  • Thanks for posting this!!! Great job. :)

  • He sounds exactly like my dentist

  • thumbs up if you thought something was gonna pop up!!!! lol :P

  • I enjoyed it! Regardless what the others say about the music!!!

  • Thank you for posting this!!!

  • I loved this!! especially the yet at the end!! thank you and the music was great

  • He sounds so different from what I imagined

  • @colinmcom14 He is a really good speaker even if you can kind hear his accent

  • First of all, thank you for making this available. I think you did a marvelous job with it and the music is very good and appropiate. There just isn't that much Houdini audio out there for either Harry or Bess. I asked his last living relative, a niece named Marie Blood what they called each other when alone. Mostly pet names like "honey", etc. but when she was mad at him,she called him MISTER HOUDINI!

  • It was very generous of you to share this clip with the world, sadly a large percentage of magicians seem to go out of their way to be obnoxious and are amongst the worst hypercrits going. Makes you ashamed to be associated with them.

  • @Kronedaddy. Just amazing. I've been a Houdini fan since I was a kid. I never knew this clip existed. Thanks for posting this, it's greatly appreciated.

  • cool

  • I love that at the end, 'as far as anyone knows, Harry hasn't come back...YET', yet, I love that implication, because yes, who knows? It all comes down to your beliefs I suppose but once again, who knows? Maybe Harry's just waiting for everyone to shut up so he can say his own piece.

  • Thanks for putting this up, at a magic show I was at a couple years back the guy performing played a small clip of Harry's voice, and we could hardly understand any of it, much BETTER sound quality here.

  • fck ya houdini real name Erik Weisz...from Hungary...but he said always: Im from wisconsin pff

  • there is no possible way for anyone to return from the dead. not even walt disney, whose body was put in a chronic freezer. body & soul are two different things. for example, the body slowly turns into dust once the person has died. has your body ever shown signs of disintegration? have you ever seen your skin crumble away? of course not. the soul is the body's power source. without it, the body cannot stay in one piece.

  • @chadturnerteen1 Walt Disney wasn't frozen, he was buried.

  • @TheBookWorm1718 not from what i've heard. i'll check my research anyway. and if he was buried, where is his grave?

  • @chadturnerteen1 Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles, only I was wrong, it's his ashes there, he was cremated.

  • First cool man on earth.

  • That sounds like Michael Jackson's voice. That's not Houdini

  • Great video. Thanks so much. ;-)

  • Thanks for creating this; I enjoyed listening to it, and was surprised to hear the accent. I suppose in that day and age in the US, many individuals were either immigrants or only a generation or two descended from, so foreign accents were probably more prevalent. At any rate; thanks again - well done.

  • I think he looks mysterious too, a true caracter. This video makes me interested in him again. Haven`t seen the Curtis movie since I was a kid, back in the 70`s.

I can`t remember if it was good. If I remember correctly after all this time, I think the movie starts with a saw, and Houdini mearly gets away (!)

  • Here here, if you make art you can tell people to go fuck them selves.

  • His iPOD sounds funny!

  • fine work !

  • OK, I am tired getting comments from people telling me how I should do this, and write this, and use this and that music. I did this video for people to watch and enjoy. This ain't the friggin Sundance, you all aren't critics for Entertainment Weekly. If you like it GREAT, if you don't GREAT, go watch something else. Don't sit and tell me how I should have made the video. I used the music, pics, and text I wanted. Thanks for all the nice comments, but I will be disabling comments soon.

  • @Kronedaddy You should have used quotes around some of the text in the paragraph above and it would have been cool if you would have written the last word "soon" in all caps like this... SOON. Also, if you could wear a brown shirt tomorrow, that'd be really neat and about that haircut, not diggin' it my man - let's try dreads on you for awhile. Fire off your planned menu for next week and we'll all go through it and decide what you'll really be consuming. Just kiddin' man. I understand!

  • @Kronedaddy Excellent video. I may have missed it. Do you have the date/year of his recording?

  • @phillip4644 According to the dvd this is a special feature on, it was recorded in 1914.

  • @Kronedaddy i love this video! thank you :D

  • Enough with the corny intro and let the man talk!

