  • "The South Essex ,Sharpe" *Sneeze* LOL I love Hogan's jokes.

  • and this is his friend, Agent Bond

  • I love the high quality acting and well written characters.

  • Captain Leroy Jenkins.

  • Hogan is a dreadful liar, but that is part of his appeal.

  • @Isildun9

I'm not certain he ever precisely lies to Sharpe...he just leaves all the important bits out.

Oh and is as accurate with his sarcasm as Sharpe is with his Baker rifle of course.

  • I love how Hogan says "Duty calls... Well c'mon jeremiah, lets go and have a wash"

    haha

  • Must have been a culture shock for an American loyalist to see, how a common soldier was treated in the British army. In USA at least there were no classes among the white men. Any bastard could become a rich man with influence.

  • @Lachausis Not at all. Like Major Leeroy says later in the film

    "Money talks, merit walks."

  • Hogan is truly a Magnificent Bastard

  • I love Sir Henry, Michael Cochrane is a very good actor.

  • Daniel Craig is nearly unrecognizable in this.

  • @BigEyesSmallMouth What part does he play?

  • @hardtackjack He plays Berry.

  • @BigEyesSmallMouth Thanks. Almost doesn't look like Craig with that big shock of hair lol.

  • That kid doesn't look old enough to be in a brothel ...

  • Hogan would make a great grandpa telling his grandchildren stories. / Sharpe doesn't get it that Hogan has just suckered him into throwing out his leg excuse. Sharpe starts bargining and Hogan's got him! He doesn't know how truely bad the South Sussex is. A killing officer indeed. No wonder Hogan is where he is to be able to fool two old troopers. :) Songs

  • @Songsmirth Oi .... you mean the South Essex. Sussex is totally hard and brilliant

  • The guy who plays Simmerson is a great actor. He makes you really hate his character.

  • i would like to see sharpe meet jack aubrey or hornblower. they would be either best friends or worst enemies.

  • Sharpe “What is it, Sir?”

Hogan “It’s a map of Spain…Oh, its upside down, makes no difference.”

    Classic!

  • I only just realised that was Daniel Craig... I just yelled: "Shit, that's Daniel fucking Craig". My mum just yelled at me back... whoops. xD

  • @SupermassiveMuse100 O_____O you're right!!!!!!! haha! this just got ten times more awesome!

  • @SupermassiveMuse100 who does daniel craig play in this show?

  • i cant wait untill that commander dies

  • @11Cheesewaffles Simmerson? Sorry to disappoint.. he's in Sharpe's Peril... lol. xD

  • Cox was superb in this. Great series.

  • What is with these assholes that need to debate shit that has absolutely nothing to do with the video like the world wars or the war of 1812 and all this bullshit? Piss off.

  • The only thing Sharpe's squad is missing is Baldrick.

  • Hogan was just the best. Its like in the first when Richard is commissioned by "Ol' Nosey", as Pat called him, right in the field, Hogan says to Wellesley ;...Sir, Sharpe will need a mentor..." & Wellesley says to Hogan ;"...Hogan you keep your hands off him!!.." Just the best.

  • "Is he alive, Hogan?"

    "Alive and kickin' sir"

    "Damn his impertinance!!"

    ROFLMAO

  • British discipline is very harsh and the men deserve a break for once without the fear of being lashed or demoted for a little reasons. In the French army, lashing was banned in the army, and the French soldiers were usually highly disciplined without the need for punishment. 75 lashes could kill a man.

  • @expertstrategy

All armies had harsh discipline, but also it depended on the general. If they were harsh then you could be killed etc (In any army for any country) but if the generals weren't harsh they would have been nicer to the men.

  • @mwillis1000, yes, however, in the British army, discipline was very harsh, but the Prussian army was worse, and their discipline was more severe.

  • @expertstrategy

Yep, in the French army also had some strict commanders who probably did the same. But discipline has always made our armies very good, we were the best soldiers and sailors in the world.

  • @expertstrategy

How bad was the Prussian discipline?

  • @mwillis1000, Prussian discipline was severe, but I cannot explain the depths on how harsh it really was. If you look back to the time of Frederick the Great, then you will know that he imposed very harsh discipline into his army, and small offensives can result with big consequences, such as being lashed a hundred times for a verbal insult.

