or you could just use a DC motor and attach what ever you want to one end and spin the other, you made almost the same thing but a DC motor normally has the coal in the center and the magnets on the side

Buy a UPS system. Of course it depends on how long your lights will be out. A generator from your local hardware store, like Harbor Freight or Home Depot will be good for long periods, but use the UPS in between that and your computer to filter it properly. It is cheaper to purchase than to construct.
