25+ years on and they can't do it proper justice. Although this song isn't their worst re-creation, the high kings just don't "get it". They are manufactured, just like celtic woman, by marketers with a big broadway show in mind. As such everything they do is more bling than feeling.

  • CHORUS:

    And we’ll all go together

    To pluck wild mountain thyme

    All around the blooming heather

    Will ye go lassie, go?

  • I will build my love a bower

    Near yon pure crystal fountain

And on it I will pile

All the flowers of the mountain

    Will ye go lassie, go?

    CHORUS

  • Oh, the summertime is coming

And the trees are sweetly blooming

    And the wild mountain thyme

    Grows around the blooming heather

    Will ye go lassie, go?

    CHORUS

  • i feel like this song is telling me to cry :P

  • @Gmansters I get the same feeling every time I hear it as well..

  • I love all Irish music. Celtic Thunder, Celtic Woman, and these guys. If anyone can give me more Irish singers, that would be awesome. :)

  • christy moore

  • You'll Never Beat the Irish when it comes to Music :D I can name many more irish bands/artists that are making names for themselves such as The Saw Doctors, Christy Moore, Snow Patrol!

  • no matter where its from, its a beautiful piece to listen to. anyone who preforms is has a wonderful sense of music.

  • It's obviously American origin, nothing to do with the Celtic football team or their culture. It refers to "Mountain Time" (7 hours behind GMT) that applies around Denver, Colorado area.

  • @christoir246 Well that's not a very nice comment, I've given it a thumbs down! You are correct though, it does refer to mountain thyme, not eastern or pacific thyme.

  • @peto0101 you are a fanny

  • @craigham93 Yes it is a lovely tune, I'm a great fan of it

  • @peto0101 Its Wild Mountain Thyme, Its a plant nothing to do with time

  • I'm not of any sort of Celtic descent, but I have a strong background in music. And The High Kings have more musicality than many other comparable groups. Their vocal blending is absolutely amazing, and the accompaniment is perfectly suited. I tip my hat to you, High Kings, and I thank Pandora Radio for introducing me to you!

  • i remember watching this on tv and it still makes me cry......this was my girlfriends favorite song. RIP Jenny McNully and all may who ever reads this comment who loves Irish songs : Keep loving what you love with people who love it with you! LET LIVE YOUR SPIRIT RUN!!!!

  • Someones been to the Aran Islands! I saw them live the December before last, fell asleep for the first half due to alcohol consumption, the second half was great though.

  • i love and like all their songs but this 1 inparticular keep up the great work lads your brill

  • 2.35 great She is there in some other world were only SHE is.I bet she had a great evening

  • Ahh "Wild Mountain Thyme" A well known Scottish tune. very well sung though.

  • no matter what background one has, why can't people see that just because we want to hold on to our heritage we can be proud of it but don't have to hate anyone because of it . It is history and we don't have to repeat it.

  • poor this video, so few viewers, so few people know of this, so few have got a chance to get in touch with these true musics, these true arts, poor them!

  • If i ever marry, I will play this at my wedding and dance with the new wife.

  • Ich war gestern in der Balver Höhle und durfte die High Kings live erleben - einfach traumhaft.

  • very few people in Vietnam know of Celtic music, and very few among them fell in love with this wonderful culture, I'm proud to be one of them.

  • I'm Belgian, and for me it's just a lovely Gaelic song...

  • So let´s just say for the record, that Irishman Francis McPeake was at least "inspired" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill. Any proud Scotsman might call it "stealing", any proud Irishman might deny the connection between "The Braes of Balquhidder" and the "Wild Mountain Thyme". As for me, I call both works and artists "creative genius", a worthy offspring of the proud Celtic culture common in both Irish and Scottish history. Btw, I am neither. Why not try being proud without feeling superior?!

  • @ConQuistador86 i am from both Irish and Scottish decent... and no matter what, they are all still gorgeous works of art and should be mandated for everyone to listen too, especially those dumb kids who buy rap CD's

  • @SneakyBastrd59 word... ;-)

  • @MrArratoon It's Irish, written by an Irishman from Belfast, and it's the Scots that rip off OUR culture, the Scots of the Highlands are an Irish tribe anyway and the other lot are just "I can't believe they're not Englishman".