  • Harry Houdini was born on this day (April 6th,1874)

  • @Albertan1956 he died this day

    halloween

  • @JazzAce340 good try though.

  • @JazzAce340 Actually , i was being sardonic

  • I love that "high-class" elocution that people used at the turn of the century. If you listen to recordings of Teddy Roosevelt, he talked the same way.

  • wats the name of the first song ?

  • nice video!!!!and Happy Birthday to Mr. Harry Houdini!!!the best master of escapes,of cards of everything:D:)

  • I personally like the music, and the video. Thanks!

  • 137éme. anniversaire de la naissance de harry houdini

  • Hauntingly beautiful music! And, therefore, totally appropriate for the eerieness of listening to the actual voices of one of stage magic's First Couples. There have been a lot of semi-fictionalized movies made of them. But, I'm sure Hollywood will never be able to do justice to the life and legend of...the Great Houdinis!

P.S.--- Happy Birthday, Harry! Wherever you are. :-)

  • "vocabularically" was a joke BTW, I didn't find "would this annoy the fuck out of me if I was the one watching the clip?" to be "constructive criticism." Sorry if you don't enjoy the music. I personally do like it, but if my reply was a bit brusque for your delicate sensibilities, I apologize. Let's all just get along and wish Happy Birthday to Mr. Houdini.

  • @Kronedaddy Well as you can see by the number of positive votes is has recieved, I'd say it WAS pretty constructive criticism. Point being, a video loses all of its impact if the soundtrack "annoys the fuck" out of you. (see any video with a 009 soundsystem - with a spirit soundtrack) Whether you objected to the swearing or the the fact it was "a bit brusque" it wasnt an unreasonable thing to say. So if you're going to condescend, be prepared to be condescended to old boy. Ta ta.

  • haunting.rip.the greatest escaplogist ever to walk the planet

  • nice

  • What's the song name? The first one

  • google

  • I am back. I am here. I am with everyone who has ever died. Contained in the mind of one man. God is with us. He loves us. He forgives us all.

  • The intro was too long and unnecessary and the music was annoying, could you make a version with that part cut out?

  • wow just awesome how far technology has advanced in 100 years. Amazing. Love the archival evidence of what these people sounded like. So cool.

  • Happy 137th Birthday wherever you are....

  • Is he talking or is it and speech?

  • is it really him? ... lol

  • Cool dude.

  • houdin was french and he doesnt sound french in this : (

  • @aethefox7 He was Hungarian

  • @aethefox7

Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin was french. This dude, Harry Houdini is hungarian who lived in Appleton, Wisconsin. He chose houdini because some friend of his told him that adding an "i" to houdin would mean "like houdin" and Erik Weisz (now known as Harry Houdini) was greatly influenced by this french magician.

  • tbh this sounds fake to me

  • @MattMorris1992MW2 Too bad it's not. You can read various biographies that discuss this recording. herp derp

  • @MattMorris1992MW2 oh ok just sounded a lil disorted

  • I LIKE the intro and the music very much. Thank You for sharing this, it is great!

  • great video

houdini was and still a great escapist and magician

hopefully he'll return one of these days.

  • This is neat! thanks for the post

  • the picture of the water torture thing was in assassins creed 2 in the truth small world hehe

  • I like the intro music too! I always wonder every year on Halloween if there will be a message from him. They report on it all the time!

  • actually houdini's mother died and he wanted to talk to her again so became interest in psychics then realised that they were just using tricks so went on a campaign of exposing them

  • subtitles please!

  • I think a better intro music would have been the opening track to the 2009 movie 'Sherlock Holmes'! The old piano is perfect!

  • I personally liked the intro and video. Thanks for posting it.

  • He looks really good at 1:11

  • I personally like the intro and thanks for posting this!

  • He was a Hungarian-American, that is why the accent...:) And we are all proud of him from Hungary too!

  • he sounds like Donald Duck

  • Why so much hate for the opening music? I find that very surprising. Oh well. This sure is an interesting video, mr. Kronedaddy. Thank you. : )

  • I actually like the music. Call me crazy. Or European.

