The cable company in my area carries a channel called FamilyNet and they show reruns of this on there. I have to watch it every night, I love it...and Ty is very easy on the eyes. ;)

what a throwback to the 70's.. that lame theme,sound effects, the host, announcer, cheap prizes with the grand prize very hard to win. At least more intelligent than stupid wheel of fortune which i never watch, Jeopardy is the Merv gameshow I prefer.

By the way, Drew Carey is bombing, big time..

You look at everything the wrong way (except the Carey part).

This was a throwback to the '80s, as this was used for prize cues on Wheel of Fortune from 1989-1995.

TY TREADWAY, BY ALL MEANS!!!!!! Joey FAT-ONE is part of why I don't watch "The Singing Bee"...I like Wayne Brady better ("Don't Forget the Lyrics", which is better than "Bee" anyway). But as for Crosswords, Ty is pretty doggone good. I don't watch soaps, but he used to be on "One Life to Live." ;-)

The Singing Bee is way better because it is more like the clasic game shows than Lyrics is.

Lyrics is just a bad meeting of Millionaire & The Singing Bee.

Well Lyrics actually seems to parallel 5th grader better, due to the payout ladder structure being eerily similar, plus the "Million Dollar Song" (like the 1M question on 5th)...plus both shows are taped in adjacent studios. Besides, Wayne's a better host and Joey sucks...maybe I just don't like NSYNC, LOL (Joey used to be part of that dopey group)

The opening theme for Merv Griffin's Crosswords is "Buzzword," they use this theme as a prize cue for "Wheel of Fortune" bonus round prize cue for cars in the mid '80's to early '90's.

The opening theme is also similar to the late '70's CBS game show "Double Dare" (Alex Trebek) whose theme music would later be used on "Card Sharks" (Jim Perry) which debuted in '77 on NBC.

I believe that for the shows now being produced, they have scrapped the "Crossword Getaway" and replaced them with a couple more "Crossword Extras". Also, in the bonus round, the prize is $5000 and a tropical vacation rather than just $2000 and a trip.

That's right. But for the first few weeks of the show offering 5K and a trip (no more Crossword Getaways), they also awarded an XBOX360 gaming system to the winner...plus the "EXTRA" clues during regular game play were sponsored by XBOX. Now, they no longer have XBOX as a sponsor...not that I'd want a damned XBOX anyway LOL.

So they know the contestant knows how to spell the word correctly and to see if it fits. Or sometimes people say the words differently and need spelling to confirm.

In case you're not up to "Merv Griffin's Crosswords," it is similar to the 1976 game show "Double Dare." The difference here is that the theme from "Merv Griffin's Crosswords" was previously used on "Wheel Of Fortune" (hense the show's creator) while the theme from "Double Dare" (hosted by Alex Trebek) was later used on "Card Sharks."
