Agree.Go back to gear sticks.foot clutch.Big tyres.Minimal wings.Motor racing again.Like u say ,miss a gear,guy gets past,u blow the engine.Then we would see who could REALLY drive.
A true legend. If the boneheads in F1 want to see more passing, make the drivers go back to shifting the transmission with a stick, not these damned paddle shifters they use now.
. If you miss a gear, the guy on your ass gets by or you blown the lump.
I wonder if these "modern era" F1 pilots remember or know how to drive stick shift tranny's. I can just imagine some of them going like: " Hey, there's 3 pedals down here WTF??!!!" A stick??? What's this for???
hit the nail on the head, couldn't agree more slideguy. F1 can be like this again it just needs to go back to basics, surely the proposed budget cap would help or am i way off the mark?
This is F1 at it's best. Driver talent is the only thing keeping them out of the wall, and thankfully the sport is going back to that era. But we will never see a driver with supreme bravery and control like Ayrton Senna da Silva ever again. This lap at Monaco is my favourite F1 clip. Show me a driver from today who can do what Senna does.
its easy to criticise todays drivers but, they can only drive what they are given and its still takes extraordinary skill and stamana to race a f1 car for 2hours in heat conditions or wet conditions. I envy them all ... what a great way to live your life! Senna was a man apart from the others in so many ways.
Watching this makes me realise how utterly crap & boring modern F1 is. Schumacher, Button, Raikkonen, Hamilton - none of them even come close to this level of car control and skill!
For once someone say something original for a change.
F1 drivers drive what they're given.
They are the best drivers in the world, thinking that if you put them in an older F1 car they would not be able to drive it because they don't have the car control is just plain silly.
Modern F1 may be more boring, modern F1 drivers aren't less skillful, in fact there' s more competition today to reach the top than ever.
That's what makes people even better at what they do.
this has been voted the greatest qually lap in history. he was 1.4 seconds quicker than 2nd placed prost. senna said after that he scared himself and he pushed way over the limit and u can see this by the effort and work on the steering wheel awesome driver, he owned this cercuit
he allready had the fastest lap (with 0.7 s on the nr.2: Prost) and yet he went on to improve even that! And was 1.5 s faster than Prost. Astunning lap!
And the look on Prost's face when he sees that 1.5 ....Priceless..
The master. Simple as that. So aggressive yet smotth at the same time. He is sorely missed. Unlike Schumacher, he respected his competitors and was always a touch of humility about him. We won't see his like again.
Careful of what u say MIster seriously!! Loved by many because he past be4 his time!!! But look at his ability behind the wheel I use 2 think Schmuacher himself was the main man till I indulged in history!!!
I agree with all....magical....the one-hand driving at 0:35...I had missed that before now....I have for the longest time marvelled at this lap, and his pole-winning lap at Suzuka 1989. I truly believe that no-one, on equal footing with equal machinery, could ever be at a greater level than Ayrton. His passion, commitment and dedication has never been matched......before or after.
At those days, drivers were more passionate about the sport. Senna, Prost, Alesi, Piquet...they all belong to the last generation of drivers who´s done it for the passion. Senna´s way of driving was flawless, inspired by Fangio´s technic, he always searched the over limits of the machine. As a brazilian, I know we have a proud heritage in motorsports, but I must admit: Senna was the greatest of all! Fangio was from another planet, he doesn´t count!
The shot of the car in the tunnel is not the same car as the in-car lap - it's edited in for this video (from The Senna biography) as the in-car transmission cut out during the tunnel. In fact the car shown in the tunnel is neither 89 nor 90 but 91. But the in-car video is all 90. Compare the mirror and screen size and shape to 89 Suzuka and 90 Jerez (both available on You Tube).
Its the US TV broadcast of this same lap and afterwards you see that Berger was his team-mate and Prost and Mansell were at Ferari. So it can only be 1990.
Ayrton is the best F1 driver in history or atleast in the modern era. Shamacher was special no doubt..but I believe many of his Championships were simply due to Ferrari domination..and of course team mates contributions (Rubens letting M.S win at the finish line). Senna was master class a true racing driver..he is a driver truly relies on skill, heart, adrenalin over engineering superiority.
I have just realized fully the real tragedy of Ayrton's death - not the death of the superstar icon but the human who dedicated his whole life to being the greatest of all time - and, though he aleady achieved that to the cognescenti (those "in the know") he was poised to achieve stats greater even than Schumi's final stats - which would have probably made him a household name with Mohammed Ali as the greatest sportsman of all time. So close to the pinnacle - and he deserved it. Cruel fate.
I miss him, his character, his driving. If Senna stayed alive, Schumacher would never got what he got today. He would ritered long ago. With whole lot of wrinkles. Cuz Senna is the King of F1
Everytime I watch this lap I'm amazed by how bumpy it is. I'm not a Senna fan but I do respect him and it does take some skill to keep a Formula 1 car Straight and true on bumps.
Mesmerizing,he truly was the best,i wish he was never killed in 94,oh the racing we have been denied because of that fateful event. My eyes well up with tears of sadness when i think of him!
Schumacher certainly wouldn't have gotten 7 championships that's for sure!
grande pilota grande uomo!!!cmq nulla a che vedere con la formula 1 di oggi!!zero elettronica tutto guida, macchina e pilota in simbiosi perfetta!tuttora non vedo in f1 un pilota che possa eguagliare ayrton!
Amazing to watch. F1 is just so different nowadays. I'm not saying current F1 drivers got it easy, but they just have to fight so much less with their cars. Watching Aryton here, he's over- and understeering all over the place. Simply being able to make the difference much more than current F1 drivers can.