  • @MrArratoon its Irish !! we want nothing from u brits so put back on ur sash and fuck off

  • @MrArratoon Irish and Scottish are both celtic. Labeling it as scottish or irish is stupid just accept the fact that it's a song and listen to it. Btw It's irish for any future arguements and/or retaliations

  • @MrArratoon well.. I think this message is not for me hahahaha my youtube account is open to whoever uses this computer, I guess my irish boyfriend comment on this vid.. unfortunately he's not gonna be able to "strike back"... that wiil be funny... but I will leave at that! p.s. you sound like Bill O'Reilly... =P

  • aaaaaaa that's were the sheep went nice touch boys

  • I am half Mexican and half English and I love Irish folk songs and THIS ONE IS AMAZING!

  • These guys should be so so much bigger and have billions of views not just hundreds of thousands because they are so incredible I would love to hear them all day on my tele and stuff.

  • I am brown pride all the way but I love this music and the heritage it brings

  • Comment removed

  • @MrArratoon

This is not a delightful 'old' scottish song. It is an Irish folksong called 'wild mountain thyme' written in 1957 by Irishman Francis McPeake. It is commonly, but incorrectly called "will ye go lassie go"

And these guys do a very nice version of it..

  • Hell with it, it's all fantastic music. Music isn't supposed to be discriminatory towards one ethnicity or another. Honest to Betsy. Enjoy the music, stop getting upset with what ethnicity the singers are, this ain't the dark ages.

  • who's the fiddler?

  • ...........Great Irish song.......

  • @Jorosscollector01 and neither is Danny Boy written by an English man

  • The annaying thin now is that I have to go or I'll miss my bus but I can't go until I've heard the last note...

  • love this

  • It's a IRISH SONG with SCOTTISH LYRICS it was adapted to the tune!!

  • Sing this song in choir but everyone thinks this song is stupid when its a really a great song!

  • Fond memories of childhood singing. So many versions - see the notes on wikipedia... search for "Wild_Mountain_Thyme"

  • The words "lassie" and "ye" are Scots, not Irish English....!!!

  • @DiamondCutter19 Sorry have to correct you but 'lassie' and ye are used in Yorkshire and some parts of Lincolnshire. Both counties are in England but close the the border between England and Scotland so some 'slang ' is used in both Countries

  • This song is so soothing to me. I was introduced to this group about 4 days ago, and i can't get enough of them. Wonderful. Just wonderful

  • @jmkdreamer Welcome to your new addiction, may I suggest getting Memory Lane?

  • @DevilKadams I have every intention of getting it... Just as soon as i get the money:-)

  • @jmkdreamer This version is great too:

Will Ye Go Lassie Go Scotland Music Celtic Music songs folk scottish traditional

    Check it out!

  • @jmkdreamer I went to their concert in Boston Mass, It was the best concert I have ever been to, I've seen them twice, So amazing, :)

  • It's a SCOTTISH song.

  • I´m astonished: It´s really good, similar than Liam Clancy & Makem and Co. It´s a imitation, but a good one.

  • Don't get it WHY people dislike all your songs !! I mean like there absoluty GREAT .. Love them & love u all also !!! :) xxxx

  • I can tell you that i cried after this, because of this heart warming song.

  • God this is awful

  • @tony10396861 dude, thats really disrespectful.

  • @Mayhemblackful Its only an opinion. I think this is an awful version of a great song

  • @tony10396861 alright, that makes little bit more sense.

  • Did they just sing this back to front? End verse 1st - 1st verse last?

  • i think i might be part irish cause every time i hear an irish classic like this i feel like drinkin

  • @salvationarmyfan13 awk quit ur lying ur only sayin you fell like drink cuz u think u wanna be a part of the best crowd about Ireland

  • im a 17 year old iowa boy and im proud to say i cried after this.

  • I think the Clancy Brothers would really like this version...one of my fav's

  • I'm Irish/Italian, so i'll be kickin' my own ass tonite. Cheers!

  • My all time favorite Irish song. Great joy High Kings

  • Beautiful! Gave me goosebumps thank you for sharing!

  • long live Newfoundland! and all its magical music ha-ok but look at the history !!

  • @wisers001 I don't understand your comment. Long live Newfoundland! Absolutely. I wouldn't live anywhere else. What do you mean by "look at the history"? And BTW, I totally agree with you regarding the musical talent here on the island. It's unbelievable.

  • Saw The High Kings in Cincinnati last Friday, March 4th. What a special show that was for me, my father and daughter. We are proudly Irish!!! Beautiful, just beautiful. They are on their US tour - don't miss them!

  • Typical, they miss two verses our,Have a listen to the Furies ''real''version.

  • @wglovett have a listen to your own whining.

