It's the first Video I see on Bonsai and the only knowledge I have of this tree is from the movie "GREMLINS". I am looking forward into making this a past time. I am a beginner and would love to start on my first Bonsai. Any information that you think I would need would be greatly appreciated. I subscribed to your page and hopefully I'll get all the info I will need. Nice Bonsai by the way
I'm curious as to why you didn't partially bare root it (leave a bit of soil because of the symbiotic fungus that goes with conifers) separate the trees and replant them in the soil so they could grow in the new soil instead of slowly growing roots outside of their, most likely, exhausted soil. Sure it would have been a bit of a shock but they would have gotten over it quickly since it's the middle of growing season and junipers are usually quick recoverers. Is there a follow up in the works?
Thanx 4 sharing, I love bonsais but never had green fingers like my mom, now my self planted flowers gave us flowers this year!! So I would like to try now that I am getting better, is the old age!! hope to get wiser and little bit of green fingers, I will follow your advices. Thnx a lot again for taking your time to share, love & light to all beings in the Universe, the pingüins arrived early this year in Berlin!! Wish you warm and happy christmas, may the good wishes of all come true.
I just bought a Japanese Boxwood at walmart, and want to make into a bonsai i have it in a 2in. high pot with regular soil that it came with. i havent trimed it or wired it. how can i make it like that.
I don't think there are any videos on you tube that are as good as yours. You seem like you really know what you are doing. Also-could you do this with a boxwood? I was looking at mine in the garden and wondering if it could be done.
Great video Charles.Being a bit of an old timer I was just turned on by my son to these videos on Bonsai and I have to say yours are the best.Benn working with them down here in south florida for 23 yrs now. Besides the ficus benjamina,do you work with other tropical trees? By the way we can't get away with working on junipers in the summer down here. Gives us something to do in the winter.Anyway I hope you continue doing these videos, your doing a great service.Keep up the good work.
Decomposed granite. It is used to make garden paths and patios -- you will see it used a lot on HGTV. You can buy it at sand and gravel yards, and some building supply stores.
@chasnsx Building supply stores like maybe Home Depot or Lowes? Any chance we can see an update video of how this bonsai looks today. It's over two years since this video was made.
There are a number of online retailers that sell bonsai pots. Dallas Bonsai Garden is one of the better ones, and they have something similar to the one I used here. Ebay is also a good source.
Hello chasnxs, I just moved from Shelby NC toriverside CA. I would like to know if know of any bonsai nurserys in the area. I looked for some in Chino but the seem no longer excist, can you point me in the right direction?
I replied to your private message, but for the viewers, here's the short version: House of Bonsai in Lakewood, CA, Chikugo En in Gardena, Yamaguchi Nursery in West L.A., Fuji Nursery in Sylmar, and San Gabriel Nursery in San Gabriel, CA.
Hello, my chas. I just moved from Shelby NC to riverside California. I love bonsai and I know you are from California your self. My question is, do you know of any bonsai nursery in the area? I look for two in Chino, and they are no longer there. Please help a fellow bonai care taker.
Thank you for posting this chasnsx. very interesting to watch and educational. hope to see more of this from you soon. and show us after a year or so on what will it look liked . the tree that you have just did.
I'm curious, Watching you reduce the root-ball looked very indiscriminate. I understand that root pruning should focus on removing the larger tap root and larger branch roots, while trying to preserve the young feeder roots. You in essence cut 2/3rds of the root ball with no real discretion. How is this tree? Did it survive?
please could you tell me when is the best time of the year to proced with all this process, I live in illinois and fall is almost ending and I have many junipers in galons waiting but Im not shure if this is the time for this prosess.
Input the search term "bonsai" and under recent videos you should see my newest video. I actually did a segment where I mixed the soil because I had so many requests like yours.
You're a GENIUS! What a fantastic series! Thank you so much for making these videos and for thinking of others. You explain everything so clearly and I love your confidence, too!
VERY inspiring! I'm going to try this as my next project. I can't wait! You got me all excited. LOL!
I admit that my wiring is my weakness -- I've been teased a few times by my Japanese sensei. With that said, I intentionally wire loosely on fast growing trees to keep the wire from cutting in, and on this tree, that is starting to happen. Watch for a follow up video on this tree in the future.
Great job on your videos! Do you have any tips on gardenia bonsais? I potted one last autumn and with spring around the corner I don't know when or how I should trim it.
Camellias and Gardenias are broadleaf evergreens. Do not prune back to bare wood unless you are removing a branch. Prune in early spring after the new buds form -- you should see them at the nodes between the leaves and stems. Therafter, prune after new leaves emerge and the new growth hardens off.
None of the Japanese American elders I studied bonsai under would have ever let me in their yards with my shirt untucked. Aside from that, we'll be getting into some jin carving demonstrations soon, and I don't use power tools (around bonsai or otherwise) with any loose clothing hanging around.
I will be posting follow ups as the tree develops. Right now the largest trunk is putting on new growth, but the other two are still dormant, and it may lose the smallest trunk due to the heat -- but that's bonsai.
