@Linaria what books are you using to study Icelandic? I've been working on it for a few weeks now, en ég er ekki góður í hún. Er Norska eins og íslenska? Ég tala ensku og Japönsku, svo íslenska er mjög... einstök (ég er frá Ameríku).
Takk Fyrir! (and your Icelandic is very good, I can tell!)
@AarinHikaKao Replying to an ancient comment, I know... but Faroese disney dubs would be the best thing ever. Just sayin'. xD The Icelandic version is just amazing though, for sure.
I love watching Disney movies in other languages with English subtitles! A lot of the dialog (song lyrics especially, since they need the rhyme and beat to match) change completely.
@AmoAmorem the difference between "fyrir" with the meaning of "for" and "handa" is almost none. for english translation you can translate both only to "for". But in Icelandic if you say "handa" it usually means that you are making something or there is a thing involved which you will probably end up giving. example: "I'm jogging for her" is clear. if you say the same thing in Icelandic but translate directly and use "handa" it would sound weird because there is no physical thing involved.
@AmoAmorem at the "Fyrir honum" part it is correct, in that case it is the dative case. It is the same with if it would be a man falling for a women "Fyrir henni" which would also put "her" in the dative case. In this particular sentence the word "fyrir" is not equal to the english meaning "for" but it has the meaning "in front" in it. So I could say "Hún er fyrir Honum" meaning "she is in front of him" (blocking him). "fallin fyrir honum" is "she has fallen off her feet in love with him". Sorta
@AmoAmorem Fyrir means for as in "i did something for you" handa is more like "this is gift is for you"--and what do you mean with "dative case"? hana=her, mig=me, honum(bent from the word hann)=him
As a language, Icelandic is orgasmic to ears, something utterly beautiful! <3 As a fellow Nordic I really like Icelandic's way of prounouncing things~
But in this certain song, think Meg's voice could be a slight bit darker and have more OOMPH in a way. Otherwise, European dubs are at the top of the list~ <33
@Maplespirit I'm actually watching Hercules in English for the first time right now, and when Meg started singing this song I felt it sounded too dark so I came here for the Icelandic version! Haha, I guess it's just how you hear things first.
I'm trying to hear what you guys all here: Icelandic being a beautiful language. Of course I know my language is stunningly beautiful, but I want to hear it and I'm trying to listen and hear it, but it's really hard when you understand the words, the language, grew up with this movie in this version and start singing along by reflex.
@Compootor i know right you can't hear the beauty in the language when you're from iceland just the same old same old and you just start to sing along :p haha
@Compootor For me, it's the brisk rolling r's, the soft Þ and Ð, the smooth vowels (love the diphthongs), and the voiceless sonorants (like 'hn'). It sounds like nothing else in Europe. The only other language in Europe that is as beautiful as Icelandic is Welsh, and I would LOVE to hear a Welsh version of this song.
@Warrosquyoake That does make sense. I Love Icelandic, and I understand what you're telling me when you write it down, but when you understand the words, it's a little difficult to hear all those qualities.
@Hundparkenskatthund Now your mistaking... Icelandic was and allways will be the oldest scandinavian language... because Iceland was so isolatede from other countrys we upheld our language... Norway, sweeden and Denmark spoke iceland ( the old language)... but because there are so many countrys around them they lost it... Learned that in history class and may I point out, that I live in Denmark and if you look at old danish writing... you will see It looks verry much like Icelandic...
Well some language scientist claims that Älvdalska ( a language spoken in a small part in Sweden called Älvdalen) is even more close to the vikings language
@gingermoll101 no, the translation is actually really good. If you don't know Icelandic and are maybe looking the words up in a dictionary... than the lyrics won't make sense... But when you put all those words together, they mean the same thing that the english lyrics say.

ja, det koräk. Bra gissat :) The word "knípur", is the verb form of the noun equivalent "knípa". knípa meaning a problem or sticky situation and etc. and as for the rest, it was spot on. :)
@aGeilini We have the word "knipa" as well, but we don't use it in this way...The context like you is probably the same in the end, but we can't use it like "knípur hjá mær"
In this case, we would probably say something like "Vi är i knipa när det kommer till uttalet" if we had to use that word
@aGeilini And yeah, danish pronounciation is tricky...It's as if they have porridge in their throats, and it's more like they cut half the words out when they pronounce them

I love this language. It's so much more beautiful than english. (Or french which is what all my friends think is the best language.)
I'd love to type it but I have no idea how on an american keyboard.

I also remember watching this a long time ago... this is really fun to listen to, and her voice is gorgeous as well. Icelandic is amazing.
