Flight of the Conchords has a lot of prejudices ! i'm french and i can say that "fous du fafa" means nothing. i've never heard of it before this video... and i can't understand what the singer say when he speak in french, i have to watch the english subtitles to understand the words. ^^ but it's a great parody.... lol all the time of the video !
I don't think their humor comes from prejudice, I think they're using nonsense words on purpose to make fun of people (and themselves) for pretending to speak foreign languages to impress others. If you go to a first semester French course I bet a lot of the conversations sound like this :)
r u kidding? Of course it's funny if you don't know french because it's obvious that they're using very simple words and phrases. The grocery store scene alone makes that pretty clear... (holds up the fish, "jacques cousteau!" haha) and then she's like parle vous francais at the end and he's like, "no". It's pretty clear what's going on but the traslated version is fun. I speak no french except what any average person might know and I thought it was hilarious without the subtitles.
I don't know french, but the first time I saw this and he pulled out his passport somhow, I cracked up!! Then, when he says he can't speak french.... *holds back laughter*
It makes me laugh that people say I speak some french but didnt't understand some of this, because you clearly dont speak french. Being able to say 'bonjour' does not mean you can speak french.
The whole point behind this song is that theyre trying to impress by speaking french yet the phrases are all extremely simple basic ones straight from one of those 'learn french quick' type travel books.
I've only had one year of french in school so far, and I understood pretty much everything. I want to speak french fluently one day. It is true that you need to learn a lot more than "bonjour" to claim that you speak french. When I tell someone I speak a little french I say, "Je parle un peu francais."
Trust me, I learned of this video from my french teacher and she says it's translated crazy and then the rest means nothing. I'd belive her before I belived anyone on here. lol
Ok well I asked my teacher and she said that the x is put at the end to show that it's plural and means more than one. So I'm pretty sure my teacher knows what she's talking about
Your French teacher is right; 'foux' is the plural form of the word 'fou', which means crazy. An example would be "les gens sont foux" means "people are crazy."
In any case, the title is not supposed to mean anything; it's just a nonsensical French-sounding phrase, which is perfect for this song.
@KatelynRoseable Nope, 'les gens' definitely means people. For boys, you're either looking for 'les hommes' (which technically means men), 'les garçons', or, if your looking for a more colloquial word, 'les mecs' :)
@scribblevillage your teacher is wrong "fous" is the plural form for "fou" in French. That's actually a bit scary if your teacher approved this mistake...
@Faithliesindeath Actually the plural form of "fou" (crazy) is "fous", but there are words that finish with "x", it just shows that french is complicated :p
Does any know what we can relate "Foux du fafa" to or is it not by near any french?
