  • i would give my life to have been able to just tell elliott how much he has helped us all through. thank you elliott "im never gonna know you now but im gonna love you anyhow"

  • how come its an interview from 1998. but hes playing happiness that came out in in like 2000?

  • so crazy to think he was going through a heavy depression during this time. he's in such good spirits here.

  • elliott smith lost a TALENT show??! thats like a balloon losing a helium contest!

  • Man he was gifted, so missed..............

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Thank you, Elwin, for uploading one of the most (if not the most) revealing interviews of Elliott I've seen. There was something so touching about him. He was so unaffected and so unguarded. That shy, nervous smile just kills me.

  • best album is self-titled

  • such a beautiful smile and such a beautiful man

  • I was there that year and I saw him play. It's the most fond memory I have of ever seeing anyone play at a concert/festival. I became an instant fan of his music and have been ever since. RIP Elliott

  • what was your best performance ever?"i dont know,i played in a talent show when i was like 12!" thats so characteristic, that figures...love him...

  • SelfTitled. Every song is amazing.

  • I just love him.

More talent in his little toe than most people have in their whole body.

My university guitar instructor couldn't even play most of his tunes. It made me smile.

  • thanx for uploading this!!!!!

  • To hear the words "Celine Dion" coming out of his mouth still makes me laugh aloud. :D

  • i wish they would give it a bone to that oscar question...

  • god forbid if you play the drums like a guitar player. i like that part

  • i have to say, elliott wasn't very good looking....imo....although im glad. He was a beautiful person, which leaves a better legacy than looks. I am so mad and sad he is gone...but at least he left us with tons of music! ~

  • From the Oregon lowlands to the Low Countries. He's gone but he got around. Great career.

  • He was at a party at my brothers and I drank beer with him. He was shy though.

  • I was there...17 years old.. best memory ever; him playing in a crowded Higher Ground tent and me thinking: who is this great guy? I never stopped loving his music. Thank you for this!

  • I can't pretend to know how he felt, but I smile when I listen to his music. People look at me like I'm crazy when I say that but its true.

  • he does speak intelligently when he needs to, otherwise hes down to earth and doesnt like the spot light like many others would. i enjoy him.

  • what I used to be will pass away and then you'll see, that all I want now is happiness for you and me.

  • @36stylesofdanger, you need to listen carefully to his interviews. At first listen, it seems like his ideas are choppy and aren't making sense. At second listen, you will clearly see that he makes perfect sense and also valid points. Some people aren't the best public speakers, regardless if they're an addict or not. I suck at public speaking and find myself at a loss for words, but if I have time to sit down and think about what I want to say, I can express my words easily through writing.

  • @36stylesofdanger Your right. People shouldn't think of him as a god. He was just a person. He just happened to be someone who inspired the minds of hundreds of thousands, and quite possibly saved many young lives. I happen to know of someone who got through a lot more than just high school. But in all of that, Elliott couldn't get by his own past. There is a lot more to someones addiction then someone sees. I know what you mean, but try giving us your views without beating us with it

  • God, it must have been so annoying being asked about the damn Oscar performance so much.

Regardless, it was great seeing another Elliott Smith interview. R.I.P.

  • did anyone laugh out loud when he said starspangled hoola-hooper?

  • love

  • i hate you daytoafreakboy

  • i miss this man, such a beautiful soul.. he was never meant for life in a world such as this.. rest in peace dear friend

  • is this documentary out?

  • elliott smith is cool!

  • Seems like a lot of people from this area of the world really dug him. Good interview.. Thank you.

  • amazing, thankyou

  • He was really a humble, shy, introspective person : the exact opposite of any top seller american pop singer.

    RIP

  • Yes-:)

  • Thanks for this video Elwin, never saw it before.

  • I miss you.

  • few people can express themselves like elliott

  • i met a guy a while ago who saw elliott when he was a teen, i was so envious because i wish i couldve seen someone with so much heart and talent live

  • so intresting just look at him

    an unforgettable being

  • to bad jeff mangum didn't save him with his time machine.

pun intended, but not for humor.

  • @dethvallie6t9 I think I love you.

  • Great musician and amazing songwriter... I am so glad that I went to see him when a friend asked at his concert at the University of Utah before he died... He sounded great live and his songs were living works so much better then the superficial crap on most of the radio.