  • @expertstrategy

Yes, very harsh indeed. But it probably made the other soldiers keep in line.

  • @mwillis1000, Frederick's way of imposing harsh discipline made his army the best of it's time. Discipline is good, but it is bad if you take it way over the top. Harsh discipline will make soldiers fear their leaders instead of developing respect for them.

  • @expertstrategy

Recpect is bettter than fear. fear can work though, it worked for Genghis Khan, Attila and Vlad the Impaler.

  • @mwillis1000 Vlad's methods of killing his enemies very slowly really scared the s*it out of the Turks. Even the Turkish leader was traumatized at the sight of a forest of men impaled on long stakes.

  • @expertstrategy

Accounts said that victims could survive for days, they tested it and if they used a thin enough stake, they would live for ages. They would die to dehydration, so if they were given water they would have lived longer! And when people betrayed him, he would invite them to a feast, it would be all very nice until he told them that the meat they were eating was their own children roasted. he was mentally screwed!

  • @mwillis1000, some people are completely out of their mind.

  • @expertstrategy

Yep, lucky i dont know any people like them! I dont see how people can do that, to animals let alone humans!

  • 42 seconds in: that was a horrible attempt at a Virginia accent.

  • Brian Cox and David Troughton made these early 2 films the best in my opinion, the characters later in the series dont hold a candle to the characters protrayed by those 2 actors

  • brian cox is friggin awesome and hellarious!

  • Ive just realised that Daniel Craig is in this, 0:35

  • 'the army has the scum of the earth in it, but look what fine fellows we have made of them' - wellington.

  • "This is his friend; Bond. James Bond."

  • "The South Essex, Sharpe"

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • Sean looks so damn young . . . cool people shouldnt age lol. Even if they dont act anymore there not aloud to die because their too cool lol

  • Mr Berry is a young Daniel Craig

  • hogan and pat a great double act...where would the english be without the irish hehehe

  • "If you're desperate to hold onto something hold a bottle!!!" Oh the laughs.......lollolol

  • He's so gloriously scheming that Hogan fella.

  • BOOBS!!!

  • @TheStandofTheLastGuy yeah probably-the polish lancers like remained the best cavalry even in wwii.

  • @TheStandofTheLastGuy yep definitely the best infantry and sailors of the world. some might say that the french cavalry were better and maybe theyre right, but lets not forget the great victories of british cavalry at salamanca, waterloo or india.

  • Why is it that in every sharpe book/program....he gets the hot girl :(

  • @ 2:55 ''sit down man. sit down.. u seem edgy, damned edgy... GOOD SHOW SIR HENRY!'' Sharpe jumps to his feet! lol

  • My God, but Hogan is rather adept at spewing shit from his mouth. you could plant him in the ground and grow another one

  • Great TV series.. they dont make these kinds of movies and shows anymore

  • 3 ppl dont have a imperial eagle

  • Hogan held this story together. Great acting.

  • why do i find 3:01 so funny...

  • Man, that auld fucker is a right bastard!

  • 'Hogan says he' lol i luv it when he say that =]

  • Daniel Craig is Gibbons? Oh man, talk about miscasting .

  • @rakkathon no he's Lt Berry

  • The book is better, but I was impressed with this series on the whole.

  • oh sorry it's upside down :P

  • Word. Hogan is the man.

  • simmins is a prick lol

  • spit it out, Major, what do you want?

now who said I wanted anything? xD

  • "ooo its upside down, but it doesn't make a difference!"

    LOL

  • conneck rangers thats what thay should have taken

  • Um. Where is part 1?

  • thx

  • 8:33 lol :)

  • thats daniel craig at 13 seconds

  • thats daniel craig at 13 seconds

  • they gon whoring sir, and i told them that if they needed to hold something hold a bottle

also i think Bishop=dick when sharp sez it

  • Is that commanding officer Charlie Drake.

  • I'd have taken the Rangers and the Devil take the essex

  • "where would the British be without the Irish?" Hogan is fucking awesome

  • LOL yeah, I really wish the Irish were still British I swear you make a great set of soldiers.

