It's talking about the unhappiness of the world. The first guys way out is drugs, and the second girls way out is cutting. Both cases are trying to rid themselves of the depression and unhappiness. They don't know the real and only way is God, so they turn to these things.

I'm not sure what the artists had in mind when they wrote the song and everyone can have thier own view on the song whether it be religious or from a drug addicts perspective which all makes sense but it could also be about abortion and the child talking to the mother from the womb and the father and mothers bad habbits. In his defense, however, i guess you need some biblical knowledge (which not everyone has) to know that the lyrics "surely you will not die" is the words of the serpent in Genesis. I don't understand why people are saying that these lyrics are inspiring or uplifting. As cities burn has some of the darkest, most depressing lyrics i've ever heard. "Into The Sea," "Contact," "Made too Pretty." All have some really dark, sad lyrics.

I'm not trying to be rude, but i feel like only christians are trying to make this music uplifting. If you're not strong in you faith like me, the lyrics take on quite a different meaning.

This is definitely my favorite song by As Cities Burn. He's one of my favorite lyricists. This band has such a way with expressing an idea or an emotion. It's very inspiring as it is uplifting. We all have complex minds and are capable of deep thought and great insight, but few of us can articulate such thought and express it so profoundly. .

The drug reference is merely a part of the song, which is probably lamenting the different things that either we idolize or do to ourselves as a kind of Flagellant punishment/cure. Because of their Christian faith, this song is probably a religious statement and an outreach to those who hurt like this.

The good thing about this band is even though they have christian undertones, they also convey many other things that have nothing to do with it. Love, life, death, regret, and the like. They happen to mash up good and bad of christianity and life respectively. It's makes it so people can connect easier instead of just one demographic.
