  • This girl is absolutely incredible

  • These super musicians should play some normal tunes with technical finesse so that us normal people trust them enough for us to be taken on the journey into the unknown. To that know it all in the top comment. Stop being such a fucking elitist. Most branches of human expertise requires a lot of knowledge in that field to appreciate the advanced developments. People are entitled to their view. Anyone who loved everything they didn't understand would be an idiot or just plain weird

  • 47 people cannot orgasm

  • Most of the 2nd track sounds like Goby, perhaps she is doing an intro on the fly?

  • Amazing. 1st track is Playing With Pink Noise, 3rd is Magazine. Does anyone know the name of the 2nd track?

  • I am much more interested in her thoughts than her guitar. What a beautiful person.

  • if only i can play like her... gosh she's so badass!

  • Kaki is sublime

  • Pure jealousy, that's all that the people complaining have in their minds. Kaki is not merely a musician, but an artist. She plays in non-traditional styles because, to her, traditional styles are boring and ceased to challenge her long ago.

  • This is truly awful. This is not a "Revolution in music". It's just awful.

  • @bobebobebob the only thing truly awful that I can see from you is your nickname and that alone is so bad that makes me wonder how can you even be qualified to make any type of statement here

  • haha kaki is so awesome!!!

  • of course, i am undoubtedly in love with her music, but i especially enjoyed how she defined infinity.

  • Comment removed

  • Horrible... waste of time.

  • @asskigdrive horrible? horrible? you are silly man you don´t have heart!

  • 45 disconnected brains!!!

  • how the hell did she make it onto a Guitar God list!!??!! her music is uncreative, the style is supposed to open you up to guitar and what it can do, her music sucks, if you want too watch someone for the style then watch someone like Preston Reed, but she's not a good songwriter, average at best =P

  • @mutley2209 can u play like her? If not, just keep it to yourself kay.

  • @dneffa yes i can, currently working on some Michael Hedges

  • @mutley2209 how's that Micheal Hedges goin on? What's the link? C'mon share with me....promise I will not complain. Forget what I said back 3 months ago

  • @dneffa not too bad, waiting on a new guitar end of January and a new camera before i put anything new up, working on his song Aura Muunta

  • @dneffa

Even if mutley can't he always has the right to give his opinions. Do you admire all singers better than you even if you know that you suck at singing!

  • @asskigdrive OK Thanks for reminding

  • @mutley2209 I dunno pal. Its one thing to not like her style, or her sound, which is understandable. But to say that she "sucks" and is "uncreative" is a bit of a stretch. She is definitely talented, she obviously knows her guitar backwards and forward. Just my little input.

  • shes still my fav guitarist!!

  • how do you watch this and say "i dont like this, definitely dislike". those 44 people are the reason i'm seriously loosing hope in humanity

  • reminds me of michael hedges, beautiful voicings

  • This could be the most amazingly beautiful thing I've ever seen.....

  • Where does she get the name 'kaki'?

    It means 'feet' in Malay.

  • @1000wrongdecisions her name is katherine but her father called ker kaki

  • ahh I just want to marry her.

  • lol I was trying enriching my mind and stuff by looking through TED videos and I found this!! HOLY SHIT KAKI MADE IT ONTO TED SO AWESOME GAAAAAH!!!! And she played Magazine, the song that first got me interested in solo guitar, in such an awesome way! Goby sounds so good acoustic too!!! Though why Playing With Pink Noise is so popular is beyond me, I feel like it sounds terrible live every time I hear it. Too bad her newer cd's aren't solo anymore, still love 'er though. Keep being awesome!

  • She's so awesome. I'd marry her, but I heard she's lesbian :(

I only knew the pink noise song, but all the others are amazing, possibly even better!

  • PHUCKING AWESOME!

  • I love her music... and her pants... and... her shoes!

  • Sincerely I love her voice, the way she speaks.

