  • They are slimmer and lighter now, inexpensive compared to a single function garmin, the yoke mount is out, Thanks for the video!

  • Paul, my man....hitting the tanning beds a little too hard. I'm worried about you brother.

  • Great review!

@ashtone1984 NICE! how long does it take for you to get your iPad for FREE from freegiveawaysonline.info ?

  • The Intro is too long

  • @PilotUnknown Ridiculously so

  • Ipad can't be used as an aviation tool. Two reasons out of many, it doesn't have real GPS, you have to use an external bluetooth GPS, and that is prohibited in aircraft by the FAA. Second reason is, all the apps for it are internet dependent, you also can't us Wifi or 3-4G in an aircraft, it is also prohibited. No transmitting devices are allowed in aircraft, only a real GPS is, because it is a receiving device.

  • Spamming? I am making legitimate comments about your video. I also have identified myself, so how is that spam. Just because you can respond with alternate answer, you don't go "Spammer!"

  • You don't need to try and make Ipad work as a flight tool. Ipad II costs $599 then you have to buy a external GPS, then all the many software, none of them do everything you need, so you are looking at over $1000! Then you will still not have everything you need. OR you can just buy an EFB, I have a VFRpad, it has everything built-in, no update costs. I paid $425!

  • Please don't support spammers. I got the same spammed copy and pasted comment on my videos from VFRpad user

  • Of course Avweb has reservations about the iPad. Garmin is a big advertiser.

  • are you Black?

  • I get the impression that this guy is a Garmin Salesman. LOL. Try out "Air Navigation Pro".

  • You mustache needs cutting

  • You have got to be kidding me! The review misses the revolution this brings to situational awareness. I consider it an absolute must have in the cockpit. The built in GPS of the 3G model allows you to know where you are on the SECTIONAL chart in relation to your route, which your Garmin GPS does not do (using the Foreflight app)

During our last flight in a G1000 equipped airplane my wife was only interested in whether we were tracking the pink line of our planned route of flight on the iPad

  • EXCELLENT - Thank You!!

  • Didn't even mention the gps.... The new HUD in foreflight is amazing.

  • This video is too negative and fails to mention the Skycharts Pro App. For a one-time $9.99 fee you have all the U.S. VFR, TAC, and IFR charts at your fingertips. Updates are free over wifi. I have been using this in the cockpit for several weeks, and it is awesome! With the iPad3G (no data subscription reqd), GPS never fails to show your location on the IFR or VFR charts! Bring up the approach plate with two finger taps. This is far better than paper. Mount it on the right seat yoke.

  • Good video, thanks AvWeb. And yeah, you should be able to come up with xwind data out of your Mark 1 melon!! It doesn't need to be to 5 decimal places usually, either...

  • thanks for such dedicated video

    really impressive and convincing!!..

can't believe that doing flying today

can be so easy and with peace in mind like this...

but If I were be flying GA again, I'd rather wait for

other slate computers and apps come to available ^^

  • Thanks Paul. I won't buy it.

  • I find it interesting that Paul seems to elaborate on the so-called warts of the iPad quite a bit more than he does with other electronic reviews. I personally think the iPad and the Foreflight app are absolutely amazing. Perfect? No, but it's far, far better than anything else out there. It makes all the other Readers and Tablet computers almost obsolete overnight.

  • iphone

  • Yes..the GPS is independent of 3G

  • Excellent review. Thanks!

  • I bought the iPad the day it was introduced and have been using it in the cockpit ever since. Along with the Foreflight app it's a great tool that replaces printed charts and airport information guides such as Flight Guide. It's also excellent for approach plates.

  • loved the video, much less - the ipad.

  • great review thanks... hopefully someday apple with make a similar product that can compete with garmin and replace the need for multiple instruments..and screens

  • @LTF85199 I don't think that day will every come, they'll always be some one to make something just a little better and people will buy it becz American's love accessories and toys.

Beside I would trust Garmin more to replace all my aviation screens before apple. (and yes I'm typing that on a MacBook)

  • @trevjsmith23 I understand what you are saying but I think instead of carrying a bunch of toys that does one specific thing more pilots would prefer one nice touch big-screen tablet or a laptop that can do multiple things... core instruments like GPS hardware weather radar all would still exists but they would all be connected to this computer via usb or somesort.. So I am more stressing the super-friendly user interface and enormous computation potential of today's PC microchips.

  • just hope it doesnt run outta battery.

  • Does anyone know if you can get the 3g version, not pay the monthly fees and still have the gps functionality? I don't

mind paying more for the unit but don't want to pay $30 month.

  • @mynameiskevinenglish No you can't!

  • @mynameiskevinenglish You aren't required to pay for service. You can buy the WiFi+3G version for an extra $130, and just not pay for the 3G service if all you want is the GPS. There are no contracts with the iPad.

  • Pretty good and level headed review. Why doesn't avweb make an app to take up where others leave off? Make some money filling that void that others have left. ;)

  • I use that for flying! I made my own little holder that straps onto my leg! I havent used ANY peace of paper for when i fly! even wheni want to write stuff down i can use my hand to right it on the ipad its awesome!

  • nice

  • It's ridiculously expensive.

  • @cormacorp Let's see: Garmin 696 at $3200 plus $1200 per year for subscriptions. iPad at $700 plus less than $100 for the app... Expensive is relative.

  • wow thats big! -twss
