  • Now you people that weren't around in the 60's can see where that goofy woman in those Progressive Insurance commercials gets her hair style from. (I think it's Progressive Ins.)...but I'll trust you'll know who I'm talking about.

  • This was the first in a long list of hit singles recorded in Armin Steiner's homegrown garage studio on Formosa Street, Los Angeles.

  • I love this song........Dee Dee is an old and dear friend.

  • @OgPsQd Where does she live, and how is her health, etc? What's she up to?

  • I recommend visiting Dick and Dee Dee's official website for video clips unavailable on YouTube, like them singing "Heartbeats" from the film "Wild Wild Winter" backed by the Astronauts. Or a clip of them singing the Castaways' "Liar Liar" with Billy Preston on keyboards.

  • 1ST VERSE: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yea-hea, yea-hea, yea-hea yea-hea The mountain's high and the valley's so deep Can't get across to the other si-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hi-hide Don't ya give up baby, don't you cry Don't ya give up till I reach the other si-hi-hi-hi-hi-hide I was lonely baby, I couldn't sleep The night they took you from my si-hi-hi-hi-hide I was a lonely soul Until you became my goal And then I saw the spark of love And then the stars fell from up above OH YEAH!
  • Since the sound of the song requires four harmonic vocal tracks, this is obviously pre-recorded. But they do such a swell job!

  • They recorded using four voice tracks. Each sang two separate harmony lines. St. John sang the highest and lowest parts including the falsetto, and Dee Dee sang the middle notes. Without telling them, the record producers changed Mary's name to Dee Dee, something they did not discover until after the record was released.

  • The group was originally founded by California classmates Mary Sperling and Richard Gosting. They eventually changed their names to Dee Dee Sperling (currently Dee Dee Phelps) and Dick St. John. Toured in 49 states with Beach Boys, Stones, lots of others. Disbanded in 1969. In the 80's Dick St. John toured with his wife, Sandy. He died Dec. 27, 2003 when he fell off the roof of his house. In 2007, Dee Dee Phelps began touring as Dick & DeeDee with actor/singer Michael Dunn.

  • Good video, but is there any that you can hear more of DeeDee's voice? Thanks.

  • @HPVISTAUSER She sings the middle notes, so she's always hard to hear, but her harmony is indispensible.

  • looks like they're lip-sinking? sounds like the record

  • @7c8f It is.

  • This was summer of 1961 in my '58 Olds in Ault Park Sally & Snow with Sheila....other goodies...Raindrops....Dee Clark, Smokey Places Corsairs...GOOD summer...thanks for song

  • I'd say this is from 1966 or 67. The show started in 1966.

  • This brings back so many good memories...They are so very gifted; Thank You Dick ( 2003) & Dee Dee.

  • I love this song always reminds me of my 60 impala in high school

  • I always loved this. His "falsetto" is amazing!

She still looks hot to this day.

  • with the echo and the vocal resonance in her voice is "haunting"

  • nice job on the lip sync till the very end.it was just a bunch on unsure producers in the 50-60's.some groups could pull off a real version.i bet D&D could have.

  • Ohhhhhhh, thank you!!!!!!!!!! : ) ♪♪♪♥♪♪♪

  • This blows me away. Thank you!!

  • What a jerk he was, not acknowledging her presence (let alone her contribution--her voice is the memorable one).

  • she is fine

  • ONLY COMMENT--!--- FANTASTIC

  • This is Great to see this Footage.

  • lip syncking?

  • Only Having "American Bandstand", Few Of Us Saw Any Performers. I Always Wondered Who Did the High Notes, and or Falseto.

    Now I Know.............Thanks, I Love this Music!!

  • Such a simple, beating melody,...over and over again.....it stays with one all day doesn't it?? How wonderful that we have YouTube and these great clips.

I loved it in 1961 when it hit the charts and I still love it, and I am in my 70s!!!

Long live the 50s and 60s!!!

  • dang. This is truly one of quirkiest records of all time. cRaZy, man!

  • I grew up in Baltimore during the '50s and '60s, and don't recall a local teen show called "The Scene". We did have one called the "Buddy Deane" show hosted by Buddy. It aired mid afternoon during the week and there was also a Saturday afternoon airing from what I remember.

Really enjoy hearing these songs sung again from that era of my life. It's like turning back the clock to a simpler time...

  • @shortliner68 Now I know, it was broadcasted in Oklahoma (WKY-TV - now KFOR.), hoasted by Ronnie Kaye.

  • What 60s music variety show is this from?

  • @nmulae It's from a local show called "The Scene". I don't remember which town it was broadcasted from though. Maybe Baltimore.

  • Man-o-man if this clip were live!

  • Dee Dee's such a babe!

  • @ralphsrec yeah but thats an ugly ass dress..looks like a fruit sack ..horrible

  • @blkshepherd

yeah, you're right, don't know what she was thinking there...

  • @blkshepherd Hmmm, in those days, it would have been considered dressy and stylish. Styles of today are sleazy. Funny, no one mentioned how sloppy he looks with that untucked shirt, which would have earned him a trip to the principals office in school, and a reprimand plus no promotion if he came to work looking like that. Look at the snappy matched and coordinated attire of that period. Only he is out of step, the others dressed with respect for public appearances. Then along came the hippies.

  • In 22 and this has been my favorite sing since I was 15!! I sing it all the time!!

  • Just by chance, I saw a record collection being offered on TV, & i heard this song, which I probably have not heard in 30 or 40 years??! I wonder how many other folks like me, have songs in the back of our head from our youth, that we forget about, only to one day hear them piped in at a store, or other type situation, then we go nuts trying to remember who they were, so we can hear that song one more time...

  • I always wondered if they became romantic. I would love to know. There has never been two better singers, ever.

  • @Sugaree1956

    They were friends only.

  • @birdsongfarm1 Thank you very much. I used to see Dick and DeeDee doing the song Turn Around with Dick Clark as the Host and poof it disappeared, I would love to see it again, any ideas where I could find it? TY

  • @Sugaree1956 I think you will find it, along with lots of other Dick and DeeDee songs on DeeDee's web site.

If you can, buy her book. It's a fantastic read.

I was lucky enough to win a contest where I spent a week with them in Hollywood. A trip I will never forget.

Google Dick and DeeDee and you will find her web site. I think you will find it a wonderful trip down memory lane.

  • @Sugaree1956 Wow a week with them, what a neat thing. And thank you I will sure do that. God Bless.

  • Always like the song and Dee Dee is such a babe. Elegant and so cool. The y look like they liked each other.

  • Magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bought this single when i was 9 wish it was on itunes

  • bought this single when i was 9

  • wow thnx for the memories.... simpler times,,,, ahh if i knew then ::)) happy 2011

  • This video looks like it's off of a teen dance show from Oklahoma City called the Scene, which was popular in the late 60's and early 70's.

  • Don't know where you found it, but THANKS!

  • Absolutely fantastic & you're right, I've never seen them perform this before.

  • I agree. Wow! Thanks.