  • i sometimes find her fingernails creepy

  • jaj tiene pinta de loca!

  • i take it back, around 5:00 her second piece is very rad, and I'd like on my ipod right now!

  • If you're wondering, the song is called Goby :p

  • she's showing off technique, but I can't say it's the best in terms of listenability.

  • Brilliant !! ... When I was at university studying music, I noticed that the most criticism was directed to those who were the most original and the most talented, usually from the less talented in the campus. So to all the nit-picking nobodys who feel it neccisary to post negative comments about someone so talented, I look forward to reviewing the video responses of your performances that you will post so that we can all hear how great you are...

  • hey, I'm "music literate" and I love the way this sounds. Technique is music is technique is... we can go 'round and round all day. The sound, the texture, the movement, all of it is pleasing to the ear. Just because it lacks such mundane things as 'lyrics' doesn't mean it's music wank.

  • Comment removed

  • If music literate people don't appreciate this music the style, I don't think I want to become music literate.

  • @FlyByHarmony

i guarantee she is more music literate than anyone here on youtube. just because you are breaking traditional rules and setting your own guidelines doesn't mean you are musically illiterate.

  • and also how long is it going to take to convince people that technique and playing are not "jaw-dropping" unless the "Music" itself is.. music is what playing an instrument for - not the other way round

  • Just curious - have you heard her other music? Listen to her album Dreaming Of Revenge, on which I believe she plays every instrument. Its a wonderful album. She truly is a musician.

  • To be honest I think I've invested enough time and effort and money in music ever to pay for it again - the way I feel at the moment - I hope this changes - whenever I want to listen to a piece of music I just make up stuff on the piano..

  • why don't you post some of these harmonically innovative piano works of yours so that we don't have to make do with mere Kaki King?

  • In my experience, I find her music astonishing, because, I simply FEEL it. I could recognize the sound of her guitar among other 100 guitarists. It's all about personal interpretation and taste. I love the way she plays, it's almost like her way to write, her calligraphy. And she has to be a great person regardless her ability.

  • yeah but the music is boring - creatively speaking.. so.. it's annoying that they haven't had a musician on ted yet thats made me go - wow, that's amazing... or worth learning about - go listen to the Mahavishnu orchestra or Zappa or holdsworth (early gong's the best) to see why this is boring to me...

  • I already know all of them. Mahavishnu Orchestra played with Cynic if I remember well. It's just a matter of tastes.

  • didn't relly mean my comment to sound mean - as a consumer of music I am constantly asking the question - "what happened to interesting music?" - I guess this is an economic question - I mean if you look arround on here you'll find so much amazing music made before the 80's - was it home recording? - was it digital production? - just a watch a film of allan holdsworth from the 70's and compare the harmonic ambition to what it sounds like now

  • I guess that when it cames to TED we must really make sure the bar is extremely high and innovative. You're right

  • U been drinking the wrong thing

  • Agree but i reckon its prob more like 500,000 rather than 3 million. Although saying that I prob know about 10 people who can do it so maybe...

  • Check out Devin Townsend. He's worth paying money for.

  • The first song was just sounded like repetitive noise and i agree that this style has been done a lot better. Case point Andy Mckee

  • there's a reason to have "noise" in the name xD In my oppinion, kaki has applied very well her style/feeling into a well defined style.

  • @justinden99 i'm going to have to disagree with your take on kaki king, as she is, in my opinion, brilliant... but andy mckee truly is one of the most talented guitarists i've heard in a while. i'll give you that

  • oh god

think i can watch this forever

  • Great!!!

  • OMG everything has to be bigger better faster or else my shaky hands click away in five seconds. YouTube must be a giant orgasm in all ten dimensions simultaneouslyyyy

    I liked these songs, btw.

  • 11 dimensions if you include time!

  • This genre has been done time and time again, not to mention it has been done quite a bit better.

  • Totally agreed! that is the whole purpose of art right there, for when else is one free than when expressing oneself through art? Her art is clearly a very pure form of self-expression.