  • i miss you elliott

  • Wish you were here Elliott R.I.P.

  • what song is it that hes playin in the begining

    ?

  • That song is called "Happiness". It's from the album Figure 8.

  • it's "Happiness".

  • I'm absolutely in love with Elliott. His smile was beautiful.

  • i am fortunate enough to see Elliott perform, once in 1999 (solo) and 2000 (band). i was right in front of him during his solo set, close enough to shake his hand. i was very much in awe of his performance and at the end, he looked down and waved good-bye at me. because i was standing so close, i can say he's a very good looking man.

  • i don't usually use this word, but i'm incredibly jealous.

  • oh my god. you are the luckiest person ever.

  • @ElimRem lucky

  • whoa. ugly?!? that is a very strong word. i think elliott smith is goddamn hot! and the fact that he was the way he was, just so talented, humble and sweet makes him even that much more hotter. so...ugly? no way. absolutely not. he is totally hot.

  • when he smiles its like the sun breaking through the clouds. this tears my heart out.

  • i think hes extremely handsome.

in every way shape and form.

  • me too...and not to mention an angels voice!!!!

  • like playing on the moon :D

  • he smiles so much in this :)

  • I feel like I'd never be able to stop smiling around him if I'd ever been able to meet him.

It's just such a sad turn of events...

But someday we might all be lucky enough to see how happy he could be.

  • Elliott, I'm never gonna know you know, but i'll still love you anyhow.

  • Wow. He's just a dude. Just a guy.

    Just like you and I.

  • Yup hes just a guy, that influenced and touched the souls of millions

  • he was very talented

his music may seem simple to someone who can't see the beauty in it. but it is so deep, and touches so many so deeply its hard to believe

  • What's the song he plays in the beginning?

  • it's Happiness

  • back then it was known as "Tom's Start"

  • I love what he says between 5:09-5:30. What he said was true...very true!

  • He was so beautiful.

  • I had never seen this video; thank you for uploading.

Elliott is very colorful, in his own, timid, way.

  • Thanks for uploading man.

  • he's so damn adorable.

i wish i could see him live. <3

  • "You can pretend you're bunch of people", it's kind of sad how he says that, though I'm doing that all the time haha. This is the first time I watch his interview though I've adored his music for a very long time. I think he tells all the most important things in his songs, and anyway someone said once that the only time he was really his own and relaxed was when he played music, but I don't know, how could I know, I just try to find out what kind of person he was.

  • thanks for sharing.

  • "but yea mostly its me trying to play different things" haha so modest. as if hes trying. effortlessly trying i would say is more accurate.

  • Shit I love him.

  • music aside, Elliott is one of the only musicians who I have a lot of respect for as a person.

  • thanks for this. i enjoyed it very much

    -peace

  • he must pf been SO sick of explaining his night at the Oscar's.

  • yeah, every time they mention it you can almost hear him sigh disappointedly :)

  • actually this wasnt long after the oscars, so it was a valid question and for people who were watching, who hadn't heard of him before understood then that he accomplished alot already

  • He seems so fucking humble and shy. Easy to forget when you're listening to him talk that he was the best writer of songs ever in the opinion of many.

  • HAHAHA.

"It was kind of like playing on the moon, or something, you know?"

  • @skippyrandom

i couldnt have said it any better. he had such a great sense of humor...some people seem to forget that...

  • Wonderful interview thanks for posting :)

  • i love the way he thinks and that he's not afraid to actually say what he feels

  • what a great guy. always so real.

  • i agree, his smile is beautiful.

  • His smile is one of the prettiest things I've ever seen.

Thanks for uploading such a fantastic interview. :)

    Oi, I know that feeling.

  • Thanks so much, loved it

  • "I lost to a star spangled, hula hooper, tap dancer girl... dance to an American patriotic song..."

No one could beat that girl, Elliott. :)

  • WOW TNX ALOT!!!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this gem! Elliott shines and it's really great to hear him talk about music. XO.

  • It's really great too hear him talk; Full stop. ;P

Seriously, I love his interviews. The way he talks, kind of reminds me of the way I talk. Accept I'm british and have a deeper voice. He really makes me laugh though. XD

Hope there's a heaven and he's there. I really do. Even though I don't believe in that shit, I really hope so. =)
