@GoblinsnHobbits Eh? How has SWTOR failed? It was, and still is, the fastest growing subscription MMO in history. Not too sure what your reasoning behind why it's a "horrible piece of shit", but I doubt it's anything worth noting. Go and play your Guild Wars 2. Owaitlolol. It's not out yet, nor anywhere close to being out. :|
Yet the evidence to your claim is another claim that has no evidence? What planet do you live on? Look up the server populations, kiddo. The servers became larger because Bioware expanded them more to allow more players to make characters on servers. They've stated this numerous times. The player numbers don't lie. They've been increasing and they still will. Go hate on another game you're bad at.
@GoblinsnHobbits Lol, wait. Did you even play SWTOR? Or are you just taking blind shots in the dark at a game you only tried in beta or early stages? Cute. Your opinions are invalid, and still will be unless you can provide any kind of factual evidence to your misguided fallacies. Gotta love kids, no idea how to form their own, well-researched, opinions. Unless you hold their hand, of course. Want me to hold your hand?
People who play it don't understand how soulless the game is. EVERYTHING is flawed in swtor. I agree with goblins. WoW is repetetive and sucks to imo.
It's about the art direction, not realism vs cartoon. Take for example Turok 2. Turok 2 looks fantastic even to this day. Yet Turok's graphics aren't cartoony, they're gritty and dark.
Community happens. WoW didn't do anything special to cultivate it besides making a well made game.
mmos fail cause ive had to pay 65 quid on swtor 45 for the game and it wont let me play my free 30 day trial so ive forked out another 20 for the recurring subscription.. brilliant
@ConstantmimeDK not at all I can't run stwor on my pc when it was on beta I played in other pc, but is just because my pc suck (ati x700, I need minimum the ati x1**** )
@ConstantmimeDK Arenanet uses graphic cards to test the game/at demos that are so old that they have to buy the graphic cards from ebay. So yes, you will be able to run GW2 on a crappy pc. But the game also looks absolutely stunning. I don't really know the details, but it is about programming. GW2 only loads that part of the world where you are in (graphically I mean, not chat etc) so it has lower system requirements.
The GW2 developers actually buy video cards off EBay to test their game on, to make sure if you have a 4-year old video card, you'll still be able to play. The AESTHETIC of GW2 is great, but that doesn't mean you'll need a huge amount of computing power to play it... quite the opposite actually!
Wow, this was a very great video. Was enjoyable to watch from start to finish, especially the finish where you state your opinion of GW2. Can't wait for it either :)
Why no mention of EVE Online? EVE is a game that is successful and its been around longer than WOW. It does not have cartoony graphics in fact its just the opposite. The great thing about EVE is its one server. There are not servers for different regions of the world. Every day you encounter people who speak different language and live in a different country. You must overcome these differences. The most common way is to just kill the other person but that's beside the point.
@TAGsten EVE Online still looks good today, and they constantly update it and tweak it. The gameplay is good, but tends to favor a certain population.
@McBlemmen Totally agree with you. I don't play any more do time constraint but i still watch evemon and get on and update skills. Some of my best gaming moments where playing eve.
an MMO is nothing without its community. without the want or need to depend on other players to aid you in whatever you do on your character, you are playing nothing but a standard RPG with the ability to interact with people. that's it, plain and simple. i'm returning to WoW with a new found perspective of online gaming. pray for the best! :]
MMOs fail because they take their ideas from other MMOs which imo is just a sign of stupidity since the people started copying others cause they cant create their own gameplay and gamestyle. For example Blizzard made Wow an easier game when they saw other MMOs gamestyles and making a game easier is most of the time the wrong choice since it is no longer as intense as it once was and is a childs play to play through it.
this isn't a diss on the video or anything i just though it was kind of odd how you listed all the points that make an MMO great which included Cartoony Graphics, lower computer requirements, responsive gameplay, good combat animations, and Content, then you said you were really excited about GW2, now while im not gonna say GW2 is gonna suck, I think its gonna be a good game though I am going for SWTOR myself, its just that GW2 only has half of those requirements that you listed.
@w2pi cartoony graphics and lower computer requirements, just from what i've seen it seems it will require a decent amount more computer power than SWTOR. I'm not trying to steer you away from GW2 it does seem like a good game and I know i'll be playing it, along with SWTOR, I just thought it was kind of odd.
Of course "why" is subjective, but in my personal opinion: Lack of a community, lack of challenge and no death penalty, and the fact that there's a linear experience, with virtually no free for all pvp or any sandbox elements.
Most people find the idea of losing all their equipment upon death to be too hard and quit in frustration. What they don't realize is that if there's no challenge, there'll be no community, why seek help from others if you can do it easily yourself? Imo WoW went backwards.
@gortijx Lack of a challenge is pretty big, I think the reason why vanilla/bc was so successful was because there was a logical difficulty increase with content, and old content was still relevant. Now WoW throws out most of it's content because they want "as many people as possible" to experience end-game raiding, so content is very limited.
I totally agree. Personally, I don't think just the end content should be hard, like they tried to do with CTC, but the entire leveling from 1-85 should be quite challenging, not just the end-game parts.
I believe MMO's such as Asheron's Call and Ultima Online had it right. Pre-tbc WoW was also really, really enjoyable as well as parts of TBC. I don't want to sound elitist, it's just who I am, I enjoy a challenging game and I find it sad that there's so few of them in the MMO genre.
I think mmo's fail because WoW has set such a high standard everyone thinks this game will have the same system as wow, but better. I know when I see other mmo's I look for customization, pvp/pve content and community it just so happens wow has this, may not be super perfect but it has me playing. I came into wow during BC and I loved it. I think the only thing keeping wow alive is the addicted and people that want to experience a true mmo that doesn't suck.