Senna accident was most likely due to a bad weld in the steering column. Ratsenbergers accident was due to a loose nose cone- a mechanic fled the circuit afterwards
I was thinking the other day, to what extent Ayrton's fate was defined by his driving style? I mean he always drove on the edge and due to that he was more prone to accidents than say Prost. (I'm not looking at statistics here, but purely hypothesizing) Could it be just that he ran out luck? Was it his talent that made him so awesome or was it his fearless attitude?
His death was a result of a wheel suspension shaft penetrating his helmet. He was very unlucky not have survived that crash. Look at Kubica's in Canada 07, he was lucky. PS to szlaszlo84, you cannot "exhaust mathematical chances".
Senna was born to be a racing driver. Whenever he drove, he was never scared to die pushing to the limit. It was like he was willing to die just to find out how it felt to break the laws of physics. Really brave man. He spoke about Monaco before he died. He said this is the only track that scared him because he felt his "spirit separate from the body" whenever he pushed to the limit. btw, This is Monaco '90.
This is well known as being from 1990 - as in this onboard lap and the speech from Ayrton that is paired with it. And that is Prost in the Ferrari overalls at the end. I have this footage on a video from 1990. It's definitely not '89.
No it is '90 - this clip is an odd hybrid because it shows the '91 McLaren in the tunnel, and the bit where he gets held up by the other car (on the exit of the swimming pool section) has been chopped and replaced with the shot looking up at him... looking at this lap the skill of Senna was simply untouchable; he was a true racing genius...
Personally, i feel F1 has lost a bit of its flair. Before, you could actually see the skill of the driver pushing his car to the limit around the track. But now, it's simply allowing the car, aerodynamics, and electronics do the work for you. But, I still feel that F1 is the best Motorsport in the world.
Every time I watch Formula 1 nowadays, I thank GOD I had the chance to see Ayrton Senna sriving, even only through TV. The Best, the Greatest Sportsman Ever.
Nuno Cobra was the trainer of Ayrton Senna, mental, physical and physiological. He make Senna a totally focus driver. In Monaco he commit one mistake in 1988, when he was near 54s ahead of Prost and trying to blast him and spun off in swimming pool. The rest in 10 times [the first one with heavy rain] none. He was a master and genius. With Fangio, Clark and Rindt was the only pilots to beat his pole time in one race. Clark, Rindt and Senna make this in Monaco. Fangio in Nurburbring.
And did you watch Monaco today? Senna's name was dropped 20 times, 15 years after he last raced there - Schumacher never mentioned (just 1 year after he left - forgotten already!) BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!
Whenever someone says "Formula 1", the first thing that comes to my mind is Senna driving a McLaren-Honda at Monaco. I was only 4 when he died and I didnt start watching F1 till I was 10, but its great to see videos about him so I can learn more about the hero I missed out on.
" Recuerdo que corría más y más deprisa en cada vuelta(...) Llegó un momento en que yo era dos segundos más rápido que cualquier otro, incluyendo a mi compañero de equipo, que conducía un coche igual. En aquel momento me di cuenta, que estaba pasando los límites de la consciencia. Mónaco es corto y estrecho, y, entonces, tuve la sensación de que estaba en un túnel, el circuito, para mí, era sólo un túnel. Dentro de los límites físicos del circuito, era como si circulase sobre raíles..."
Ayrton's lap is incredible quick! But what it is said about Prost's face is ridiculous:does anyone believe Alain could fight for the pole with his sucking Ferrari? It was much easier for Ayrton to go for a flying lap with a McLaren (the best car at that moment) but it was impossible for Alain to go for a lying lap with Ferrari, which was more a truck than an F1 car.Impossible to compare pure speed with such a diffence in cars.Ayrton was faster than Alain, but in this case no comparison posible!!!
What the fuck you are talking about? They were at the same team... this is from 89, the info of the video is wrong, this footage is actually from 89. Prost went to Ferrari in 90, and in 90 he could battle for pole... just 91 Ferrari wasn't capable of fighting the McLaren and Williams.
Everytime I see this video. . .I can't believe that's a human being working the wheel, the pedals and the shifter at the same time at such intense speed around a track that is so narrow with no margin of error. . . its precise, calculated no nonsense driving. Something that only Ayrton Senna could do.
Look that oversteer at Loew's Hairpin! Simply brilliant! (@35s)
Did you see something like that in the past 15 years in F1? Of course not... Beacuse of the traction control. I'm looking forward the next season without traction control.
In fact it's 89. He and Prost were team-mates back then, that's why Prost's face is so hilarious, Senna was almost 2 seconds faster than him in the same car...
Why do you consider Senna like a god or hero? sure he was one of the best drivers ever to race in formula one, but I don't understand the god like or hero status. Everyone racing during his time put themselves in the same amount of risk. Comparing him to Jesus? I don't really know what you guys are thinking. Great racer and talented driver yes, why is he a god though?
Senna was no ordinary driver. He did things that were magical, even other pilots struggled to believe a man could do such things. Like Berger once said: "He is in a different place, operating on a totally different level. He is not just one step ahead of the rest of us - he is two steps ahead". And Chris Hilton: "An impossibly talented driver, his talent borders on the mysterious - his other-worldly skills are an enigma - he's not something anybody is going to understand".
Hahaha, that's the best part of the video, Prost's face, but also check Ron Dennis face, he couldn't believe it, Ayrton the fastest of all time, King of Monaco, King of Formula 1, God bless you Ayrton.
La faccia di prost alla fine è fantastica...

