Black Label Columbia, W/Ben Selvin,& Frank Signorelli. The word "Gay " has been used as a slang connotation previously, as a term for Sexual conduct, having nothing to do w/Orientation beginning in the
1600's. For example, "They Gayed all night." Meaning they had Sex All night.
Who is the vocalist on this record?
Harold Arlen, Clifton Webb and Fred Astaire vocalized with the Reisman band quite frequently, Reisman worked with a lot of Broadway talent,
Obviously, 'Corrie', you have not spent much time around Gay people. Otherwise, you would not consider the word to be alien to their lifestyle or demeanor. I think the original meaning of the word, and the demographic group it has come to denote, mesh perfectly.
Referring to themselves as 'gay' was a way of putting a happy spin on their difficult situation. The present distortion of that usage by some...of referring to things and people as 'gay', as an insult, is extremely recent.
@Corrie121 Using Corrie as a man's first name can be considered an "alien" usage. It's always darkest beneath the candlestick. It's sad your name is an unfortunate aberration. Please go put your head in a dark Scottish hole.
In spite of the original intent, the song and the photos go perfectly together. I love the innocent Nazi poster with the slogan: "Then as today". How true!
Of course there was not the same connotation of the word gay as today. It may have started with Cary Grant in the 1938 film Bringing Up Baby. Even Bing Crosby recorded this song.
I agree that in the title of this song the word has its original meaning, and should not be understood the way it is today; the opposite would be an anachronism.
Seems they were ahead of American in sooo many ways. The US bars were very sheltered and raided up through the l960 and no touching in some states or dancing the "Vice Squad" had a hey day!.....5 stars
actually Panys clubs were huge in the big cities of America in the 1920's. Hollywood was constantly pushing the envelop on sexual mores of the time with Betty Boop and Mae West.....What is so sad w/ this vid and knowing what will happen to these people in these photos in only a few years after the pics were taken. Thousands of gays were murdered in concentraton camps throughout the Germany and Poland. Just sad.

It is so sad that this lovely word "gay" has been appropriated by persons who have attached to it an alien meaning.
This is a nice song and the orchestration is great.
Thank you for sharing.

Last image confirms what I've always suspected:
their hearts were young and gay. I think modern connotation of the word derives from the French gai.
