We only break fights up if one player has an advantage, and even then, only if it is SAFE for us to do so. We generally let them tireout first (let the fight it out), and parents who yell like that don't make anything better. Yelling at the reffs will help your kids team win. Cause we really like that...

I have played and reffed. the first rule they teach you as a hockey ref when it comes to fights is this (and from experience i know its true): in a fight, the player is looking to hurt the person he is fighting. they will throw eachother if given the chance. so let them get tired to avoid getting accidentally puched or cut with a blade. and if its a team brawl, go to the fights by whichever looks more dangerous for either participant

refs arent supposed to go in until its safe (when punches are not being thrown). If you can break it up before it starts thats the best possible scenario, but if they start throwing punches there needs to be two refs, one on each side, wait till the punches stop flying, and then they intervene. Hockey parents dont know shit.

@jayblob716 That is not accurate. In some levels fighting is not permitted. In such a case the linesman are to break the fight up promptly. This would be in house hockey and some competitive. Typically one you hit Junior hockey fighting is permitted.

With that being said if it is unsafe to enter the fight the officials have no choice but to stand back. In this fight the first time they hit the ice would be the time to break it

Riight well if your referring to the refs doing a bad job throughout the whole game, I cannot argue as I was not there, but as far as the fight the did their jobs. you have to remember there is only 3 of them. And once two players are engaged, the rules are (at least here) that for safety reasons the refs are not to step in until they feel safe to do so. Trying to break up a fight at the risk of getting clocked is always dangerous. More so when dealing with teens who's testosterone takes over.

i am a fellow ref, and the refs did everything they should have. if kids are going to fight, they are going to fight. n some casses it is not preventable. they can only take care of one set of players at a time, if some others decided to start some stupid shit they are gonna sit some hefty penalties. the linesman are not suposed to go in on a fight by themselves so he had to wait for his partner.
