I think the colors come from the salts that are inside the bulb, the salts vaporize and form the color (explains warm up) HIDs are a huge benefit to the driver for added visibility however when you simply swap out the halogen bulbs for HIDs you will always get glare and make yourself look like a fool and anger other drivers (unless you had halogen projectors or something) Whoever said 20 bucks for quality bulbs is a joke. Quality is hit and miss when you go that cheap (i have had experience)
autocrossalcoholic is wrong the lower the K number the better you will see.The higher the K the more blue and purple it will look but you would actually see less.Lower numbers give you a more yellow type light which is way better to see with but it does not look as cool.
actually, ANY color coating will decrease lumens. the most lumens are 4100-4300kelvin for most HID capsules. if you have ridiculous rebased hid bulbs in those headlights, i'm pretty sure they're less lumens than a 4300 k setup.
i don't have HIDs because i don't need them, and if you can find me a yellow HID bulb that doesn't use a coating let me know. there would have to be a ridiculously high sodium content in these bulbs for them to be yellow-cast from crystals and not from a coating. reputable companies do not manufacture yellow hid.
hocuz, no. you must be an idiot. the temperatures you're talking about are a measurement of the color, it's a temperature on the Kelvin scale. the colors are a result of the gas mixture in the bulbs, or a coating on the glass. usually it's the gas mixture. they don't operate at those heat temperatures at all, and if you thought that you are a moron.
any color higher or lower than 4700k is not white and is harder to see by. these numbers are color measurements, not thermal temperatures!!!
@autocrossaholic But yellow light is the hardest to reflect off water molecules suspended in the air, that's why Euro auto manufacturers have been using yellow fog lights for years. So it may not be as "bright", but yellow headlights will provide far superior vision down range, when compared to white light. The bluer you go, the worse the reflection off the water in the air gets. Then if you choose to go with a red or pink, the red side of the spectrum doesn't reflect enough to light the road.
@gunitzpqm ive seen HID conversions for $200+. are you expressing that $30 is too much to pay for bulbs? sylvania silverstar halogen bulbs already sit at $40+. i paid about $60 for my 8000K HIDs
@MrKdub318 You can get a pair of quality bulbs for around $15-$20 shipped in colors from 3000k to 12000k. and silverstars do not compare to HIDs. $60 is an OKAY price for bulbs and ballasts but not for bulbs alone. and $200 for WHAT exactly?? that's way too much money unless it came with a whole projector assembly
@gunitzpqm its not a bad price at all. i did hours of research and price comparison before i bought my HIDs. but then again, different companies and different qualities of products would change the price obviously, but i would NEVER pay $200+ for HIDs. and it was just for the bulbs and ballasts. but i think the $60 i paid was a reasonable price without getting something super cheap versus something that will make me go broke.

On HID's there is no color coating, they do something to the xenon gas inside the bulb.
If your HID's have a color coating, they're crappy $30 chinese bulbs, or halogen.

The color comes from the temperature the bulbs operate at. Low temps (3000) are yellow, high temps (10000) are blue.

@Chetnik313 So, as for "driving purpose" yellow HID's would be your only choice. For look, do whatever makes your little heart tickle,

@Mitchd03 Crappy $30 bulbs? For $30 those bulbs better install themselves and a new wiring harness for your HID kit with rosin-based solder!