  • they sure wouldnt want to be british, ever agian

  • true enough mate true enough

  • @rifleman1122 The Irish are swine.

  • @MajBlood says the canuck.

  • @rifleman1122 Says the yank. Canadians are much more loyal to Britain than Ireland is.

  • @MajBlood since when is being loyal to that nanny state a good thing?

  • @rifleman1122 Since America demonstrated the results of independence.

  • @MajBlood true :)

  • @rifleman1122 What happens to Hogan? You don't seem to see him in the later episodes

  • @SNIFFMYBADGER the actor got sick I believe

  • @SNIFFMYBADGER Read the books.

  • @rifleman1122 I don't like your adjective but I do agree with opinion. He is a genius at the overall picture. Sad that a fellow clever Irishman is taken in by him. Never thought anyone could best Pat! P/H know Sharpe's weaknesses. Treasa and advancement. But P should have known that lies would be in the mix. Interesting that Hogan knows Pat so well. Hogan uses both men. Pat's loyality is the reason Sharpe gets advanced at all and it's all for love. P wants a nobody to advance for all of them.

  • gotta love perkins "i agree"

  • 7:44 LOL

  • i 'lold so hard

  • He doesn't believe if flogging a white man. nice

  • 'he is a brute beast in a red coat, he needs the lash!' they were the worst gutter bastards of england, and the best soldiers of the world

  • @ivaflimkien

they probably werent the best in the world. the british had a great navy but not the finest soldiers

  • @105km well youre wrong. no army in the napoleonic wars won such a string of victories as wellington's army won in the peninsular war. british infantry were the best in the world at the time. ok cavalry and artillery, id stake the french on that.

  • @105km Our infantry were aomething to behold. Yes, cavalry was a bit shit, but still the reason why we won so many battles was because of our fast re-loading time and our dirty fighting. Also we did invent the square formation to stop those pesky French Hussars. All countries had something unique in their military, The Americans had wank infantry, navy, marines, artillery, cavalry etc. But had the finest sharpshooters in the world because of the wilderness of the Americas.

  • @grobo11 American infantry may not have been that great but our navy was actually pretty good.Have you ever seen the U.S.S Constitution. Its twice as big as any British frigate and its cannons were larger and it was wicked fast. The english Navy only captured 1 actual american frigate during the war,And our sharpshooters were excellent.Just look at how many British officers were killed during the war most of whom served in Spain without a scratch.Ross,Packenham, Gibbs,Keen

  • @markmason1000 Your navy wasn't fantastic. Had we not been tied up with Napoleon in Europe it wouldn't have lasted. Also if you read my comment I say that the American sharp shooters were the best in the world. Also there hasn't been an English navy since the 1600's.

  • @grobo11

yeah the British navy definatly had far more ships then the Americans but we did do pretty well with what we had. 10 years before the war of 1812 we gave the Barbary pirates a real drubbing

  • @markmason1000 Yeah that's true. I was really impressed with the shores of Tripoli.

  • @markmason1000 um dude Napoleon made the square formation, also called the American Marines weak?Contenental Marines/U.S Marines have never lost a battle against the British. in fact the U.S Marines have never lost a battle, with the exception of Wake Island, then again most of them fought to the death or till wounded then again it was only like 150 of them against a Jap invasion force

  • @markmason1000

If I remember correctly, the Constitution and its sister ships were basically upgunned frigates but were purpose built so (The British had a similar stopgap version; they stripped the top deck of a 74 3rd rate and thus had a frigate that could outfight all other frigates.)

The US ships essentially overpowered the smaller 32 or 38 gun frigates of other countries. It was a very clever design but not some proof of US invincibility.

  • @wkcia from what ive heard of the British versions they were very unruly on open ocean The yankee frigate could run circles around them, dont forget to make a good navy you also need good sailors and daring brave officers which we had both of in great quantity

  • @markmason1000 not saying you didnt

  • 6:19; funny as hell.

  • Hogan's fantastic.

  • Daniel Craig! Looks well young here. One of his first television programmes!!

  • I love Hogan! ;)

  • The South Essex looks company-sized rather than a battalion or regiment.