  • Thank you very much i allways wanted to hear his voice. He had a very intereting accent.THANK U FOR SHARING WITH THE YOUTUBER COMMUNITY!

  • Awful intro - when you make clips and post them on youtube, the first thing you should consider is "would this annoy the fuck out of me if I was the one watching the clip?"

If the answer is yes, just leave it the fuck out. But thanks for posting this; still better than nothing.

  • @Peemon - I personally like the music and other than a couple of other "vocabularically challenged" viewers, most enjoy the spooky quality of it. Judging from the music you have listed as your favorites, I would expect your reply. Thanks for viewing the video though.

  • @Kronedaddy: I think the enigmatic quality of the music is quite apropos and adds mystique to the Houdini cachet. Cheers!

  • @Kronedaddy - thanks for posting the music at the end. I loved it i couldnt think of the title of the piece but I remember it now! haha

  • @Kronedaddy "vocabularically" just isnt a word. Doesn't that make YOU "vocabularically" challened? It's either Verbally or Grammatically but not just some made up word you illiterate cretin. Oh and the music is "Haunting" not "Spooky." You really arent very good at english are you and yet you criticize someone with a vaild point and a differeng opinion. Learn to take Criticism with grace or youll end up looking petty, self righteous and a little stupid...."vocabularically" honestly!

  • @Kronedaddy

I won't repeat the same thing about the music you've already heard, because I have a slightly different take.

The 1st minute is a waste of time. You might have called the video "Houdini Speaks after a minute of hype with a spooky quality to it."

Be careful to notice, I liked the music you chose. I just didn't want to hear it for a minute and read the aggrandizing text before the material I was drawn into the video for.

    Is that better stated?

  • @Kronedaddy

The issue isn't "quality" or "taste in music". The issue is needless delay devoid of benefit.

Look at this video's Insight information and look at the hot spot information. You will doubtless get the information you need. I know what you'll find before you get there.

Retain this information in your effort to make better videos. Viewers don't like coming for something and being made to wait, no matter how nice you think the wait is.

  • @Peemon I simply don't agree. It was some great music and pictures in the intro!

  • @Peemon Did you make a clip of the same person? The first thing you should do when commenting is think "Could I do better" if the answer is yes then post it, if not then shut the fuck up. But thanks for your stupid comment.

  • @Peemon you must be e retard cunt if you dont like the music...go back to ur dick and suck et....fucking tarder fuck

  • @Peemon Peemon, go PEE some place else.

  • 1:24 `i am willing to fuck the son` lol

  • @fnyjkr would have, go back to school

  • wtf is with the music? its like a Rabiit Screaming for help

  • @fnyjkr

    oh okay :)

  • @fnyjkr - My great uncle who lived in Britain followed his career. He detested spiritualists and their money grubbing ways and made his life's work the debunking and exposing of them. He thought of them as parasites that leached off the grief of those left behind.

  • @fnyjkr - Try reading up on Houdini before opening your mouth.

  • I like the music unlike the other comment.

  • gratis !!

  • Great clip thanx for uploading - think it's about time we had a new movie based on his life - and more accurate than the Tony Curtis movie ?

  • The music is freaky well I never heard anything like it before so no offense,I'm gonna have nightmares now haha jk

  • Houdini was a true master.. we need our Houdini's today (Penn and Teller are doing a great job so far). We need someone to sneak on a "TAPS" setup and bust them in the act of faking their ghosts with video evidence so that the con artists of TAPS and maybe even SYFY will be punished for lies and deceit intended to make profit. Its a sad day when TAPS is prime time and hugely popular..how quickly people forget and lean back on the crutch the con artist offers his victim.

  • Thankyou for everything you have done Houdini, the entertainment, the debunking of fakes, and the education.

The recording was done on Edison wax cylinders, and you can it spinning (sounds like horse steps) sometimes during the recording.

  • aww.... R.I.P maybe he is still alive and cheats death? YOU NEVAH KNOW MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! *throws down smoke bomb and dissapears!*

  • wat?! wat did he say!? supernatural wat?! wat dadadaada? 1000 dollar? WAT?!?!?!?! IMPOSSIBLE WAT?!?!?!?!?!

