The best female vocalists for 40 years ago, Janis Joplin and Sandy Denny, didn't meet the standards of a photo model, but as soon as they began to sing the audience forgot time and place and burst into tears. In intensity and emotional power they formed a class of their own. They reached the essential.
straight to my favorites! I thought Id heard everything this woman gave to us but,,,,nope,,,,,,this is something I havent heard before. I love these little rarities. Janis is the queen and I thank you for sharing this with the world. xx Subbed you and hugs to you ! PEACE "Jenny"
@FistMad Funny, because yes. Yes, I have listened to and own albums by all those artists. And I believe a singer like Janis Joplin stands beside them as brilliant examples of musicians.
@happyoppositeday quite stupid logic, she could play me ofcourse, my profession is not guitarist, but yet i wonder could she play Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page etc. i realy don't think so :)
@FistMad well then dont mind me when i say you're logic is quite flawed as well. just because nancy can't play like jimmy page doesnt mean that she wasnt a true rocker. in fast if i were using your logic i could say "rock isn't for white people" because of the fact that jimi hendrix was definitely the best guitarist there ever was.
@happyoppositeday dude or lady, there is no "the best guitarist" , try learning that.. for god sake:( there are only good guitarists and noobie. Well for jimmy he is a good guitarist, a excelent one, but for example let's take eddie van halen, he is an extremely good one as well. eddie can't play jimmy hendrix but jimmy couldn't play eddie aswell.. that's the shit and jimmy isn't one of the realy best in technique as jeff beck for example, he is simply an original that developed a new style
The rasp in her voice was something she did intentionally, it wasn't naturally a part of her speaking voice. Listen to her talk on interviews and she has no rasp at all. Great talent to be able to put that scratch in her voice at will.

every1 one that listens to an alternative to the mainstream they say this is way better than the mainstream. dont be butthurt just talk about her. Because the mainstream dont talk about janis, they talk about their artist. so talk about yours. :)
Janis Joplin was not generally attractive, but her voice made up for it. Today, its the exact opposite. No one can sing but they're famous cause they look good. Im not exactly a HUGE fan of Janis Joplin, but this is a fucking sad fact.
I wonder if all the people that got to see her live in concert knew that they were witnessing greatness and a legend -in- the- making....I sure hope the big budget movie they are gonna film will do her justice cuz she's one of a kind and deserves nothing less and all these so-called singers today need to pay close attention cuz THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE!!!!!!:):):)
For a contemporary version that is true to the original view the you tube video of Crystal Bowersox and Frankie May before she was on AI. Performed without a full band, just Crystal on quitar and Frankie on bass.
When Janis sings it tears your insides apart. You really feal it. Music nowadays is soulless. Not all, but most. If its not then you've never heard it in most cases.
I want to see someone do a hopped-up, rock version of this song kinda like how Nirvana covered Love Buzz by Shocking Blue. Kurt added that sweet guitar lick & solo and made that song awesome. Imagine how cool this song would be if done in that fashion. It's already cool as it is.
Maybe...but right now noone...and i mean it...noone has the voice of lady joplin...she with aretha and gloria...and some others were the top...even if it's been covered in a rock version the song will seem to be empty...her voice...so great voices make songs great...imagine it with any voice you wat (not jagger or plant or ozzy!!! those guys can do it in their own way!!! )...you'll realize that noone can sing it that way!

@helloadios12 Actually Dusty Springfield also does a great version of the song. It's not as good as Janis, but it's different and it's also good. I personally just decided to buy both cd's ;) Dusty's version is more resigned, where Janis' is desperate. Both are wonderful (they both have great voices and the tune itself is of course glorious), so there's no reason to choose one over the other - even if Janis IS the definitive ;)
@Chino2508 sorry, like what, are you absolutely nuts here?
