I really don't understand why everyone's getting hung up on this whole trill thing. It comprises such a small portion of the piece, and it's called for only at the very end! We should concentrate on what Anderson does sing well, which is the rest of the aria.
Brilliant! Her performance compares quite favorably with those of Sutherland and Callas. Unlike Netrebko and Dessay who can't sing this role for nuts.
Let it be known that June Anderson's vocal type is very rare. It is not too often that we get a soprano who can sing these runs, trills, and ornamentations with such a big voice. That's why this role was so underappreciated for over a century because so few sopranos could pull it off well.
@operaeater Are you MAD?????!!!! She's known for her trill, which -like the rest of the voice - is spectacular! Perhaps you should STUDY opera instead of eating it.
@ian1856 she cannot sing a trill, I don't need to study, it's just plain simple - listen to what she's doing. ;) her trill is just a bad attempt, nevertheless she's a great singer and it'd be stupid not to like her just because of the trill
@ian1856 june is known for a lot of things but a trill is not one of them!!!... like caballe she only has a trill on a very very good day,..it is there but it is not dependable!!!.... she's an amazing singer though!!!... she manages to compensate very well for her lack of a decent trill!!!
@CallasAfrica You know, I've become allergic to "fans," who themselves have never achieved ANYTHING, sitting around nit-picking and spouting the third-hand, hackneyed opinions that they do. I wish they would all go back to their tiny, meaningless lives...but that's just me. I guess I'll have to kill myself. LOL
You're right. When Joan Sutherland first met her, she remarked, "You've got my chin! That's probably how we were both able to produce those big sounds." There is something to be said for how such opera singers can sing with larger voices because of unsually large chins, necks, cheekbones, jaws, ribcages, etc...
i know what youre talking about, this was about the time her voice began to decline, if you listen to some of her earlier stuff it sounds quite different, much of it has a more pleasing tone. Her Dinorah video thats 4 or 5 down on the related videos list sounds great for her.
This is the RIGHT color for Sonnambula (as is the case for superb Devia and in the past, Callas and Sutherland!) Anderson struggles a bit with top hight notes, the trill is weak, but this is SUPERB SINGING. Thank you for posting!
Thanks. I just didn't notice a trill in this particular performance of Ah non credea. She's a wonderful singer and I'm glad to know she does in fact have a trill. But there are many who don't, even some who have sung Lucia and Traviata. This includes such singers of bygone days as Lucrezia Bori and Tote dal Monte. I wonder why. I had one singer tell me it wasn't necessary. But for bel canto I would think it essential. I'll try to locate that Rome performance.
She has an INCREDIBLE trill! Have you not heard her sing this song when she performed the opera in Rome? Her trill is monumentously good! The best since Sutherland.
I would contend that she actually doesn't have a real trill at all. She manufactures a trill-like thing, but a TRUE trill it absolutely is NOT. She has even admitted to this in interviews (particularly in the book "DIVAS").
And you would be right! I allowed my ears (and admitted love for this artist) decieve me. She does not have a true trill. Also (just a side note), I posted that when I was still learning the basics of opera. I know much better now and thanks for the respectful correction! Not so many are very respectful here on Youtube...

Absolutely correct. She's not the only one; there a number of purported "coloraturas" who can nothing but manage a shake. And Anderson's voice is not especially large, as dougbalt contends. Maybe compared to these leggieri like Dessay, Jo, etc..
Why don't you listen to some live recordings with better quality than Youtube, so that you can hear her side-by-side with other singers. Only in live recordings, and better actually live, you can get an idea for the size of her voice. Certainly, she could never sing Brunnhilde, but for a coloratura she has a big voice.
You are right, I have heard her live at the met.. in rigoletto with Pavorotti. and she has a large enough voice.. So btw does he.. a large lyric voice.
Pity June Anderson has begun to lose her vocal power and freshness at that time. The high notes she struggled to hit are squeezed and little bit of strident.
@dougbalt Renee CAN'T sing bel canto. She jazzes it up & changes the original music for bel canto roles. The last great bel canto singers were Caballe, Verrett, Sills & Sutherland. June Anderson does sing marvelous bel canto though as did Carol Vaness..but in the 80's we saw the last of good bel canto singing.

Fine singing. OK, not a trill equal to Sutherland's, but whose is?

This is very good and skilled especially considering she is out of her prime for a coloratura.

I PREFER EDITA GRUBEROVA SINGING THIS

Gruberova is a bit harsh for my taste in bel canto roles. Zerbinetta on the other hand, is all hers.

She is a great singer! I just don't like her vocal color at all. It always sounds a little pinched like a cat's meow.

As I've always said, I prefer no trill to a bad trill, so this wasn't a bad move for her. Trills are hard to master.

Phenomenal.
It's amazing what breath control can achieve. I adore the stability of her tone.
For me beauty of voice is determined as clear intonation+expression. And she makes me happy.

Disagree strongly with this assessment. Check her out in the Daphne clip here on youtube from 2005. She's still got it - singing Strauss no less.

Yes, her Daphne is absolutely beautiful. I recommend both the DVD and CD, and I think it's nice than even Renée Fleming's version.