  • hence what sharpe sez: "well,i'll need a crack company of first class trrops"

  • Your right but it's hardly possible for ITV to raise the funds for a whole battalion sized force every episode LOL

Besides this series was porduced some years ago before CGI came and made it a lot easier for epicc dramas.

I would love a remake of the series but Alas i dare say it might never be as good as the original.

  • Budget.

  • thats because in this one they only used a company not the whole regiment and it is that way throughout the series only company strength not regimental or batallion strenght...but for some reason they manage to get the french to batallion and regimental strength

  • Gibbons looks like a real tool.

  • Orgh, he pulled the Teresa card:-)

  • thats just evil

  • Hey Infofan and moviepal01, shut the fuck already. Just reading what you fuckheads are saying gives me the shit's. Now shut up and enjoy the movie already.

  • Sharpe limps one scene and is walking perfectly the next. Was there a time gap? Not with a bridge that needs exploding....

  • Haha "duty calls... c'mon Jeremiah let's go and have a wash"

Gotta love the backhanded insult from Hogan.

  • Thanks for uploading. Brian Cox is always a blessing to behold.

  • 7:37 Firing that Baker inside like that would have deafened everyone there. Those things are LOUD!

  • i love what a manipulative bastard hogan is

    lol

  • "I don't hold to flogging a white man" lol

  • What does 'flogging' mean?

  • It is a form of beating.

  • more precisely, lashing/beating repeatedly with a whip (usually leather and with more than one "tail", if i´m not mistaken). standard (and by no means rare!) punishment in the british army at the time.

  • whipping

  • Mr Berry is James Bond :D well Daniel Craig

  • good lord it is!

  • yeah, they considered bean for bond aswell. butr i suspect he didnt get the part cuz he plays a villain role better.

  • Harper is the best

  • Although having said that, what Infofan was saying about the taxation does have a lot of truth to it. There is a very good argument for the revolution was motivated largely by an elite looking for financial gain. I'm American and was educated in the US before I emmigrated, and the bs we are taught in school about the 'revolution' is just hilarious, all these ideas about it being a great patriotic fight for freedom against terrible oppression is just comic-book history of good-guys and bad-guys.

  • What I understand about most revolutions, RagdollPhysics, is that there are people that are doing well that seek to do better, and that means being in charge.

As well, sometimes a group of people's local interests are a high priority for them, but not for a far-away power, so independence is desirable and, eventually, necessary.

But, as in the case of Canada, Australia, etc., rebellion is not the only way to do it. I believe the USA's rebellion was not justified.

  • FACTS USE SOME.

  • I read about floging, and many things that England did here as well as India,Africa,Ireland,as well as well as West India! As you said we learned from our "King" . Once again you fail to grasp what I have said,so here it is again! We are not the Evil Empire you so much want to make us out to be,just as Canada isn't the land of the good guys. Your country has as bloddy a past as anyother. I don't care if you find our rebellion unjustified, that is your right, what I mind is the American bashing.

  • What I mind is "The world owes the US everything" attitude. The US backs whomever it can to make a profit.

I also have contempt for childish, self-justifying 'history'. I can't understand why you believe in it after the age of six or so. I know your books parrot the same old stuff; I've read enough of them.

Pointing to Britain's sins (or anyone else's) doesn't absolve your country of your own. Take some responsibility if you are a grown up people.

The US Revolution was an unjust tragedy.

  • Your opnion is your own and I'm glad you have one.We always take responsibilty for what we do, so if our history is useless after age six, that would mean your history stops being any good after 4 or 5? My contempt for you is that you can't see any good at all unless the union jack is attached to it! Really, who's twisting history to fit their view here? Well I have wasted more time on your sorry 3rd grade thoughts than I should have,so rant on and make yourself feel important, i'll talk to adults

  • heh,well one word good sir...ireland

  • isnt berry supposed to be fat ?

  • feck me i never noticed daniel craig before!!

  • notonestepbackwards I never said we don't have problems in our country, we have many. Helping others however isn't one of them. Sir Winston Churchill stated that without Americas help England would have fallen, so maybe you should take that up with him. (THE SECOND WORLD WAR

First published by Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston: 1948-53 (6vols)

    Woods A123)

As for the "Just watch the series" comment, I think not. It is my right to comment when I see fit and I will, just as you have the same right

  • The US took advantage of Britain's duress- such as demanding gold instead of good and services for payment, by demanding lease-free bases in the Caribbean for 99 years, selling inferior goods for good money, interfering in British policy towards India, etc.

