  • looking good...what software did u use btw? :)

  • Very good example of getting top notch graphics without ji-res images. Very good work. The only negative was the particles used for smoke. Water looked great.

  • nice.

  • Outstanding work. This must have been a lot of work, and it shows the effort and the energy went into it.

  • video game producer in the making??!!

  • 0:40 - it looks like the Victory Hotel level in Dreamfall...

  • please i need some help...i need a 3d citiy based on a real city.how much would it cost and how much time would it take for, lets say 2-3 good designers to design it???the city would be 3x3 square kilometers big and you have to be able to walk in this town (not like google street view where you just click trough). Thanks

  • @chupacabra20 sorry dude I don't do this stuff anymore. I don't have the time. If I did it would be $80 ?£50 per hour. So in the region of $8,000.

  • omg its look real i was thinking this was real!

  • Nice! You should look at doing renderings for urban planning projects...

  • Amazing! :-) Loved it!

  • with what programm?

  • nice!

  • its really good

  • Thats pretty cool..... took a bit of work.

  • Whoever said that this "doesn't look that good" is clueless. This is amazing work.

  • very impressive

  • awesome details

  • Wow...This was REALLY GOOD! What programs did you use? Seriously...Wow...

  • hell of the work u did

  • amayizing!!

  • Wow! Thats amazing dude!

  • OH MAN! That is stunning work both in visuals and music. Inspiring stuff...must've taken forever to model and render! The little textural details really bring this to life. I saw another like this a few days ago and, although not in the same league for realism, the chap had put in the odd silhouette of people moving across windows which I thought brought a whole new dimension to the scene...

  • are you serious ? this doesnt look that good at all, its ok

  • @danielb1234567891234

IMO its amazing if you think about just him doing it. Not too many people can do this or would do this lol

  • @danielb1234567891234 - Do bear in mind Daniel that this is 6 years old - technology has moved on a lot since then - please check out my updated render. And as Goldenpanda94 says - it is just me on my little old laptop, untrained and fumbling around in the dark! :-)

  • its good just for game level

  • love it

  • what is this for a program????????

  • Good job.

  • very nice, i can appreciate how much work went into that - not just modelling but planning lighting, camera moves etc.

It desperately needs ambient occlusion though, i assume you didn't do this because of render times right?

  • Thank you for your coments.

djivesp -Ambient Occlusion was not an option on Lightwave 7.5 which this was made on. Radiosity wasn't a viable option as it would increase a frame render to 2+ hours and it would still be rendering now. Do bear in mind I made this in 2006? I added it to You tube in 2007. So all the new technologies and render speeds were not available 3+ years ago.

  • what all did u use to make that?

  • Awesome! 0:44 I spotted you :P

  • Look back through the comments mate, I answer all the questions about the software and how I did it.

  • wat program did u use?

  • Found you in the video!

Great work on the city, very realistic. Must have taken ages.

  • This reminds me De_nightfever.

  • really cool

  • Wow! Cool!

  • Well Done

  • Good!No Amazing!It looks real real!!!

  • How I wish i could learn something like that! FUCK YOU!!!!! :)

  • WOW! that look SOOOO REAL!

  • This movie remind me about SimCity and Syndicate Wars.

  • can you say holy fucking shit!!! God damn.. great job. What program did you use for that? i'm guessing maya... right?

  • no, he used lightwave 7,5

  • some how reminds me of GTA 4

  • It's AMAZING!!!! I can't... I'm speechless!

  • OMG.. this is totally awesome.. It looks so reall... omg that water.. dammit amazing..

  • The water is all done with procedural textures.

Water is basically reflective as you look across it but transparent as you look into it . So use a gradient to increase transparency one way and reflection the other. Also you will need a little refraction to bend the shapes underwater.

Colour muddy green, with coloured reflection / highlights and coloured transparency.

2 Fractal noises for the bumps one to make waves and a crumple to break them up.

    hope this helps!

  • @martinrandle Fascinating water method there! Nicely done. How did you go about creating the normal-maps for the waves? I used to feed a few clouds into photoshop but it just doesn't look right.

  • AWESOME Work

  • is this real?

  • I`m 24years old and currently finishing up university. I love to draw or design some fantasy stuff with 3ds max, Auto CAD and photoshop although I don`t have any program to make such a good animation.

Anyway, the city sunset scene was truly gorgeous and matched with the music~ It seems like the sunset I saw when I was young like 4 or 5~

  • NICE !! with what software did u made this ???

  • Where are the people ?

  • I don't have the skills to make people! There are some birds flying around in the sunset section and I do actually appear in the video if you look carefully. However I filmed myself against a blue screen and used that as a texture map... You;ll have to look for it!

  • what is the software? 3ds max???

  • no! exactly Carrara PRO

  • The music makes me to imagine my hometown~ where my future will b

  • how old are you?

