Ok, I know all the tunes here starting with a bit from Slaughter on 10th Avenue, then Lover, If I Loved You, There's a Small Hotel, It's A Grand Night For Singing, Thou Swell, and then another little bit of If I Loved You...but what is the intro to the medley?? Can't seem to place it!
The beginning is the actual intro to Slaughter on 10th Avenue. That theme is featured prominently later in the ballet, performed on high strings. You can see a preview of the piano sheet music at Sheet Music Plus.
George Cates=Edward Hopper with a goatee! Stunning resemblance. Did he arrange, or just conduct? I ask, 'cause he conducted a chart of Rhapsody in Blue around 1980 that had the most execrable chord substitution at the climax, for which I will never forgive the perpetrator. Fun stuff this, glad it's available!
@kurtarmbruster I thought he arranged, but now my memory is plucking the oft-said phrase "Here's George Cates conducting another fine Bob Ballard arrangement," so I'm less certain...
GREAT sound, esp. the strings! Who does the violin solo on "If I Loved You"? Love the shuffle-rhythm "Thou Swell" with Norman Bailey's Busse-style trumpet!!
Anyone know who the solo trumpet player is at 3:51?

@don3comp Trumpet is long-time Welk sideman Norman Bailey, who had earlier played for several years with the Freddy Martin orch.

Jimmie Getzoff is the violinist. He was on from 1960-62 between Dick Kesner and Joe Livoti.

Someone should have given George Cates a baton suppository. He was a talented guy, but kind of an asshole.