  • I also noticed Aoife Clancy sitting in the crowd on this song. My family and I listen to Cherish The Ladies, and still have CDs from when she was a founding member of the group. Lovely voice!

  • In re-watching this video, I just realized that you can see Finbarr Clancy's sister, Aoife Clancy, who is herself an Irish folk singer, at 2:54. (Finbarr is the one with the guitar and the one who sings the first verse of this song.)

  • is this a Scottish song ?

  • wonderful song thanks for the posting

  • Beautiful! Looking forward to seeing The High Kins for the first time ever at the Great American Irish Fesival this summer!

  • Finbarr -I thought , at least YOU might understand this. Damn

  • I love this song, the band, and am addicted to their album.

  • well said pan42, love from ireland

  • Nice sweaters

  • @TACarhart - I grew up listening to the Clancy Brothers/Tommy Makem. I think I knew this song before I knew my ABC's. This was probably my favorite of their songs.

  • @sandinmyears1 I love you, because you mentioned The Clancy Brothers. I will be gay for you bro.

  • It seems The High Kings don't have the brogue I would hear with the Clancy's or the Dubliners. Is this a generational thing? I love to listen to The High Kings so this isn't a criticism of them. Just an observation.

  • @TACarhart - "Och!" My ggggrandfather was from Antrim and he married a lass from Scotland. ;)

  • Finbarr has one of the purest, most beautiful voices I have ever heard!!!

  • @ambmick - Oops. I meant to hit reply and hit the thumb down instead. Sorry. I was going to reply that Brian Dunphy's voice sounded so nice at 1:57+

  • Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful... watching the old dames in the audience singing along brings a tear to your eye...

  • I saw this live.

  • I think that's Finbarr Clancy's sister Aoife Clancy at 2:52

  • tears... Its very beautiful... wow *.*

  • This isnt a Scottish song, as much as they like to think it is! This was written by William McPeake a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The scots have a similar version and this isnt it!

  • Clancy Bros jumpers!!!

  • @EireGoon - Indeed! That was a great moment in the show when the jumpers ("sweaters" to us Yanks) were brought out. And on the choruses here, you can catch just a bit of the timbre of the Clancys, esp. Tom and Paddy.

  • @EireGoon -- Whenever I watch these lads I can't help but think of how much Finbar looks like his Uncle Liam -- guitar and all.

  • @tribcz - He does!!

  • @CompVid101 My guess is that they are Aran sweaters, which makes it even more special.

  • @cynsha - Indeed they are in style , though according to the late Paddy Clancy, they were knitted by Tipperary's Mother Clancy from Aran wool.

  • Irish or Scottish, we have the same D.N.A.

    Great song, great performance.

  • Nice rendition..but the song is in fact Scottish

  • I played this through some B&W speakers earlier today to listen to while tidying up

I ended up sitting down, tuning the volume up, closing my eyes and singing along

  • Heard a better version at The bloody Stream pub Howth Dublin Ireland. By Celtic Symphony around a table they sit and entertain on Monday nights. Having just moved to Ireland I walked into The Bloody Stream and had a magical moment. A must on your Life's to do list.

  • im here tears running down my face ,my dads song passed away april this year .great version

  • I understood this was a Scots song. Blooming Heather, Lassie, Scots words not Irish.?.

  • @angelf1re

even if it is scottish , irish people do say lassie, and we also have heather???, ireland and scotland both very celtic countries

  • Whenever I think of Home, I play this song :(

  • Love the sweaters, my grandfather bought one in Ireland when he went decades ago.

  • Sie sind einfach die Besten.

  • I am an American with Scottish ancestry and to answer the question of fifthdaughter, no, not really. Pride of the Celtic people runs deep and sometimes that such conversations just come with the territory. We share a common heritage and the depth of emotion and the feelings that come with these songs evokes such emotions that it really doesn't matter if they are Scottish or Irish, we are all Celts. Just take those jovial disagreements as a part of that and all will be well. Cheers!

  • @ZeitgeistWI You forgot the original Celts - the Welsh. Another lovely thing about the Celts is that they never wrote anything down. History was transmitted orally, with some story-tellers having over one thousand tales to tell. It is from this that our heritage remains and our love of the spoken word, whether just that or sung defines us wherever we live. Hwyl fawr.

  • @howhenmac1 You are right my friend, I did and I have naught to blame it on by the passion of the moment, and perhaps just a wee bit of senility in my advancing years. LOL! Take care my friend, Cheers!