  • r.i.p houdini

  • Is that music Hungarian? Is that why it was appended to the video?

  • Irish. No idea why they used it....

  • COOL :]

  • I took a pic of myself at Houdidnis grave site today!!!

  • I was at his grave site today!

  • These are from 1914 wax cylinder recordings, the only known voice recordings of Houdini. The originals are now in the collection of magician David Copperfield.

  • His face zooming in.... I mean..... It's really freaking me out..... Seriously :O

  • @rayvenyor his eyes like demon

  • How fascinating to hear his actual voice!

  • At the end of this video "Yet." was correct i heard that before he died of a burst appendix he told his brother if he ever were to die contact him through a wigi board(dat witchcraft board with the letters and triangular magnifying thingy)to the spiritual word and he will respond and escape from the handcuffs he was buried with and come out his grave. This has been attempted every halloween .(Harry Houdini real name:Eric Weese all facts were takin frm Ripley's Believe It or Not

  • His related to albert einstein.

  • how?

  • I was just kidding. I just heard Houdini is Jew too, and he speaks like albert einstein. However, I don't think they are related.

  • holohulolo..Yes, Harry Houdini was a Jew..his real name was Erich Weiss.

Is that a problem? Why do you bring that up, I wonder..........

    Rest in peace Erich..

  • Hahaha I said I was just joking didn't I... people...

    nvm

  • That music is godawful annoying.

  • houdini inspired me to become a magician

  • Thanks for the upload. I love how he was always calling out his audience or other magicians. He never lost, either, simply because he was the best.

Not dead, just conserving oxygen until the world needs him again.

  • @TaylorMacPherson: Um, he didn't die through drowning. That was just a myth.

  • W O W!!!!!! I have been fascinated by Houdini for 40 years. To hear him SPEAK - INCREDIBLE! I'll never forget this. Thank you to the person who posted this.

  • he really had power to do magic!

  • Houdini was the first of the rational, atheistic magicians. Penn and Teller and James Randi carry on where he left off. I have a great deal of respect for Houdini. He was ahead of his time.

  • Houdini was Jewish...

  • He also believed in spiritualism. He made it his mission to expose the fake mediums who were preying on vulnerable people in order to make money. Perhaps some things never change...

  • Houdini thought spiritualism was bullshit. That's why he sought to expose it. You don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

  • I would suggest that the eloquence with which you express yourself is a clear indication of just how much thought you put into so many parts of your life - including your research into this man. I have direct quotes from him that clearly you have not availed yourself with. I repeat; his objective was to expose phonies.

  • @pro213 Houdini did not believe in spiritualism. It sounds like your trying to bend the facts in order to fit your view of reality.

  • ok so I understand that he left a note with a phrase on it that he would say if he ever were able to return. but here is my thing... what if he did return and was unable to speak? or what if he couldnt come back on his birthday? what if he could only come back on a monday and you only held the seance on friday evenings?!? Im just saying that 10 tries is a piss poor attempt to bring back the 3rd coolest person in history.... why only once a year? why so commercial?

  • He was amazing way ahead of his time.

To think at the time he was performing he did not have the technology to help.

A lot of performers base there acts on his to this day.

  • some say love is magic ......... but sometimes magic ......... is just an illusion

  • Really heavy accent. But you're right. People get all ticked when they find out that what Chris does isn't their definition of magic. Yes, they're illusions, but still if you're that good with illusions you're pretty damn good. Magic is an art and Harry knew that best. Chris is probably the only modern magician that even comes close.

  • Magic is an illusion.

    Illusions are magic.

  • That's cuz English was his second or third language. He spoke Hungarian, German and Hebrew, besides English.

  • Houdini was real. They really didnt have technology that we use now for magic. Now, Criss Angel? He is smoke, mirrors, actors, camera tricks..but he is damn good at what he does, dont get me wrong.

  • Dont underestimate Houdini plz.

He used all technology that was avaiable at his time to perfom, and He used smoke, mirrors and "camera" tricks. Indeed he even invented many of these tricks. He could made an Elephant vanish with it.

He always pointed out it was NOT supernatural what he did, and what did he use?

Tricks and technology, combined with a natural show talent and great Marketing skills.