@xynathegamer WoW is a staple in MMOs, and it's really easy to compare to because, most people know what it is. What other MMO has even touched the success that was has or had?
for me... mmos fail becuase you have to have a large amount of poeple on your team to experiance the "whole" of the game, what about if people hardly have time to play or dont have any friends. (it happens) 2nd ,it has alot of stupid repetitive stuff.. boring
@ihavesexyhair123 There are hundreds of MMOs, I needed to generalize, sorry if you feel that I'm supporting WoW, but there are reasons why it's on top, and nothing else has survived long enough to compete with it.
MMOs fail when they try to copy WoW. You can't make a copy of warcraft better than warcraft itself. I think Guild Wars 2 will be successful, because its aiming to be its own game.
WoW's community today is nothing but a husk of what it once was. The dungeon finder saw to that, I ran some of the new 4.3 dugeons today. No greetings, there was no conversation about the new content (or anything for that matter) and when we wiped once 2 people instantly ragequit
It was much more immersive when you had to ask around, group up and then travel to the intended dungeon, and the chances are you stuck with that group for a couple more dungeons. Great time & met some great people
@HuhIntense That was one of my favorite parts of WoW. Now you're in and out of a dungeon just as quickly as the dungeon finder put the group together. It really lost its epicosity :(
@HuhIntense I agree. I think all these conveniences are actually killing wow in the long run, and with the new Raid Finder coming up here soon, could get even worse :\
@HuhIntense i walked into Stormwind the other day and it was packed, i could hardly see the AH and bank.. not one person said a thing for 25minutes.. and i was asking shit
@HuhIntense While this may be true, look at new MMOs. Rift decided to go with the "build the community no LFG" they caved. ToR came out yesterday I already see hundreds of topics and posts complaining about the lack of LFG.
People act like Blizzard is so horrible but they keep innovating which has helped keep WoW alive for 7 years. They really need to find new ways to put life into the community though (hopefully in 5.0 with World Bosses and Dungeon Challenges they can).
@HuhIntense so true, and the fact that you can use dungeon finder now means you get dungeons alot faster, obviously, but the dungeons get so boring, much faster
i think i agree with pretty much everything in this video. i think the biggest reason that they fail is a seperation of community. when players start doing more things by themselves without the accompaniment of their fellow server friends or guildies, the community really hits the wall. this kind of thing leads to terrible player attitudes ie: people that think it's acceptable to put other players down, and find amusement out of it. that is how other players lose enjoyment in the game.
mmos fail that cant hold there head up i mean look how amazing bc was in wow and lich king was still pretty good but when cata came out u were revisiting alot of places and changing alot of the players interface thats why i quit wow within 2 months of cata it seems like they put there head down on the table instead of holding it high and dont care much for pandera. BUt guild wars 2 is trying somtething new with no montly pay and it can play on a large amounts of pc's
MMOs "fail" because they fail to establish enough tools to shake a healthy "local community" together. In early WoW, each server had a community were people had reputations and a social life. That's what I think made WoW so addicting. Oh and that mysterious "reward feeling" when you reach a goal, you've set yourself towards.
What an awesome video, ALL of the points (positive and negative) are correct, the editing and narration are AWESOME. To me this is your very best video, Syf, my congrats, greetings. :D
@w2pi Well although the game hasnt been released yet, the interaction of people during the beta was extremely good and personally I did not meet anyone not willing to help nor did I find many trolls, though I suppose we shall not know for sure until the game goes Live
@guerilla619 I did put a lot of thought into it, and initially I had about 20 talking points, but eventually I boiled it down to three because most mmos fail at these three levels, and "gameplay" would assume UI, and most mmos don't even have content to get you to endgame, let alone endgame content
lettuce be cereal, the only community within WoW is guilds. at this point everything can be done by clicking through a menu and jumping in a que, then getting thrown into an instanced area with randoms and running the whole thing without saying a word. even if you DID speak, what would be the point? you're on different realms and will never meet again. might be partly why WoW has lost 2 million subscribers since last year
mmos fail because there is no reward for grinding. when u grind, u shoulkd get something valuable in return thus making u feel it was worth it. in wow vanilla u grinded honor and got some SICK armors and weapons that were unique and special for pvp, whne u grind for 10 hoiurs for a simple lvlup it becomes fucking annoying
@w2pi as long as i get some cool reward for it, being alone doesnt bother me that much. but i guess thats just me. besides theres always the ppl u gonna kill using ur "reward" xd
The main reason MMO's fail is because of (As you said) non-cartoony graphics, Realistic graphics make the gameplay seem clunky as if there is a delay.
The thing about WoW is that blizzard use <1 second per Animation (Matching with GCD's), therefore you feel very connected with the character you play, and ofcourse Good script writers for the game engine. WoW is really streamlined where as when Rift launched, it was really slow and annoying :P
@ace101guy lol save your money...WoW isnt really worth it anymore--they keep catering to all the lil kids that play and get pissed when they get killed in pvp :)

vanilla - i play up to 60 and with others etc.
burning crusade - copys my level 60 character over to it and i continue on.
wotlk - same thing.

Just my 2 cents

MMOS fail because w2pi won't teach how to play WoW.
(p.s. Always loved your videos and I don't even play WoW. Hopefully soon I'll get around to it.)

@ace101guy lol save your money...WoW isnt really worth it anymore--they keep catering to all the lil kids that play and get pissed when they get killed in pvp :)