  • @ZeitgeistWI Thanks for your courteous response.Having lived through several wars, I can understand the age question.

At the risk of turning this into a Twitter, if you call up "Myfanwy" in UTube you'll get a feel for the less recognisable elements of this Celtic island. Incidentally, a recent DNA survey by Oxford University shows the UK to be still 85% celtic, genetically.

  • @howhenmac1 the origonal celts were infact central europeans that migrated to the fringes of europe

  • @DamoT666

Interestingly, Britain retains predominantly Celtic genes (85%). The strain of Celtic DNA can be traced to seven females (the so-called 'daughters of Eve), who came out of Africa some fifty-thousand years ago. The population divided some North and East and some West. They trace the Celtic genes to those who came West to Iberia and, at the end of the Ice Age, travelled northward along the Atlantic coast entering what today are the island of Britain, but were then joined to Europe.

  • @ZeitgeistWI i'll drink to that!

  • Oh c'mon lads 'n lasses - we're all part o' this big green ball aren't we? We're all a little irish, a little scottish and a little celtic - and VERY human - at least somewhere in our pasts! Pass the ale around an' lets raise a toast to the High Kings!

  • @2Scribble Well said I am a little bit Irish a little bit scottish and a little bit rangers, ah well 2 out of 3 aint bad. There aren't too many NI prods who listen to this music but i am glad to say i am one of them. Politics and religion suck but music like football can be appreciated and bring people together. Mines a guinness by the way!!

  • @nicormp I'm a Southern Prod and couldn't be more proud to be Irish. God I love that country.

  • @MrThingy3 The only reason the North won the Civil War is because they had more Irish.

  • Very Good !

    Hello, from France !

  • Hey Slugger:

To really get the feeling on page #95 - "Mantilla Lady..."

crank-up the volume and enjoy the "Concert under the stars"

    Love from your cool Daddy!

  • this songs is based on a SCOTTISH poem written in the 1700's THE BRAES O' BALQUHIDDER. look up the poem, some of the lyrics were changed. heres a verse from the poem Will ye go lassie, go, To the braes o' Balquhidder? Where the blaeberries grow, 'Mang the bonnie bloomin' heather. I will twine thee a bower By the clear siller fountain, An' I'll cover it o'er Wi' the flowers o' the mountain; .

  • I love being irish and celt music I'll always hold dear to me

  • Those are Arran sweaters. Tradition has it that each family had a unique pattern. This was so that they might identify their menfolk who were lost at sea when they subsequently washed ashore.

  • Beautiful

  • This is "our song" - played the Joan Baez version over and over when we were first married, Scottish or Irish, who cares, a beautiful song

  • this a classical irish song

  • I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sorry to say but its a classic Scottish song.but we are all celts anyway

  • Sorry to say but its a classic Scottish song.

  • who cares its celt and its beautiful

  • I'm Irish, And i absolutely love this song! Best song Ever!

  • i got one of those sweaters for Christmass, i absolutely love it!

  • My dad loves classic Irish music. I just bought their DVD (in concert)

  • There is a lot of cross-over between Irish and Scottish music. Despite wars and conflicts, there is a common heritage. I do think, however that Robert Tannahill of Paisley deserves credit on this one, even if the lyrics are not his original ones.

  • always takes me back to a very special and wonderful time in my youth and just makes me long even more to someday be able to return to that place of my youth and first love, I've heard this done by many groups including my own, But these guys do it the best, REALLY TAKES ME BACK!! and can make a guy homesick real fast........

  • The English like Irish music. That's why they try so hard to hang onto them. They like the Irish Pubs as well, pints are colder :>)

  • Ahahaha, Irish sweaters XD

  • Who gives a fuck where it comes from, Scotland or Ireland? We're all Celts and as we all know "A Celt is a Celt is a Celt!" ARAIGH LIBH!!!!!

  • Written by William McPeake from the wonderful musical McPeake family of Belfast. Music is universal and has no borders so put your nationalistic nonsense to one side and enjoy it for what it is, a beautiful rendition of a beautiful song.

  • @pan42 but it was based on a auld scottish poemTHE BRAES O' BALQUHIDDER

google the poem. mcpeake changed some of the lyrics. so there ya go

  • @gaelscot Come on we're all Celts

  • @pan42 erm, music is incredibly nationalistic. Composers are historically fiercely proud of their nations and dedicated many works to their homelands.

  • We shouldn't fight over whether or not it is Irish or Scottish, because I think we would all agree it is better than English music!
