Great list man. Have played many of these, but I can see I missed out on quite a few - Grandia, Suikoden II, Star Ocean, FFVIII and Legend of Dragoon mainly. All of the otherse I've played and loved to death. Secret of Mana is probably my favorite out of all of them, close with Lufia 2 - mainly because those have the strongest memories for me =)
For me an RPG is when you can personnalise your characters. You can level up, buy items, equip gear, choose skills (skill trees), choose class, etc.
Zelda looks more like an action-adventure than an RPG since you don't even decide what skills you get or what items you're gonna use (well you can but it's very weak).
Thanks for putting The Legend of Dragoon. Additions were something brilliant, even though I think the fighting mecanics were flawed in some aspects

Ugh FF8... There are several final fantasy that are worse I guess. I want them to go back to good games. When I play a game I don't want to set it up to play itself.
definately FFVII, the game had such a good story that you ended up really hating Sepiroth, also it had a fantastic sense of travel and adventure (before you got the airship). Lots of fun mini games in the gold saucer, each carachter had their own detailed back story (Red XIII my favourite) and the overall sence of achievement when killing ruby or emerald weapon was immense!! Best ever and screaming out to be remade!!!

I find Final Fantasy VII to be so overrated just my personal opinion I actually liked IX a whole lot more then VII which in turn was much better then VIII which in my opinion the worst non sequel/spinoff Final Fantasy game.

I can honestly say its had huge impact with me and its up to this day, my favourite Final fantasy. I admit i never did play FFVI to my shame, and people say its the best so my opinion should be regarded with that fact in consideration. I don't really like the design of FFIX characters even though I recognise its a great game.
zelda is not an rpg. If it was set in a modern setting nobody would even consider it one. If zelda is an RPG so is DK64 because you start out with only 2 health melons and then get up to 4. You also get various musical instruments and other abilities as you collect more money.

There is a problem, here, however. Specifically speaking, Nintendo's own website. Paper Mario? RPG. Tales of Symphonia? RPG. Ocarina of Time? ...Adventure. A Link to the Past? ....Adventure. They don't categorize any of the Zeldas as RPG's.
I think they're mistaken on Zelda II at least, as that, as far as I am concerned, is an Action-RPG. But basically, the one element separating the other Zelda from the Mana's and Crystalis' of the world is an experience/level-up system.

@Guapadude How is it not? Really the only thing distinguishing it from most rpgs is the lack of levels. Other than that they are very similar. You gain more life, new abilities, new and more powerful weapons etc. All hallmarks of an rpg.
@Eclipton You don't need to gain experience or Level up for a game to be classified as an rpg, Zelda is as much an RPG as the other games but with different mechanics, instead of gaining levels and experience you gain Hearth Containers Magic upgrades for your weapon and new more powerful items as you go on, I mean okay has become a Genre itself over the time is what you could say but you can easily classify it as an RPG as well.
That would make any game wherein your upgrade your character's health and inventory an RPG. By that definition, Metroid is an RPG series. Same goes for Resident Evil. You run into problems when you try to expand the parameters of the genre too widely. At some point, you have to stop and say, "It's no longer an RPG." It's another genre with RPG elements at best.
Good list but I disagree on a few things, putting ff8 above chrono trigger is fail. You also forgot super mario rpg completely, that's one of the best rpgs ever.

final fantasy 8 has to be the best rpg i have ever played console wise and tbh i know its not everybodys cupa tea but stil :( it just has so many twists lol. @idoitproduckshuns Those are 3 aspects which also have other games, which arent used to be a RPG. For me specially is important a skill-system (skill-tree) and more then one playable (or also non-playble computer played) character. Still Zelda imho is an Action-Adventure.

They have not remade FF7 atal and its doubtful if they ever will. The time and money needed in their opinion would outweigh any profit and would take time away from their other releases.
You can only download FF7 on PS3.

final fantasy 8 has to be the best rpg i have ever played console wise and tbh i know its not everybodys cupa tea but stil :( it just has so many twists lol. As for the rest of the games i have completed or either played except suikuden i think most or all of them deserve number 1 because most have drained 100+ hours of my life away lol :)) just 1 more thing no Tales Of Phantasia :(

@anjireina Storywise, FFVII was terrible. An incoherent mess. Consider these:
1. Sephiroth has no motive to kill Aerith, last Cetra, when his intent is to return planet to the Cetra.
2. Tifa never corrects Cloud's flashback story even though she was actually there and knows its bullshit.
3. There is no way on earth Aerith could have evaded the turks for 15 years when they know where she lives.
I'm an English major, and these are mistakes only a truly bad writer could make. Absolutely putrid.

nice vid but i have a number one to top your's....final fantasy vii..modded...seriously the only game that beats ff7 is ff7 modded so that the world map/town character models are replaced by the ones you see in battles and cloud, both world/town and battle is replaced by the "high definition" cloud seen at the end of the game ;)

those games were epic and the best of all times, "next gen" console games specially rpg just sucks, they are better only in graphics & sound, but in story and gameplay the old ones rocks. a proof of that is final fantasy, since is square-enix (pussy main characters) FF sagas are getting worse and worse, square FF's were the best and so the 90's rpg games and some of ps2.

One thing is for sure, this game is no RPG (check that out in Wikipedia) it is and stays an Adventure... specially an Action-Adventure. So even if this game is awsome and also one of the best games I´ve ever played, therer is no space for this game in a RPG-Best of List.

@idoitproduckshuns Those are 3 aspects which also have other games, which arent used to be a RPG. For me specially is important a skill-system (skill-tree) and more then one playable (or also non-playble computer played) character. Still Zelda imho is an Action-Adventure.

ok, i havent played that many rpgs, but heres my top 10:
1. Pokemon-in general, all are pretty good although i like hgss the most
2.Kotor
3.Kotor 2
4.Zelda, orcarina of time
5.Fallout 3
I haven't played games like final fantacy and mass effect so I can't comment and as for zelda a link to the past, when i was younger i only really played four swords and was naive enough not to play a link to the past much due to it's worse graphics so I can't comment on that either.

huh. I'm surpised FFX isn't on here. I liked ff7 and ff8 alot too, but 9 and 10 were are aslo among my faves. (personally, I think ffx is the best they've ever done, but I haven't played 13 yet...)