  • I don't understand why people judge her like this... She is obviously amazing musician not just a guitarist. I think the way she uses her guitar is necessary to express what she felt inside. Because she was drummer when she was young, her guitar sounds like drums, but it doesn't mean she leans on tricky style. You don't have to set in your thinking that guitar should be played in normal way. What is normal way really?? At least, for me, this was so natural and beautiful.

  • NOT what I was expecting. That was bad ass.

  • I'm no music nerd, but I'm going to go ahead and say this was quite enjoyable. Don't understand why everyone's getting so irritable about it.

  • Very impressive... she's pretty funny too. Not saying it's the greatest performance ever, but definitely enough to keep my attention

  • :P I really dislike this modern style of precussive upside down playing. Boring.

I'm sure I'll get slammed for saying this, but I can find hundreds of guitarists with more character.

  • i totally agree slap guitar is so tedious.

its more of a novelty party trick than a style. why not just get a drummer and play normal guiar?

  • C'mon guys don't be so ignorant as to imply that guitar is about whose style is better then whose. Bottom line is that its straight dynamical rhythmic talent that if you strived for the next 5 years probably could not achieve (judging by the stature of your comment). Everybody is a fucking critic. keep your shot minded opinions to yourself and off the scale.

  • I don't doubt your easily impressed (judging by the stature of your comment). I look for character in music and I think this style is very trendy and hip at the moment but its also very dull.

  • If you are going as far to say that this piece is "trendy or hip" then you truly have a twisted perception of what character in music really is. To judge an arrangement of notes by the style in which they are played is amazingly incompetent and shows only a lack of appreciation. You say easily impressed? Sure I guess you could say that. I would say appreciative of all art at best weather it measures up to my standard of interest or not. Set your preconceived notions aside. They ruin the song ©

  • My preception of trendy is that this style is similar to Netwon Faulkner, dreadlocks, pre-torn clothes, pounding his guitar.

"To judge an arrangement of notes by the style in which they are played is amazingly incompetent and shows only a lack of appreciation." I thought I made it obvious that I have a lack of appreciation for this style. Also, its absurd to say I am "amazingly incompetent" if I don't enjoy arbitrary "arrangements". You are saying its "amazingly incompetent" to judge style.

  • Haha wow man calm down. Obviously your not an artist yourself.

  • That's like asking why a painter would paint in color when they could paint in black and white. Or why a band would have a drummer when they could have a drum machine. Since when have the arts ever stuck to any set of rigid conventions?

  • whats the last song she plays?

  • unsure. trying to find out myself

  • Last song is Magazine, I believe.

  • fucking amazing man

    I really liked that

  • Excellent craftmanship.

  • this girl is awesome

  • from the instant she starts playing at 4:25 i completely lose myself. what a beautiful piece

  • yeah, goby is a sweet awesome song

  • whats the name of that song playing at 4:25

  • @abhineet123451 the name of the second song she does is Goby! does anyone know what the name of the final (third) song is?

  • @Jsonn85 The name of the third song she does is Magazine ! ;)

  • King needs may need some more philosophical education, but but she fucking pwns the guitar.

  • It's true that everyone judges music differently--so, while I enjoyed this a lot, I understand that some may hate it. I just wish they would criticize her as a musician and not as a person. Also, though this is very technical stuff, some parts are quite expressive (and evoked certain emotions from me).

  • I do have to agree with the some of the comments, that it is still mostly a showcase of her abilities. Which is fine and impressive, but the idea/statement is missing.

  • The idea and statement is there. She's basically described her life through the guitar. I can go on and on about hippy bullshit but I won't.

Just listen to the different sets of the song. You can easily hear a hightened progression from innocent childhood to hectic young adulthood.

  • THE most LEGENDARY female guitarist in EXISTENCE.

