This clip reminds me how It was a simpler kinder world back then.
With all our fancy computers and technology people have become lazy, no one seems to have the skilll or capacity to create good original music anymore. It's become a peer driven popularity contest of musical gimmicks and vocal affectations replacing the hard work and dedication of earlier times.
Who wrote the 'musical bridge' to the middle of the song to make it '3 min'; Was it the carpenters themselves? i remember the commercial from 1970--ha ha, now it is a song in a scary movie 1408!
According to Wikipedia, Richard Carpenter saw this commercial on TV, called Paul Williams, who wrote and sang it and asked him if the Carpenters would record it. He also asked Williams if there was a bridge to the song. There wasn't but Williams, needing a hit song, lied and said there was, so he and his writing partner worked for nights to come up with a bridge and a final verse before giving it to the Carpenters.
My folks used to bank with Crocker back before they got swallowed up by Wells Fargo, and I didn't know this tune used to be a jingle at first. Makes this commercial kinda deep.
I actually remember when this commercial came out, everyone was asking to hear that song but it was just a jingle on TV .. David Carpenter got a hold of it, wrote a killer arrangement and the rest is history.

With so much contempt regarding popular songs being co-opted and being used for jingles, it is interesting to finally be made aware of a jingle that should have never been turned into a song.
One of the greatest and most evocative commercials I've ever seen. It's remarkable how some of the images and styles capture the era so well. Thanks for posting this!
I was the recording engineer on the session. It was recorded at El Dorado Studios in Hollywood In 1970. I wish I had all the names of the group playing on the session. You might email Paul (Williams) or Bob (Todd).. They might know.
Thank you, Randy, for playing your part in this piece of magic. It sounds like Roger Nichols is back there on piano (and bass?). Did Hal Riney come down to record with you, too? Any other details would be very welcomed. Who else did you engineer at El Dorado?
Thank's for the answer. I had Bob Todd, but it was Roger Nichols that was on the session. I don't remember if Hal R. was there. (re: Other's) The only one that you have heard of is Johnny Otis, El Dorado was part his studio.
Terrific - now if only someone vould find and post the Security Pacific commercial "Looking Forward." It's from around the same time, but I still have the tune in my head.
Wow, blast from the past. I was about 10 years old then and remembered that commercial because of the song (we lived in Nor Cal - Crocker Bank territory).
I'm a music history nut. This is the original version of We've Only Just Begun The Bass line smokin the whole arrangment is excellent. But That lady really looks out of place for a wedding.
Agreed. If if weren't for Roger and Paul, kudos to them, the Carpenters would never have made their own version and turned it into a mega hit, but I'm glad they did. Great footage too!
Richard saw this commercial and recognized Paul voice... so you can say if weren't for the Crocker Bank commercial they never have made their own version.
Finally I find !

It used to be that banks would give new customers a free toaster for opening an account. Now when you buy a toaster, you can get a free bank. LOL

@oswaldwang That sounds a lot like Joe Osborn on the bass. That could be Hal Blaine on drums... that guy played on everything back then.

Those were the days when TV commercials became pop hits. Remember "I'd Like To Teach The World to Sing" for Coke?

That is Paul Williams singing it too.