If I burnt your business down, took your customers, and sent you a bill after helping rebuild what I had ruined, would that make me a hero?

I see US self-interest disguised as US heroism.

  • Infofan, my comment was not ment to say that England was not a great country, but was a direct response to your statements that America was only out for herself. At every turn when ever asked no matter the cost(i.e. lives, money,or time) we ALWAYS come to the aid of anyone who asks. As for your annexes comment I seem to recall England at one time or another "annexeing" India,Africa, the West Indies,America, and your beloved Canada. I think that makes that point clear.

  • Why does the US only get involved in areas of the world where there are markets for her junk, or resources to exploit? She has propped up dictators here and there because of her own interests.

Even after everyone admitted that the US invasion of Iraq was based upon a 'mistake' (and Bush became the ONLY scapegoat for a pack of cowards), the US stayed, and will never leave.

You call taking other people's wealth 'helping,' do you? My country has never fought for markets. That's why people love us.

  • Hogan's funny when he's talking ironicly... probably bad english

    grtz

  • Infofan what is your problem with the U.S.A. remember we did save Europe twice and we still are the ones EVERYONE runs to when they want help! Sure we have problems but we also have your problems to handle plus your hate at the fact. Quit asking for help if it makes you mad!

  • The USA has never 'saved' anybody. It annexes.

Rich elites in the US ( Cronies of Morgan, Carnegie, Ford, etc) made fortunes while Europeans died in the millions, and were in financial chaos.

WWI or WW2 were both opportunities for the US to control the wealth of the world by taking advantage of the duresses of other nations through shady deals.

The United States fights for MARKETS. Always has, always will. The US has never 'helped' my country or any other- save to help itself.

  • You didn't SAVE us :)

+ you can't say the USA doesn't has made his faultes with its army.

Just watch the series thank you.

    Grtz

  • And besides, when did the US ever help MY country? You've tried to steal our land since 1775; failing that, our wealth.

We joined WWI in July 1914- when the US was supplying both sides. We lost more men in the war than you did, with a population a tenth of your size.

We joined WWII in September 1940, and fought to the end in that one, too. We fought in every theatre in the war.

We also fought in Korea, and we are dying in Afghanistan with you. Why, I wonder, since the US takes all the credit?

  • once again read the comments, I NEVER said anything about Canada being bad. You seem ready to make the U.S.A. the worlds worst country. As for robber barons, EVERY country has them even Canada,so what? We love Vanderbilt,Rockerfella,Ford,Edison, and Gates,As for growing up,prehaps you should do some also. Are you so dumb as to believe that you don't fight for markets? I thought I was talking with someone with some brains, but to say that really shows how misimformed you are.

  • I/m weary of US self-righteous exceptionalism, and the constant demonizing of Britain, our common founder.

The US Revolution was a power grab by rich conspirators, aided by their cronies, and by recent enemies (France, Spain) for their own purposes.

So, you admit that the US fights for markets? What is all that crap about freedom, then? Or is it freedom to steal other's markets?

My country fights for freedom and justice, so I guess we'll never be too greedy, or obnoxious to the world...

  • Oh your Obnoxious to us all. Canada has done nothing but bend over everytime someone(read England!) comes near them. Canada was stolen from the French, or do you not want to talk about that? Outside of Hockey and SCTV what has Canada ever done on the world stage to help other than to follow England around and BEG for her scraps. Try getting from under her foot and make it on your own. I guess because we won't BEND OVER LIKE YOU, that makes you mad. Sorry we like to stand instead of bow down.

  • So Britain took Canada from the French. And?

Did I hurt your feelings? You know nothing about Canadians at all.

Go beg for worship elsewhere. Sadly, you are a typically lazy, obnoxious Yankee after all. Yet I defy you still.

Canadians developed Insulin, invented basketball, the zipper, the artificial arm, the electron microscope, etc.

Being free from Britain doesn't mean being hostile to it, you know.

We earned our independence in good faith. We aren't lying traitors, like you people.
