I'm just a street hip hop dancer, so I don't know much about ballet but I think this dancer is really graceful and exquiste!

(and for anyone that reads this comment and wonders what a street urchin like me is doing watching ballet on youtube) I'm planning on signing up for a dance class at my school next year to expand and learn all kinds of other dance styles because I love and respect all dances haha!

I danced for the Joffrey for 8 years, studied at SAB, and now teach. This young lady is lovely. Does her video say "I'm the greatest dancer on earth!"? Does it say, everyone should do fouettes this way? Does it say everyone else should bow down to her? No. If you don't have anything nice to say about her, don't say anything at all.

different kinds of techniques have different philosophies on whether the arms are in front of the chest or the belly button. at Pennsylvania ballet, where this woman is from, they are rooted in the Balanchine technique which teaches the arms to be above the belly button and closer to the chest during turns.

the arms are supposed to be in like that so that when u turn with a male dancer, ur arms don't hit him, the arms are fine and do u no how hard it is to turn liek that? i suck when i do fouettes in demi's!!! although i only just started them...

I don't think people get it.

Your arms aren't supposed to flow like crazy when you do fouettes - what it is about is finding your center and sticking to it. Add to this that you're not supposed to travel. The arms are SUPPOSED to be strong.

There is a nice article on the dancer in this video, Gabrielle Yudenich, in this month's Pointe Magazine. She's a rising star at Pennsylvania Ballet and is praised in the magazine, and in many other reviews, for her lovely port de bras. The way she uses her arms in this clip is reflective of her schooling and is a matter of taste; there's nothing "wrong" with it; this is all subjective.

umm actually, the tighter your arms are, the more turns you do. So her arms were fine. they were strong in second, and in first they were tight so she could turn. duh

I know right. People need to pay attention more in class or something because my teacher told us once you get into doing more than one turn hold your ams in closer so you can turn faster and do more. Its just like ice skating. There arms are tucked in. And there going really fast and doing tons of turns. Its just like, common sense.