  • previous comment was on wat vinovampire said

  • that's utter rubbbish..music cannot be put inside a box and be classified as gud or bad..certain music sounds bad to some ppl...my parents all music but classical is utter noise and should be banned..as for feeling all artists express themselves differently....to conclude...music is like a human being...sum u like, sum u don't, but that doesn't mean sum other wouldnt or shuldnt, or whether the music lacks soul or not...coz thats all down to personal judgement

  • that's right..spelling cannot be put inside a box and be classified as gud or bad..certain spellings sound bad to some ppl...my parents all grammer but classical is utter noise and should be banned..as for feeling all writers express themselves differently....to conclude...spelling is like a human being...sum u like, sum u don't, but that doesn't mean sum other wouldnt or shuldnt, or whether the spelling lacks soul or not...coz thats all down to personal judgement

  • what are you talking about? spelling... like.. ABC?

  • Sooooooooooooo...hot.

  • The following was most likely all said before, but it bears repeating:

Simply amazing, it's euphoric to listen to. Also she looks so much like Johnny Depp I wasn't sure for a minute.

  • i love her so much, amazing style

  • If this is her best work, all I can say is: what a waste of talent. Clearly, she has a highly developed technical skill, but there's just no feeling or substance during this performance. I try to go to two live shows a week, ranging from improv jazz to hardcore/punk to reggaeton and beyond. Give me a lesser talent with an idea or a point of view (instrumental or lyrical) or any kind of feeling, anything but this noise. We might as well train little children in sweatshops to play these songs.

  • Evidently you have no idea. Just because she doesn't sway to music or close and squint her eyes doesn't meen she doesn't feel the music. If you simply listen to her playing the dynamics that she expresses through her fingers is amazing. Yes, her performance can be a bit bland visually, but her music is far beyond what most musicians who have "feeling" or are trying to express a "point of view" have. I'm sorry, but I disagree.

  • Why not train little children in sweatshops to play these songs? That would be nice.

  • What a very very strange opinion. I mean fair enough you dont like the music, obviously not everyone can like EVERYTHING. But to say she has no feeling or substance during this performance... i just dont see where thats coming from. i see a great deal of feeling. I'm half wondering if you watched the whole thing. "we might as well train little children in sweatshops to play these songs". i dont actually know what you mean by that comment, you'll have to explain.

  • what vinovampire said made perfect sense to me. i agree

  • You have got to be fucking kidding me. Clearly your eye for inner expression is SHIT.

  • She is good but not as good as "Rodrigo y Gabriela" !!

  • Thanks eclectic9eel for taking me to Kaki King's wickedly awsome guitar riffs.

  • a genuine Art expression that I have the pleasure to witness.. :)

  • Standing and applauding! i am so jealous. Absolutely amazing.

  • Incredibly different! bravo!

  • she makes sounds ive never heard on a guitar before

    amazing

  • you're pretty ignorant to say this isn't music.

  • Everyones Soul is touched differently by art.

  • Richard22884:

Perhaps your appreciation of music is decidedly narrow.

  • you felt nothing because your soul is encased in a shell of ignorance.

take a break from leaving these obnoxious comments. Use the time to practice your guitar, and PLEASE broaden your musical intake.

Yes The Beatles are great, and so is Weezer, but there is so much more out there than pop/rock.

go watch "Ambush from Ten Sides" (it's about a battle in ancient china) I really like Liu Fang, if you want to see a musician with really fast fingers. hope that helps.

  • You're absolutely right about Liu Fang, she rocks that pipa like a true genius. Wow, that truly is some great stuff, thanks for the tip. This kaki be-atch still sucks big time though. Sorry...

  • You probably think Kurt Cobain was a great guitarist too

  • i know nothing about guitar but i just tell what i see.

    her fingers moves like centipede!!

  • I think I'm in love! xD

  • A truly amazing guitarist...well done!

  • She would match up nicely with Tool imho.

  • I like your idea.