  • Great, but some of the fire and smoke animations would fit in soo much more better if you slowed them down a bit- looks great- high quality

    render time?

  • that fire barrel was blowing a tone of smoke lol, nice work tho

  • Very impressive!

  • nice. :)

  • Could this be done in Blender?

  • KelferMookie: I don't know Blender but I don't see why not. Make sure that on your textures you use lots of "noise" to dirty things up and make things look natural. use bump maps to make things irregular. Also when you model don't try and be too precise, it is the imperfections that make things look right.

  • ok thanks! :)

  • the back ally part was sick eh. architectural design was alrite. keep it up eh.

  • any1 can do it it's simple u need a program like swift3d, autoCAD 3dmax and so on.

  • Anyone? Really? I think its well done, wow..anyone eh?....anyone you say....doorknob.

  • I think you would surprise yourself at what you could create if you tried.

  • Having the tools to hand does not mean you have the ability to use them. But if you want to have a go I really do recommend that everyone who likes this has a try themselves. Programmes like VUE will give results easier than Lightwave or (Or Blender, 3Dmax, Maya etc.

Blender is free but quite difficult to learn, so DarkDean give it a try and post us your results - that is after all what youtube is for.

  • If you wanna see an amazing realistic 3-D City, c heck out Grand Theft Auto IV.

  • A-Fucking-Men.

  • Hell yes.

  • fuk fuk fukedy fuk brilliant 5 stars

  • fantastic ! ultra realistic looks a typical ugly western world city , keep it up

  • WOW

  • This is amazing work for one person to accomplish. You sir have good artistic skills and alot of patience :D

  • cool

  • bflorin09 and forthfriend it was all modelled and rendered in Lightwave.

    Thank you DarcyWLincoln.

  • Was this made in blender?

  • Nice work!

  • what program did you use?

  • thanks so much for the answers!

  • great ! re5pect

  • awesome that looks so good

  • Thanks everyone - as far as your questions

    1) It is completely rendered in Lightwave. I think I was using 8.5 at the time.

    2) The sun is a point light which is behind the buildings. I just tweaked all the lens flare settings until it looked about right.

    3) The sky is a photograph mapped to a back plane

  • what software

  • how did u make the sun at 0:30?

  • like GTA 4

  • WOW, that was amazing :D

    What program did u use?

  • How did you make that flare at 00:29?

  • nice music i love it

  • its look som gta 4 very good

  • its look som gta 4 very good

  • Very, very nice. I've made a few 3D cities myself. The models weren't bad, but I just can't get the lighting to give a realistic effect, such as your video. Nice textures too! Keep up the good work *****

  • fantastic! how did you do that?

  • very beautiful

  • AMAZING...super done!

    M O R E * P L E A S E

  • Very nice! Including the music too...

  • faa, increíble!!!

    FELICITACIONES..CONGRATULATIONS!

  • bey iy yook u vlong congrats 4 percervring

  • so is the whole thing rendered in LW

  • Amazing! What software did you use?

  • This is breathtaking stuff that you did. :)

  • This is Chicago. I recognise the hancock tower. Good work. I'm building a model (not graphics) but its a 21 year project, based on light effort. I need a life too. I'll post it on youtube next year. I have tried searching for personal city models and found very little. Only the Shanghai model.

  • a lot of the more distant buildings are very low res buildings based on real towers. It was easier than designing everything from scratch and time was an issue.

  • Thank you DaniDarko44. I don't know if LW was used on 24 but it might tell you on the official lightwave website. (company is called newtek)

    w w w . n e w t e k . c o m

They have a great community there - check it out.

I taught myself Lightwave. You have to put the hours in and read every tutorial going, these scenes took several months to build the models and texture it all. The textures and lighting are what make it all work. My models aren't that good and my animation is appalling!

  • This is lightwave? Fox tv show '24', one of the more visually artistic shows on tv, used lightwave for sfx in season 6 didnt it

  • Wow. this is the kind of work that inspires me to work in animation and keep learning

  • I saw your comment on the future cityscape, and in my opinion this is much better. Anyway I loved it, keep up the great work.

  • Wow, very well done.

  • Outstanding work, Martin, both in animation and music. The water looks so realistic.

  • hey martinrandle. its chavez from dans. This is really awesome. Good work!

  • Really nice work Mart. I remember seeing this when you first completed it for Kary Hartfield. A lot of time and care shines through. Lighting is moody and atmospheric :)

  • Stunning animation dude! Very nicely done! Very close to being just photorealistic!

  • This is the 3D cityscapes I did for the movie Kary Hartfield by Chase Kuertz. With some of the music.

The music was written using IKmultimedia;s Miroslav Philharmonik, and all the modelling texturing and animation was done in Lightwave.
