever since i can remember I've loved country music. Then I found an artist named Sarah Brightman and its fascinating to me how much her music touches me and also cuz her genre is completely diff than what i normally like or listen to. It's weird, I've always enjoyed music that was from those times. 60's 70's etc..and i wasn't born til the late 80's!:D..That is a good idea of an experiment btw. I agree.

  • i am always told i was born in the wrong time. i was alive when these songs were written. early childhood memories are of me singing to the radio along with all of these ladies. they inspired me and helped to shape my vocal sound. i don't care for much of the new generation of music. occasionally someone with real talent comes along, but most are just dolls with stage presence and vocal stabilizers.

  • That's telling him kctexan. Congrats on getting out of your bad situation.

I'm a guy and I find this song strangely inspiring myself.

Women in loveless marriages, having kids for far less then ideal reasons while these women are miserable and don't even dare realize it is bad for EVERYONE.

And I love the way she phrases it. Not angrily. Just that , in essence, what was good enough for women 100 years ago (when they had few rights) just doesn't cut it any longer.

    They want more.

  • Believe it or not this song and video helped me leave my no good abusive husband after 20 years ... it just spoke to me ... and exactly describes how it was all that time ... now I'm with a REAL man and couldn't be happier ... thank you Mary Chapin Carpenter!

  • Thats amazing!!!! :D So happy for you!! Wow!

  • Good grief! What a great bunch of back-up singers...abou a million bucks worth of talent!

  • Yes they are...but talented in appearance and vocals only. Except for Emmylou Harris and Pam Tillis, the rest of them wrote almost none of all the songs they recorded.

Whereas Mary Chapin Carpenter wrote almost all of them (including this one - co wrote).

  • She wrote one song---something about a sister leaving---I just remember "with no signs of someone who expects to return"---i can't even listen to it---it's brilliant but it's heartbreaking

  • That song is called "Only A Dream" and its from her "Come On Come on" album (though it was "no sign of someone who expects to be back"). That was a really great song and a great piece of songwriting. McRocket is right by suggesting that people should give more credit to artists who write their own songs as well as perform them. But having only vocal talent and not writing your own material is still better than if you had no vocal talent and not being able to write your own at the same time.

  • Yeah, that's the one. That song always made me cry, it was gut-wrenching. Yes, folk who also write deserve more credit than they get. "still better than if you had no vocal talent and not being able to write your own at the same time." I saw this interview with Mic Fleetwood--he said ( I'm paraphrasing here): "The music industry has turned into more of an entertainment industry these days."

  • Well i can't argue with Mic on that one; he's right. What bothers me is not that music today is flashier and a lot of artists aim for shock value, but the fact that they put too much emphasis on looks, on the image of the artists instead of their talent. It bothers me that the image of the artist is often manufactured and tailor-made for a lowbrow audience as opposed to being an extension of the artists personality. And also the fact that many of the artists today don't even bother to come up

  • with meaningful, thought provoking lyrics. They just go for the "fast-food" catchy but superficial lyrics that -just like a greasy burger- may taste good but after you're done eating it you are left with only the extra calories and little nutritional value. And just like fattening foods are bad for your body, stupid repetitive cliched lyrics are bad for the mind; at least that's my opinion.
