hammer-ons and pull-offs may be easier to play, but they don't sound as heavy as just down picking the entire intro. If you have to pull-off/hammer-on that intro, you shouldn't even be playing this song.

You could still play the same notes from drop D. Except everything on C is two frets up. So if you played 2 5 2 3 2 on drop D, you would play 4 7 4 5 4 on drop C and it would sound the same.