As a stage artist, he HAD to.

  • hát igen, van kiért büszkéknek lennünk, mert vannak olyan elődök akik sokra vitték ebben a piszok nehéz világban is.

    Nyugodj Békében Houdini...(in Hungary)

  • Really?

  • Chris angel is a fake. They pay people to applaud his fake acts. He is nothing compared to The Great Harry Houdini. R.I.P

  • its all smoke and mirrors dude

  • im sorry but i cant understand the words he's saying...maybe bcoz of the bad recording on those days...i learn a lot of him thru criss angel, he was his idol, i've also seen the movie 'death defying acts' where he had a mistress before he died, i dunno if i shud believe that...that was a long long time ago when he died in 1926.

  • He actually did have a mistress. He was dating Jack London's ex wife.

  • For a few months in 1918, yes he did have an affair with Charmian London. Thanks for mentioning that, GrahamEldridge.

We know about that, of course, thanks to the brilliant research of Kenneth Silverman, IMHO Houdini's best biographer. I don't think even Kalush and Sloman touch him, although they had some new stuff to add the picture too, for sure.

  • For those who can't hear what he's saying in his 'stage voice':

"Ladies and Gentlemen, in introducing my original invention, the Water Torture Cell. Although there is nothing supernatural about it, I am willing to forfeit a sum of $1000 to anyone who can prove that it is possible to obtain air inside of the Torture Cell when I'm locked up in it, in the regulation manner, after it has been filled with water..."(Cont'd)...

  • (Cont'd): ..."Should anything go wrong when I'm locked up, one of my assistants walks through the curtain, ready to rush in, demolishing the glass, allowing the water to flow out in order to save my life. I Houdini, October the Twenty-Ninth, Nineteen-Hundred and Fourteen, Flatbush, New York."

Note that this is not how Houdini normally spoke. This is the slowed-down, carefully enunciated voice he used for the stage. We don't really know what he sounded like in regular conversation.

  • That can't be him.....he never aknowledged it as the water torture cell...he just said USD (upside down)....didn't he?

    (sorry if i mispelled anything)

  • I think the upside down was just something he referred to it as in private... it doesnt have as much marketing potential as water torture cell, and this clip is clearly meant to create buzz.

  • correct

that's somewehre said in this documentary search for:

Houdini - Unlocking the Mystery (1 of 10)

  • Wow...the man is a master of holding an audience's attention, even on this crude recording.

  • Yes, but he left Hungary at age 4, and spent the rest of his upbringing in Midwestern America. He's also not talking in his normal voice---this is his inflected stage voice, so that people at the back of a large theatre could hear every word he said. (This is before microphones).

Too bad this is all we have.

  • Yes it is Houdini. He did this on one of Edison's wax cylinders. He's going over his introductory speech for the Chinese Water Torture Cell, or the Upside Down as he used to call it. Then he reads a poem. This is nothing new, it's been known about since a famous physician died and the cylinders were found in his estate.

  • this is a cylinder recording

  • RIP Erich Weiss.

  • Capital C in Christ.R.I.P Houdini

  • Goodbye Houdini. :'(

  • My hero is harry houdini i also like criss angel but houdini never done camera cuts or cheat his audieance from a good show he did what he did but sadly he had to be let go. RIP

  • R.I.P worlds best magicain i hope god rests your soul in heaven i also hope your with your mom and wife to R.I.P Erich Weiss aka Harry "Handcuff" Houdini.

  • RIP Erich Weiss.

  • harry houdini is my god. i have things from harry houdini action figures to a tattoo. i dont believe in religion. i believe in harry houdini. hahahaha. oh christ i love him.

  • he is seriously my hero

i even had his picture on my myspace : )

  • dai vernon "the man who fooled houdini"

  • why do so many people who watch this hate criss angel? he isnt fake, hes just good at what he does, just like houdini

  • that did suck that one kid punched him that night before his show the kid asked houdini if he could punch him and see if it hurt him houdini mumbled somthing and the kid thought he said go ahead

  • Check out the vid of Kimbo Slice punching David Blaine in the gut. I know Houdini was Davids idol but that was ridiculous!