szlaszlo84 3 years ago

Great video of the greatest ever. Although this is 1990 by the way.
mvfF1Fanatic 3 years ago
actually this is 89.. in 90 he is held up on pole lap around the swimming pool for a few tenths of a second
szlaszlo84 3 years ago
This is well known as being from 1990 - as in this onboard lap and the speech from Ayrton that is paired with it. And that is Prost in the Ferrari overalls at the end. I have this footage on a video from 1990. It's definitely not '89.
mvfF1Fanatic 3 years ago
i meant 90 not 91 got confused on the numbers :)
szlaszlo84 3 years ago
No it is '90 - this clip is an odd hybrid because it shows the '91 McLaren in the tunnel, and the bit where he gets held up by the other car (on the exit of the swimming pool section) has been chopped and replaced with the shot looking up at him... looking at this lap the skill of Senna was simply untouchable; he was a true racing genius...
jammyrex 3 years ago
Personally, i feel F1 has lost a bit of its flair. Before, you could actually see the skill of the driver pushing his car to the limit around the track. But now, it's simply allowing the car, aerodynamics, and electronics do the work for you. But, I still feel that F1 is the best Motorsport in the world.

Every time I watch Formula 1 nowadays, I thank GOD I had the chance to see Ayrton Senna sriving, even only through TV. The Best, the Greatest Sportsman Ever.

is this where he beat the second time with 1.5 second ?

Nuno Cobra was the trainer of Ayrton Senna, mental, physical and physiological. He make Senna a totally focus driver. In Monaco he commit one mistake in 1988, when he was near 54s ahead of Prost and trying to blast him and spun off in swimming pool. The rest in 10 times [the first one with heavy rain] none. He was a master and genius. With Fangio, Clark and Rindt was the only pilots to beat his pole time in one race. Clark, Rindt and Senna make this in Monaco. Fangio in Nurburbring.
joseavs 3 years ago
And did you watch Monaco today? Senna's name was dropped 20 times, 15 years after he last raced there - Schumacher never mentioned (just 1 year after he left - forgotten already!) BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!
OWNED!
mallamoozoo 3 years ago
But Senna was also the pole position in Monaco 1991.
He won the grand prix for 6 awesome times... No one will never break his mark.
I'm proud of being Brazilian 'cause of Senna, the best Brazilian ever known.
Live forever, Senna, in everyone's mind.

It was much easier for Ayrton to go for a flying lap with a McLaren (the best car at that moment) but it was impossible for Alain to go for a lying lap with Ferrari, which was more a truck than an F1 car.Impossible to compare pure speed with such a diffence in cars.Ayrton was faster than Alain, but in this case no comparison posible!!!
lucianoestivill 4 years ago

Great racer and talented driver yes, why is he a god though?
vr83 4 years ago
Senna was no ordinary driver. He did things that were magical, even other pilots struggled to believe a man could do such things. Like Berger once said: "He is in a different place, operating on a totally different level. He is not just one step ahead of the rest of us - he is two steps ahead". And Chris Hilton: "An impossibly talented driver, his talent borders on the mysterious - his other-worldly skills are an enigma - he's not something anybody is going to understand".

and the look on Prost's face like, "WTF?!?!?!?"
BlueFox284 4 years ago
Hahaha, that's the best part of the video, Prost's face, but also check Ron Dennis face, he couldn't believe it, Ayrton the fastest of all time, King of Monaco, King of Formula 1, God bless you Ayrton.