  • I was thinking this. A combination of the two would melt worlds and shatter galaxies.

  • she's worthy of an ovation !!! (pun intended)

  • FAIL

  • blaaaa blaaa lets just say she rocks, The last Riff was pretty cool

  • Marry me, girl with musical intellect. Musical intellect is a vague term but "musical talent" is vaguer I suppose. Perhaps "musical talent" could be defined as - the brain's ability to recognize mathematical relationships contained within the air waves. Obviously, "musical talent" is brain power (intelligence). That being said, any girl is more attractive to me if she demonstrates her intelligence through a musical instrument. Including voice, but female virtuoso guitarists are rare jewels

  • Is it strange to say she has the "look" of genius about her? Anyways, her small frame is just big enough to tote around her very large brain and enormous guitar - A person who has found her true calling. Beautiful! Thanks, Tedtalks and Youtube!

  • Ovation guitar, gotta love 'em...

  • you said it! i love them ovations.

  • crazy

  • love the second song best,

and the bit about her height was funny!

  • *Guitar Godess

  • she's no physicist! But an amazing guitarist

  • its not egotistic. she was making a point and she laughed after it. and she IS physically hot...not that that matters when it comes to GENIUS

  • if you believed that death is just a tunnel we go through to reach to after-life, you will know that every moment counts!

  • it was a joke >_> you retard she's an amazing guitarist and she was merely interacting with the crowd >_>

  • very nice

  • such good taste in sound!

  • Cute personality, just a lil afraid of those right hand nails.

  • lol, they're not nails, she puts things on her nails that are used like picks. :)

  • Out of the video, I only enjoyed the second song, and the little tidbit she threw in about her height.

  • We must have the technology by now, where guitarists don't have to re-tune between *every* *damn* *song.* That's really starting to get on my nerves.

  • Design new strings that don't stretch out, and make sure along with that you design tuning keys that stay locked in place, but move when you want to tune the strings.

  • Nothing about technology... everything about feeling.

  • Every re-tune is starting to get on our nerves because you are a fucking maniac.

    By the way, she's amazing!!!!!

  • Bet she has real strong fingers. Bet she beat Chuck Norris by flicking him in the nuts, mid air in his roundhouse kick...

  • Never.

  • Thats just Blasphemy...Chuck Norris' balls cut steel.

  • ppl can say what they want about this brilliant music or watever you wanna call it

my opinion is i just dont like it

i wouldn't listen to this more than once

maybe not even once al the way

    anyone agree?

  • not me

  • Needs more cowbell.

  • I don't agree, but I don't think you should get thumbs down just because you have an opinion. And you were nice about it too.

It's definitely not for everybody. I like it though.

  • math-bard... me like a lot.

  • female my ass. she looks like a human being.

  • ??? A female human... (granted, many nerds wouldn't know)

  • I have to agree with some of the previous comments, although yes, this sounded nice, yes she is indeed like a modern bard, the music is nothing earth-shattering.

  • part 1

    Superb guitarist, also extremely attractive.

However... Two things are missing: First, originality.

The overall sound and ambiance she communicates come directly from Michael Hedges and the Windham Hill gang from almost 30 years ago. Since then countless guitarists, many of them excellent, have explored that domain. As far as the tapping technique, that too shows nothing new beyond the aforementioned sources (and you can add Stanley Jordan there too.)

  • yeah probably right but...

Theyre dead and music is still alive and people who want to play it also those who want to hear it. Music like all other art stuff need evolution. Evolution consists on that what was before. Some people prefer live music not playing records to end of their life.

Same thing you could say about such artists like Elvis Presley and others whom are admired by milions.

  • part 3

Having mentioned all this I must add that none of my criticism is meant

to belittle the enjoyment anybody else may derive from Kaki's playing, only to suggest that a lot of what we're listening to here can be traced back to other creative individuals, who possessed an fleeting and fiery ingredient not found here, and that is originality.

  • agreed.
